told my uncle got a DMC-TZ30 after he said he wanted something to make his picture taking skills look good, cant explain how awesome the pictures are, and he is awful at taking pictures! Well within budget too.

here is a review and its rivals:

with you on these, my old man has a G10 and its a cracking bit of kit given the metering system is more akin to the EOS  :happy2:

Very good choices, I have tried both. Also, take a look at the canon powershot SX1 IS: It is a compact superzoom (the zoom is NUTS) with movable screen, lightweight, smaller in weight and size than a dslr and has great feature...such as miniture mode (makes it look like your shooting with a very expensive tilt shift etc.) Full HD video as well.

I just bought one used for my gf to get her into photography for 200 quid in perfect condition from London Camera Exchange. We took to on a recent trip to Canada, in which we took it everywhere, and even to the EuroKracy euro show in Montreal and it was awesome. Found myself using it LOADS, I love it. Has a good auto mode, and m mode which is very easy to use.

I hardly used my DSLR which is surprising (aside from the shoot I did at the show itself), as I found myself constantly shooting with it instead due to its ease of use and small size. Originally I bought my gf a Canon 400d dslr, and she just couldn't understand it, and would get frustrated that the quality of pics were not even close to my Nikon d300....bless her.

My hopes of her getting into shooting was almost ruined, until I she got this. She absolutely loves it...and as a photographer, I can admit I do as well.

I will post some pictures I took with it this week, you will be surprised!

Hope that helps, Neil.

I third that, Canon G12 is a fantastic all-rounder, relatively light weight too. A no brainer to just pick up, full auto and snap away, yet get into the settings and it performs as good as an SLR.

I've also been following this thread with interest as I'm off to Dallas on a family holiday for 3 weeks soon, and want a decent camera to go with me. We've currently got a £200ish Sony cybershot camera, which is fine for quick pictures, but I'm wanting something that delivers a better quality photo. My budget is similar - about £500ish and had been looking at the Sony NEX5 and possibly a Olympus PEN.

For a noob like me there is a heap to take in! I think my main decision is whether to go for a Compact Systems Camera or an entry level DSLR?!

It doesn't perform as well as a DSLR.... They are good, but no where near as good as a 7D or 5dii for example.

The don't have the sensor acreage like a DSLR. G12 is small sensor, G1-X is bigger but still way short of even a crop sensor DSLR.

^^ Not only that but the way in which they can be operated. Yes, the G series do have manual controls, but they are slow and a bit of a pig to use compared to a DSLR... also focusing speed, Image resolution... etc... etc.... etc.......

I've been looking for a new camera for a little while too. Was leaning towards a Nikon D3100 but wasn't sure because of its size whether it would be practical for taking on holiday etc.

A deal came up today on the Panasonic Lumix GF2 so I've taken the plunge and bought it. Only £199.97 at Dixons for the camera with the 14mm lens (Same camera +lens is over £400 on Amazon).

Should be ideal for casual use I think

The Sony DSC HX20V seems to be the one i'll be geting soon  , trouble is there will be a better one out as soon as i buy it . Quite like the idea of the Canon S95 or 100 but the zoom loses it for the Canon but the sensor does it for the Canon !! I hate tech decisions ! Any other input . Are there filters for all compact Cameras or only some ?

So pissed off with Dixons over this. They sent me the wrong camera through. I returned it by courier on Monday and I've just had an email from them saying oh sorry the camera you actually ordered is out of stock now.

HULK SMASH PUNY DIXONS.

Mate, got mine from here http://www.parkcameras.com/18363/Panasonic-DMC-GF2-Black---14-42mm-Lens---serviced.html

Although its not brand new, I can't tell! came in original box with all leads, battery/charger, cd's and lens is 14mm-42mm lens which according to reviews is better than standard 14mm! Bought mine with 4gb SDHC and arrived in a day!

More than happy :happy2:

Thanks Ian but that link doesn't seem to work. I don't think they have it in stock anymore.

Your link was to the one that Dixons sent me by mistake - the one with the 14-42 mm lens. It was the 14mm pancake lens version I had ordered :(
