Title: My Modified Engine Cover - Comments please
Post by: ianv5 on July 07, 2012, 10:15:06 am
After fitting my Twintake I thought I would modify my engine cover.

I am pleased with the results, what do you think?

Group buy coming soon for the black caps. The coolant cap is a vag part, but the washer cap isn't.  I've got a load coming.  :happy2:

Looks very good IMO. Not OTT and very well finished.  :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:

I think I would have also picked out the TURBO word though.

masked the FSI as it was quite easy (large letters) think I might scrape the red off the 'turbo' and go from there. possibly hand paint the FSI and Turbo in black.

Just as a note for anyone else, I was not happy with just using the two mounting points on the front of the cover 9lost the back two due to modifying the cover) as it still seemed quite loose, so I drilled a hole at the back of the cover and inserted a tie wrap to the rubber connecting pipe of the twintake and the engine cover and it seems pretty much sorted, no movement.

Tie wraps are pretty cheap so quite happy cutting and replacing as and when rather than having a loose cover in the bay!

Whilst this does look the dogs bellox, am I not correct in thinking that a cover, if anything, mite in fact shorten the life of yr coil packs??

....I'm surprised by that. I would have thought that an engine cover potentially lengthens the life of coilpacks because it protects them from the weather. The amount of splashing etc you see on an engine cover shows the extent of ingress.

Tempted to agree with you there Robin. Water ingress was obviously present on this failed coil pack (mine).

Was that by any chance cylinder 4?

A little grease around the sealing rubber lip of the coil helps resolve the water ingress

So why does every car manufacture supply cars with an engine cover?

Yes this was cylinder 4. This was one of the original revisions that went with no warning.

Ian, are u suggesting that VW do everything for a reason, lol?? I was led to believe that my coil packs mite be better off now that my cover is off, as they will stay cooler! Of course, the Independent VW Specialist who told me this cud b well off the mark!?
