Right I thought I would do a proper progress thread for this car so here goes.
I bought the car 2 weeks ago. It came with:
18" Monzas,
ED30 splitter
carbon fibre wrapped grill surround
ED30 side skirts
R32 rear with side exit valance
Eibach Sportline lowering springs
The car is just short of 73k miles but recently had the cambelt, water pump etc done at JBS in Chesterfield so I was happy with the mileage if a little more than I had hoped for. I was willing to ignore this fact as I own a VAG specialist company and we will be moving into a new workshop in October so maintaining a high miler isn't an issue.
The car has 1 or 2 rough bits that need sorting. On the interior it needs new grab handles, electric window switches and steering wheel MF blank covers as someone has been in it with a hand full of rings by the looks of it. It is otherwise immaculate inside. These have been ordered up and should be on by next weekend
On the outside, it is in good condition. It could do with a machine polish to get rid of swirls which I will do this month sometime when we get some more prolonged decent weather (IF!)
The Monzas have quite a few kerb marks but they will be replaced by BBS VZ033 18's as soon as BBS pull their finger out and get the new run finished! So hopefully by the end of August the interior will be sorted, the paint will be swirl free and it will have new wheels.
Anyway, pics the day after I picked it up. Apologies for the poor quality and the recycling tub in the pic!

Plans:
Fit my private plate as soon as V5 comes
Machine polish & fit new interior bits as above
BBS VZ 033 18 x 8" with 225/40/18 Uniroyal Rainsport or Falken FK452 rubber
Shark Performance stage 1 remap
De wiper rear
Coilovers, probably KW V1
Then once we move into the unit in October:
WALK
Full Polybush, er, Polybush kit
Whiteline ARB's
Under seal
GNJ Motorsport air intake (In development, watch this space)
Milltek downpipe
TTS engine cover
JS Performance silicone hose kit which we will be helping to develop
K Sport 356mm 8 pots
I am yet to decide how far to push this car power wise. It is very tempting to stick a K04 on it and go to stage 3 but as the S3 was sold to save money for expanding the business and buying a house, chucking £5k+ at a £7k car seems a bit daft when the GTI is a great car out of the box and a brilliant car with a few tweaks. So expect it to have a LOBA big turbo on by the the spring
-
:happy2: nice mate, just remember if you go for the loba, it will mean rods will most deffo need replacing. Oh and if i were you i'd forget the 452's. God damn awfull. I have just ditched them with 5mm of tread left on them, probably the worse tyre i have had.

Not a performance tyre but a great commuting / daily drive tyre as they last forever lol

Thanks :happy2:
It amazes me the difference in opinion on tyres! I had FK452's on both my Astra VXR and S3 and I thought they were great all round
The LOBA comment was a joke really, no way I would spend that much on a £7k car. My plan is to build the business up and run this at stage 1 for 2 years and then get a new demo. Maybe a TTS or another S3.

Interested to see the k sports on and working and behind vw wheels

Car looks good. Looking forward to seeing her evolve :happy2:

Cracking VFM if theyre any good

Well we sell a fair few of the K Sport kits to the Vauxhall lads and they rate them highly. They are absolutely massive! I have some Astra kits in stock and they look great. I know some of the time attack cars run them.
As said, they are fantastic value for money and there are some good pad options for them.
I am hoping they go on easily and run fine as they could be a big seller for us in the VAG scene.

Was discussing them recently with a friend. A kit for a grand whereas replacement rotors on some of the VAG popular BBKs are a grand lol.
If they become popular no doubt they'll take a hike in price with added popularity/VAG tax

Well the RRP was put up by £100 in Feb. So I'm hoping they will stay the same for a while yet.
VAG tax

There awesome brakes, I had 356's on my evo with xp10's in them and were unbelievable!!
Question is, what wheels can we get them behind :happy2:
-
Looking good.
If you decide to sell the lower R32 bumper section i'll gladly take it

I will selling it at some point mate as I want a center exit Milltek. Always loved the R32 rear.

I will have an update next week on this.
Basically I haven't had time to do ANYTHING so far to the car! I leave my job in 3 weeks though to go full time, business moving into a unit etc so this thread will take off then. I have a load of new interior bits waiting to be finished and my BBS VZ's coming this week to replace the Monza's. They have a few kerb marks which I can't be doing with!
We are also working on our own 2.0 TFSI intake to rival the best there is (ITG, Forge etc) so keep an eye out for that!
Plans have been adjusted:
BBS VZ033 wheels wrapped in Uniroyal Rainsport 2 tyres coming this week
KW V1 coilovers later this year
Whiteline anti lift kit
Milltek downpipe with de cat
Shark stage 2 remap
GNJ Motorsport air intake (watch this space)
Forge recirc valve
Our car will also be heading over to JS Performance so they can develop some hose kits for the 2.0 TFSI, really can't wait for that! They will also be supplying the hoses on the intake for us meaning we will be the first to provide an intake with the option of 9 colours!

Plans:
WALK
Full Polybush, er, Polybush kit
....Forget WALK and get the SuperPro version - Same but reputably better poly bushes < You also have the option for the SuperPro lightweight front arms with their ALK consoles already fitted. Get SuperPro polyurethane bushes. AKS can supply them with forum discount I think.
If you are thinking of going for Lobo and more power I would go to a tuner who works with the Lobo products rather than Shark.

We are a SuperPro dealer as well as Whiteline etc so I may look at that thanks. I just know we have sold quite a few WALK and always receive good feedback on them.
The LOBA bit was a joke really, I wouldn't put that much power through the front wheels. We are a LOBA dealer as well as a Shark dealer and I would definitely trust Ben and Mikko at Shark with mapping the car with a big turbo on. They may well have already done one. I am hoping that in late 2013/early 2014 we will be getting another S3 or Golf R and that will get the LOBA big turbo kit on it :)
The most power I will put through this GTI is stage 3. I may well just leave it at stage 2 though as I never intended to spend loads on this car, just a nice daily driver that can shift when I want it to.

....I agree - A GTI Stage 2 (Revo being mine) is plenty fast enough for a road car - Although I am bound to add that better brakes and a few handling mods (including diff) make all the difference and I think are a better spend than just power.
SuperPro used to supply Whiteline with the WALK bushes IIRC. The consoles are virtually the same and so SuperPro's ALK consoles are every bit as functional as WALK but considered to be more durable (check out Tfsi_Mike's WALK bush problem). Either way, it's worth checking out the SuperPro options, especially as you are a dealer.

Yes, agreed I will do mate thanks. We only recently started selling SuperPro bushes and I haven't had time to study the range properly yet.
I imagine the GTI would be awesome at stage 2 with diff, big brakes and a good suspension set up!
-
Like this a lot :)
Where did you get the rear bumper from if you dont mind me asking?

It was already fitted to the car when I bought it mate. It is an R32 rear with a side exit centre section painted. Looks pretty good to be honest :)
-

....In one word: Sweeeet! Not the fastest GTI on the road but hits the sweet spot every time. The UNIbraces have really made a positive difference to the handling - I was quite surprised.
The slippery slope of modding, eh! Lucky for you that you are in the trade :happy2:
-
Right, update time finally. Not a big one but still its something!
The GTI so far hasn't had a great deal of love from me simply due to a lack of time. Just starting to get around to it now. A girl ran into the back of me on the way to the airport at the beginning of October. Nothing major damage wise just a badly scratched rear bumper. Her Ford KA was a bit of a mess so I was impressed with how the GTI held up.
Anyway, she asked if she could pay for the repairs rather than insurance which she did at the bodyshop of my request so the rear bumper has had a full respray. Good to see there are still some honest people about, if one more person had told me to 'get a claim in' I would have punched them squarely in the face
So, mods that have been done so far:
BBS VZ 18 x 8" wheels wrapped in Uniroyal Rainsport 2 225/40/18 tyres
Neuspeed P Flo cold air intake
Shark Performance stage 1 remap
I won't go all APR on you guys and waffle on about how awesome the map is as we are dealers for Shark so I clearly rate the product. Suffice to say I am happy with the power and the way it delivers it.
Plans:
Fit all the new replacement interior parts I have collected
New headlights coming next week as the originals have seen better days
Winter detail and protection next week
Front bumper and side skirt respray in the spring along with a machine polish
KW V1 Coilovers
Then next summer I have a decision to make. I like the GTI, it has been great value for the money I paid for it but I feel we need a more powerful demo car as we make the big move from internet retailers to full on tuners/specialists. Our unit should have been ready by now but due to building delays it won't be until the new year now :sad1:
I sold my stage 3 S3 to fund the move and with hindsight I didn't really need to  Live and learn I guess but I want another car so we can show what we are capable of. I am thinking of another S3 or a BMW 335i Coupe, the only thing that puts me off is I will spend that much time at work over the next few years I will probably never drive it  I would modify the GTI but I feel a 4WD or RWD base would be better so we could really go for big power.

Well the plan to change the car lasted long. After having a good look at the cost and the potential of the GTI I have decided to mod it.
Bilstein B14's ordered

....It's all the fault of this forum of course
The GTI is a very tough act to follow as it truly is such a great allrounder. However, I could totally understand you changing it from a purely business point of view. :happy2:
-
I love the look of the rear on this car, ive been toying with this idea for an R32 rear and found the lower bumper and trim for the GTI for about £130 hmmm

When I weighed everything up, the cars I wanted are around £15k. The GTI would fetch around £7k in its current state. So that is £8k BEFORE I start modding the new car. I have the money but I also want a dyno in 3 years which is £50k on a good day, I also want to expand into wheels and tyres properly over the next year or so. What is a better investment, a 335i coupe or a proper tyre fitting machine and balancer? No contest really :sad1:
So... this will now turn into a proper build thread. Plans are in the early stages but I think the car has potential. Mods to the front end to improve traction are a must though before any major power mods :signLOL: That was the major sticking point really as I miss the 4WD capability of my S3 but I think we can make it work if we set it up properly.

I really like it as well mate. Credit to the previous owner for that! I fancy the idea of an R32 rear though before long.

Looking great so far Graeme :happy2:

Im glad to hear! Looks like this car has massive potential considering your business backgroud. Watching this space! The R32 rear with GTI exhaust exit does look very nice! Full r32 miltek kit would sound the business though

That is the plan eventually, de cat downpipe first though then later I will get an R32 lower panel and sell the centre bit then get the R32 style cat back.

The Bilstein B14's have arrived, should be fitting soon hopefully!

Quality looks great as expected.
I have also just agreed a deal with Cobra to use our GTI to develop a new turbo back exhaust system. We sell quite a lot of Cobra systems for the Vauxhall Astra & Corsa VXR's and quality is always great. Will be good to see a more affordable alternative come to the market :happy2:

We have them for £815 delivered. But we have 5% off all coilovers at the moment so they are £774.25 delivered.

They are our best selling coilover for the Mk5 GTI :happy2:

Hi Graeme,
I'm wanting to upgrade to some decent coilovers (in the new year) but I want em to go a little lower than the H&R springs I have already.
It says on your website that these b14's lower 20-50mm.
I'd like to see some photos of em dropped 50mm if possible.
Do you know anyone on the forum with the B14's? That might have some pics?
Or
Would you recommend some other coilovers that go a bit lower, but still perform?
Cheers
Carlo

When we fit them we will drop them the full 50mm mate I think. I will do anyway even if I raise it up a bit so people can see how low they can go.
There are a lot of good kits out there, the AP/Weitec/KW range are all good as are the Bilsteins.
I'd start a thread and ask for pics though in the general section.
-
I agree. Bilsteins are great on the MKV. More pics are a pre-requisite once fitted Graeme. :happy2:

You any pics of the B14 fitted on yours mate? Can't see any in your progress thread. I'm not after it superlow, I know the B14 don't go too low anyway just interested to see how they look.
