Title: RNS 510 Antenna Issues

Morning guys & gals.

Been having a few issues with my RNS picking up my current location on the nav recently. Sometimes it's taking almost an hour of driving before it homes in on exactly where I am, I turn the engine off at a services for 20 mins, come back out and it's lost it's signal again for another hour or so.

The RNS was retrofitted so i've checked on the antenna etc, installed in the passengers side of the dash and pointing the right way etc. So considering finding an alternative (shark fin) aerial to do the radio & GPS. Stumbled across this on ebay last night and would like to get people's opinions etc.

Apparently it does GSM/GPS/AM&FM.

Now I know it is a cheap china import. But isn't everything from china these days : :signLOL:

I'm unsure what else to do, i've done some research and found that the OEM RNS510 units installed in GTI's had the GPS fin antenna on the roof and an FM/AM aerial in the rear window? Could anyone provide any information or guidance on this, possibly pictures would be cool too.

I'm totally fed after paying money for a sat nav that isn't as instant as the tom tom when turning it on. Which now i'm having to carry both if the RNS doesn't want to play ball.

Any help much appreciated!

Is it an original gps antenna? And also what version maps are you running.

Someone recently had same issue and I updateD his maps and it fixed it.

Hi mate,

Thanks for the speedy response. Yes the antenna is the original VW one.

I'm unsure on the map pack at the moment as I dont have the car with me (will check when i get home), it was installed less than 12 months ago and was told it was the most upto date map pack, it's got the turn off display button & clock on show when the unit is turned off, if thats any help with the firmware installed, how do I find out what map pack is installed?

Hi

If you hold down setup for about 10 seconds it should show some options. FM ,AM and I can't remember the last one. Version info or something. In there it should say what maps you currently have. If it says 7692 then that's the latest set of maps.

Try it out and see what version.

Let us know if you can't find it.
