I dropped my car at VW yesterday to get the front wings replaced and got a brand new 1.4 polo as a courtesy car for the week.
For a brand new car it doesn't feel anywhere near as good to drive as my 6 year old gti, even the seats feel horrible.
And the serious lack of power I had to thrash it just to get up to 70 at a reasonable pace compared to changing up at 2k in the gti.
I can't wait to get my gti back next weekend

Same as me at the mo had the polo a week now it's ok for town driving and mtr way stuff but it needs booting to get upto speed but once up at 70 it's not too bad. Seats are crap too I keep banging my leg on the door grab handle

I keep rubbing my leg on the centre console, have you tried adjusting the mirrors? Switch is back to front

Is it :signLOL: mine spazzed out the other day saying I had an indicator bulb out but all were working :rolleye: so was flashing them all fast so just turned car off and re started it all fine now :rolleye:

Felt the same when i sold my mk 1 GTI and got a BMW , the same again when sold my VR6 and now got the Edition 30. Won't make the mistake again. Golfs are something more than a car i think they have personality and some kind of emotional tie with their owners , perhaps why its now about 37 years old. How mnay fanufacturers have run "The same name " car for this long and no sign of it ceasing ?

....I'm so relieved to hear someone else also think that. I was beginning to think that I was turning into a girl.
Like stealthwolf and many other enthusiasts, I've always felt that some machines (including Vulcan bombers!) are living and breathing.

I almost had a mk3 vr6 but the guy decided he wanted more money after we agreed on a price and I paid a deposit, I have had 2 mk4s (1.8gti and a1.9tdi) but never really liked them too much, the mk5 is totally different everything just feels right!
Robin
I laughed at that video before even playing it, fawlty towers is always a laugh

I can completely understand what you mean about the Golf.
The lower powered Polo's have no soul, the Polo GTI however is also a lovely car with soul.
Just look how attached the Hamster got to "Oliver" going across Africa! Some cars have it, some don't.

I have to agree, i spent months trying to find a new car to change too, but just couldnt do it... I think its a love thing
-
Think u boys need to get out more!!!!!!!!!!!! :stupid:

I was recently left out of my GTI for 4 days, but instead I was driving a 61 plate A4 TDI Sline.
I didn't miss my GTI

Other half owns a A4 TDI S Line (11 Reg) and I prefer my Ed30, so each to their own I suppose.

.
Even after a week in a fully loaded S4 Avant I preferred getting back in my GTI. After an hour in a Ford RS which I could have borrowed all day, I couldn't wait to get back in my GTI.
-
I must say, I love the look of the new Polo Blue GT.

Without a doubt, I'm a big lad at 6'6 and 21 stone, so the GTI seats can be uncomfy after driving for a few hours. Although leg room is ample in the GTI, the dash is a little close to me left leg when on the clutch rest.

I sure like the 0-60 and mpg figures.

Cylinder deactivation has got to be the future. I'd love to know how that engine would remap too.
-
^^^^
But what on earth is that cylinder deactivation gonna sound like!?
Sound is a very major factor in our decisions about car purchases.

Well if you read the review of this, and indeed those of the Audi's that use it, and of course the new V8 Continental, it's barely noticeable. Cylinders are only deactivated when cruising between 1400rpm and 4000rpm, so not when you're pushing on.
-
I've read comments suggesting 75+ mpg is possible with this car, which is crazy.

....I wonder if there's any lag/delay if you want to accelerate quite hard from within that rev range.
-
Apparently the need to change from 2 to 4 cylinders is detected and carried out in 13 milliseconds.

....Should I call you a Geek?
But thanks for that info, Andrew - Very helpful without having to spend time reading about something I'm not going to be considering buying in the foreseeable future. :drinking:

No problem, I think the need to balance performance and economy is more important now than ever before. It's heartening to see designers solving these modern day problems without resorting to alternative fuel sources, although I accept that one day it's inevitable they will be forced to.
Imagine a Golf GTI that provides all the performance you have come to expect, but that can do 60 - 70mpg on a motorway cruise... I'd buy into that!

....You are absolutely not wrong!
I much prefer the idea of such technology over battery hybrids etc. Particularly as I nearly got hit recently by a fecking Toyota Pious because I stepped back without hearing it. It was only in a car park but! I then calmly told the owner that the car he had bought was an imposter and explained the dust-to-dust carbon footprint of the real world. He didn't have an answer but seemed interested in what I was saying but just made excuses about buying it for its mpg (which isn't so fantastic anyway) [/rant]
