Title: So started a GTi Conversion
Post by: u01atc8 on May 28, 2009, 12:48:08 am
Hi guys!

So today i spent a fair whack on my car and i still havnt stopped! Decided over the last few weeks to do a GTi conversion on My TDi..

So I bought my car for 5k at xmas.. with around 88k on the clock and 1 owner. So all was good! And bonus i got a full tank in it! Ha! Love the auctions! Reepo Heaven!

So im going to list all the details and maybe some of you guys might tune in and watch my progress.

Golf Mk5 TDi - 1.9 - 105BHP.. Metallic Black - £5,000
Monza Shadows - £600
Audi R8 Oil Cap - £30
Shark Fin Ariel - £30

And today thanks to shaun or (savechip17) im now the owner of one full front end GTi kit! all OEM may i add! (thanks bud)

My other plans for it are:

Engine Re-map
Windows Tinted (still haven't decided on what tint shade to get and i even started a thread about it)
Rear GTi Bumper US edition..
US number plate sytle plates on the back.. German on the front i think.
Red Brake calipers
Fog lights installed

& if possible..

a full leather Reccaro interior and brushed aluminium trim.

So going to be taking some pics of the build and post them up as i progress.

this is something im very interested in, i had read a guide over at rabbitownersclub.com, which required some extensive wiring work, so i was just going to pop the fogs in for the looks and wire them in the future but having a switch near the esp switch is intriguing have you got any pics as to where youve seen this?

I will dig out a picture i have somewhere..

But its fairly sinple.. they just run a line from the battery from the switch to the lights. Im just thinking of putting it in one the blank button spaces nearest the drivers seat.

yeah makes sense for you to do that, i rang my local vw dealers to see how much they'd quote, said £60 each for the lamps (not incl grilles) and £88 per hour for labour!

how much is your guy charging you if you dont mind me asking

WHA!!! My VW said that it couldnt be done by them.. as they could relay it back into the headlamp switch even with a new one ( i smell something fishy there though) im actually sure that they can. `but anyway,  my auto electric place charges £45 an hour.. and the lamps and grills are off ebay.. rough prices though but seem thjem as low as £15.. but i poted for xenon style ones.. so cost me £25

i see and have they given you an estimate of how long it might take? i think dealerships differ everywhere some will they it can and some will say it cant be done it is rather strange.

They said roughly 2 hours..  But you never know with these things

So the wheels go on tomorrow! Woo! So once they arrive and i get them unpacked ill take some photos!

Had the car detailed today! But the buggers missed a spot or 2 or five thousand! Never using them again!

Keep your eyes pealed!

Ok Guys,

Finally the wheels Arrived! Hoorah!

I was so careful unpacking them, Making sure not to nick them with the knife.. And all was well sat the wheel at either side of the car ready to swap over. i only had the standard jack so had to make do.. Wish i had the trolley jack now though.. As the jack fell when i released the hand brake and well the car fell! Knocking one wheel over and scratching the surface on all the spokes! So absolutley raging at myself! Can anyone say refurb! ha!  :fighting: Shoot me now! :signIWS:

The wheels are the new GTi Wheels called Monza 2 Shadows! They look Shweeet!
I drive down the shore near my house and everyone is staring! Its great.. and wow so much more responsive and for some reason faster  :driver:

What you guys think? Opinions....

So anyway.. first pictures for you guys

I want those alloys!,  they look the dogs danglies. Real bad luck with the scissor jack, you have to take precaution when using it as i too dont have a trolley jack, so brick the other wheels just to be on the safe side.

Are those alloys Reps or Genuine ones?

Looks great and in the words of Joesgti, " GET IT SLAMMED"  :happy2:

Well i would love to say they are genuine.. but they are reps. Although, the guys at vw today where saying the were amazing! Not a thing on them is different! TBh, they are the same wheels, made by the same people. So it doesnt bother me.

And i plan on fitting eilbach springs to it.. think 35mm??

They look good mate, now clean your drive you dirty bugger!!

Hah... Yeah T88YOMM i made a little mess by the end! Its all tidy now though.. Hoorah!

So popped down to Newcastle today to see (Savechip) shaun.. As i couldnt get a courier to pick up the GTi bumper..

So a 400 mile round trip  and im now in posession of my GTi bumper and grills!

So will get down to b&q tomorrow and buy some tools. Will get some pics of my attempt at fitting it.

So im looking for a guide on fitting it if anyone knows one.. or if anyone can beat shaun to it.

Ok as promised, i have some pics of the next stage of my gti body conversion.

I got up at like 12 and set to work on this about 1.. `got finished for 5.. Not bad i think.. as i had to do a little modding to the bumper to make it fit my car. (for some reason i now have screws.. lots of them left over..  :happy2: always a sign of a good job!  :jumping: Just wait till i drive off and it hits the deck!  :driver:

From the Original

Looks miles better that mate, what are you doing about the fogs? I was thinking that you could thrown the R32 grills in there as they have no fogs. I know they are different but they look quite good against the honeycombe  :happy2:

So hold on.. would i be rite in thinking that your splitter was stolen? if so sorry to hear that matey

Would i be rite in thinking that the splitter is under £50 from vw dealer? As i think im going to change mine to white.. but that once i have my wrapping done. So would be good to see what it will look like. and will give me the choice of changing it..
