Title: Looking for a Mk2 GTi
Post by: dave parker on July 05, 2012, 11:38:48 am
I am starting to look for a Mk2 GTi but want a minter, low mileage, minimum owners etc ,  rather than just a reasonable one.

I have the money for the right car but dont have any idea where to look other than on here, Autotrader and Ebay - the last two not being ideal place to locate one

Any ideas?

I will be buying a mk2 16v in the new year, as a toy. I had one back in 1991, and it was a fatastic car, mine was a D plate with 1/4 lights, but I will be after a big bumper 3 or 5 door model in oak green.
Have fun trying to find the right car

Thanks Oli, I have a feeling its going to be a looooong road, but want to make sure I get the right car.

Need to sell my mk5 first, then get cheap reliable runaround to use till the "right" golf turns up

Things have changed a lot recently. There used to be hundreds of Mk2s on Autotrader. Youd have to get up at 6am ring someone up, visit them the same day to get a decent one. Now there are literally none on Autotrader, but with the current market. They really dont sell as fast. Prices are high for standard low mileage examples, and they are for sale a lot longer.

I sold an Oak Green 16v with 70k miles back in 2007. I sold it for £2200, but about a week later the guy i brough it from replaced the clutch and top mounts and stuck it back out for £5k. A guy from here that eventually moved to Dubai (iirc) purchased it.

is there any reason Oak green is such a sought after colour?

Its not really rare. There are loads of them. But it is a very nice colour. Have you ever seen it up close? The flake is lovely in the paint in the sun.

but it's GREEN. each to their own and all that but after white it's the worst colour for a car imho (and i mean that with no offence to anyone with a green or white car)

Cracking cars, good luck with your search. Seen some "fairly" good ones on Pistonheads. Saw a beauty (in Oak Green)  for just under 3k but with 11 previous owners and 170k on the clock

Black is MORE dull than white imo. You cant even see the lines of a car properly in black.

I bought an oak green 8v mk2 from Volkswizard a couple of years ago. Was absolutely mint. ended up selling it cos it was too good for me to use as my daily and had no space to keep a second car.

And you can't see reflections in white. Swings and round abouts - each to their own.

i'm not trying to have an argument with you, and as i've stated i didn't mean to cause offense. i don't like white on cars. rational or irrational, it's my opinion and i'm entitled to it.

back on topic now, that's not what this thread is about. if you feel THAT strongly about trying to change my opinion there is a PM system for that - but i'd advise you not to waste your time.

You get reflections in white, but they're nowhere what you get from a black car. Reflections are ultimately what defines the lines of a car. Both are a total pain to keep clean.

I like Oak Green, it suits the older shape, but you have to admit, it would look naff on a modern car.

Mat - that mk2 is spot on  :happy2: and exactly the same as my old one which was also a minter in white. Thanks for the pics - they bring back such great memories. I sold it to a mate and bought a brand new audi s3 in 2001 and was probably my biggest ever motoring mistake!

If anyone stumbles across E630BTT, my old 1988 white 5 door, in their searches of the 'For Sales', let me know if you can.

I'd probably buy it again. I'd like that with a TFSi engine..
