looking at a private car but only has one key
guy said brought from VW i think, so would a dealer sale with only one key?
-
is it a UK car ?, think a key programmed will be over £100 , you could get one on ebay cheaper but will need cutting and programming
-
yes a uk car
-
A dealer would only sell a second hand one with 1 key, new it would have two, is this the same car that comes up odd on the HPI ?
-
yeah it is
everything seems fine, v5c, car etc.
the odd HPI i'm going to ring up finance company and ask, but having asked on a couple of forums, think it probably relates to previous private plate on the car.
as for key, bit annoying really.

yeh its a bit sloppy of him RE the key, if i bought the car from the dealer you would make them throw one in as part of the deal, he has possibly lost it, i would just be a tad carefull if you do buy it and if you can get the missing key removed from the ECU's memory
-
thanks
i've just emailed the seller to see if he recieved only one key from the VW dealer
i brought a newish toyota from an independant before and only had one remote key.
the spare key was expensive £100+
i can only assume VW is more expensive
but when they did the new one, they reprogrammed both so the car won't start with old key as the immobiliser ecu had been reset, but good point
-
The key is about £110 + £45 to get programmed in, be aware though that if the locks have ever been changed ( the key is ordered from Germany with your vin number) the key supplied will only fit the original locks! and You'll have wasted £150. They do warn you before ordering them.
-
someone else quoted near £180
so close to £110+45+VAT ;-(
-
I bought mine second hand from a dealer with only one key on the promise that they sorted out with another one. Which they did. The transmitter part of the key and the re-coding was £70 inc VAT.
-
VW dealer or dealer should never sell you a car with 1 key.
EVER. :sad1:

If you do still buy the car, get the key reprogrammed as a priority.
When I bought mine, the seller (a private dealership for luxury cars), had just been broken into, and his safe with all his spare keys had been stolen.
The seller wasnt too bothered as all his cars are kept in barns etc, and viewing is by appointment only. So when a car is to be viewed he brings it to the office - otherwise they are kept offsite.
Anyway, I still purchased the car since he had promised me a new key was on the way and was paid for via his insurance.
I took the car as intended, since it would be kept in a locked garage when not in use.
The key took a while to arrive, since it came directly from Germany as the car was only a few months old.
As soon as i got the second key, I took it in to VW, and had both keys reprogarmmed - again the seller picked up the bill as it went through his insurance.
Hence Im unsure as to how much the key was, or how much it was to reprogram them, as the seller got the invoices directly to himself. But dont be put off not buying the car. Try to knock the seller down on price due to the missing second key, or get him to order you one, and see proof of the order before you do the deal.
Either way, get down to VW and get the key/s reprogrammed.

Hi mate
from my experiance of working in a main dealer they have to sell the car with a spare key. If anything they should do it asa gesture of goodwill. They would have if anything have deducted the price of the spare key from the part ex price of the car when the last owner part exchanged it thats what we do anyway as the cost of keys these days are so expensive.

anyone got any views to Auto Locksmiths ?

which VW dealer was this?
also what did you do for key and key cutting?
-
Dealers will sell 1 key cars if they can get away with it.
I know lots people who got cars from dealers with 1 key, even my GTI had 1 key, but I always demand a new replacement at the point of sale and I've always get one.
If they want to sell you the car, they'll get a key for it.

Gilder VW Sheffield. They sent me the ignition part of the key Special Delivery, then I took it to Harrogate VW for the remote and to have it coded. They refunded me the cost of the latter (promptly I must add).
