Logged this - Fuel pressure is well off. Could the Fuel filter cause this or is it definitely the pump?

Yep when the internals were put in.

Sorry Ed didn't see your post.

Will order a cam follower today - is the sensor just called Fuel Pressure sensor? Part num?

Thanks

John

DIY job or garage only?

DIY job or garage only?

It's easily a DIY job with the correct size spanner.
I suggest first you relieve the pressure in the fuel rail by bleeding it using the Schrader bleed valve on the hpfp.

Awesome thanks....will try this first. Then if no improvement tackle the nightmare of taking the fuel pump off (banjo fitting) and checking the cam follower.

You should be aware that the sensor is around £48 from the dealers so IMO you should look at the cam follower and cam first to minimise unnecessary spending.

Sorry for the questions....but what does checking the cam entail? Cam follower I'm fine with though the cam?? not so sure.

Just run your fingernail on the cam lobe surface after you remove the follower.
If the follower is in good condition it should be smooth. If the follower is very worn down but not punched through then it's worth checking the cam for smoothness as a heavy scratched lobe can cause increased wear on the cam follower.

Ok great. will do that this weekend.

Well found the problem.....

Took the fuel pump off and first thing i noticed was fuel to the right and under the pump slightly.

The cam follower is fine, worn slightly but fine (will replace)

The worst thing was the o ring on the pump...perished and half missing. So must be fuel leak from the join to the engine.

So now need an O ring today - not likely from TPS or dealer due to time.

Any angels out there with an O ring for the fuel pump??? Cam follower would also be amazing - otherwise it's left till Monday afternoon.

I have an O ring lying about somewhere but may be pointless if you're not close to Manchester.

The vw dealer may be open on Sunday but the parts department is usually shut

Hi John, loosing the hpfp seal can be.... If not fully addressed a serious problem! There will not only be the issue with power and the EML light you are experiencing but also the potential consequential damage caused by the fuel seal failing and leaking fuel into the cylinder head! This maybe a given and I apologise if you are already aware of this but you must make sure you change you're oil and filter after an issue such as this as the oil will be thinned out by the fuel which will be less effective as a lubricant and depending on the degree of fuel contamination become way more combustible than it would otherwise be, risking unnecessary wear and at worst severe engine damage!  :driver:

Right logs attached.....on the way home couldn't accelerate over 3k rpm, found air filter hose not connected to grill and pointing down....reconnected. Went out after dinner and pulling like a train again....Doesn't look fuel related....

This is a nightmare...all fine last night though today on the way home same thing happens. But logged it this time...Fuel Pressure has differences of over 30 sometimes and boosting is none existent.

Log is here: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B9iyWw-ZADAfQkN3ekxnWno5b3c

Any experts give me an opinion before it goes into a garage.....new pump, sensor??

Any chance you could log block 103 for the low pressure pump?

If that's ok, I'm wondering if you have an A version cam that has worn down in spite of the follower being ok.

Cam felt smooth when i replaced the follower.....Will try and log 103, will be tomorrow now though

Thing that gets me is that it's fine then like the last log - intermittent. If the cam was worn would it not be all the time?

A worn down A revision cam should feel smooth but the lobe height would be reduced leading to the discrepency between requested and actual rail pressure.

Logs redone and this time with block 103.

Car was fine this time. No major power loss.

nightmare when it's intermittent

Well bought new thrust sensor and was fitting it when I noticed the bajlnjo joint was wet. Looks like I did tighten properly when I changed the cam follower. Slightly embarrassed. Just hope that was the issue.

Don't overtighten it!

If it's still leaking after tightening then I suggest you replace both the brass hpfp fitting and bolt.

Seemed ok, car was very responsive though EML came back on. Haven't checked code yet. Will do in a bit.

Seriously considering selling up and getting an ST. Nothing but issues.
