Title: Found Corossion..cause..solution!
Post by: brady88 on July 19, 2012, 09:01:31 pm
There are so many threads on corossion I thought it my duty to add another  :signLOL:

Basically I bought the car last October after searching all the usuall areas (wings, boot badge etc) for any warning signs of the dreaded rust! It was clean..so I dropped the cash, grabbed the stash and headed home quite pleased with my purchase  :jumpmove:

On Sunday July 15...2012...I made the discovery that we all fear  :ashamed:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fab31%2Fbrady_1988%2Fdc1f6baf.jpg&hash=4b2a257224dce33ebcd8fc7291395e2360dbe1f0)

The other side looked clean but I thought I would dig a little deaper tonight... and was glad I did!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fab31%2Fbrady_1988%2Ff9d0718e.jpg&hash=14b4fe7098937a888e319d5fa47d9cf908395b6c)

I was also amazed at the amount of dirt that builds up behind the arch liner
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fab31%2Fbrady_1988%2F4dca9c17.jpg&hash=4ec6fae445adae5531928c04f51d71074972d3a1)

After a glood clean out... which I strongly recommend before the damp rotts the sills
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fab31%2Fbrady_1988%2Fc4e48b2c.jpg&hash=4e3eaf4dbb580e5e0d8df75afee591baca4c49db)

And so on to the offending object... dirty, soggy, foamy b*stard! Quite clearly soacking wet and probably never dries out!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fab31%2Fbrady_1988%2Fe638b7c6.jpg&hash=9e3acd3f339871444fe9914cb536f465c904a82b)

So... off to Ingram's Volkswagen Ayr I went, spouting the 12 year corossion warranty bible at the guy behind the desk  :fighting:

He tells me "It takes a couple of weeks to process the claim, but I can't see it being any problem. I'll give you a call soon and get you booked in."
Cheers mate  :happy2: just hope you keep your word!

So for anyone who hasn't heard about the best worst kept secret... get under the arches and remove that foamy little f*cker before its too late

spotted this years ago on my mk4 and always made sure the areas were clean om my mk5,just like you have above.

i also trimmed the foam back when i cleaned mine,  but im not sure if doing that would affect the warranty claim.

Good luck getting yours done bud, i hope it hassle free for you  :happy2:

I do that on all my cars at least once a year, front and rear, it's amazing how much crap gets caught down there. At the same time, I clean under the arches properly and the wheel well covers get a good scrubbing too.

Took mine back today for the very same problem. I was told the same thing that it takes a while to process but it won't be a problem.

The guy did say that they fit new dampers instead of the sponge and it applies to all cars with Z1K in the VIN.  Let me know if you have Z1K in your vehicle ID number.

Yep... just checked... Z1K  :happy2:
So what do they replace it with.. rubber damper?

The once a year deep clean sounds like a plan... was quite easy so well worth saving the new wings (hopefully) from getting into the same state!

Going back in tomorrow to tell them about the other wing which I just few covered tonight so fingers crossed its the same guy and I'll bring up the Z1K thing aswell

Judging from another thread which has a poll of 'year of production' affected by corossion there hasn't been many (or any) cases reported after 2007. But don't let that stop you from checking...epecially as there will still be the tonne of dirt stuck at the sill!

Its better spending the time just now rather than waiting till its too late.
Takes about half an hour...jack up, wheel off, 8 screws, liner off  :happy2:

in that little alcove behind the sill, is there any means or way of filling it in with something else that would A. stop more muck from getting in there in the future and prevent rust. And B not hold moisture so that it wouldn't have an adverse affect like the foam of holding moisture and causing rust. for example like expanding foam (which does hold moisture like conventional foam) or other such things?
the expanding foam is just an example... i doubt it'd be effective?

Guys, brilliant post. Really useful, just done this to mine.

Might be a stupid question but what's the foam actually there for? It doesn't affect anything taking it out does it?!

Sound proofing, it was originally meant for diesels but they fitted it to all models

Glad to hear that ingram at ayr are playing ball and not sending you off packing. I managed to get my claim done through crow rd vw in glasgow. 2 new wings and painted. Asked to get the bonnet and bumper done while it was in to freshn it all up. Just payed the extra cost.Couldnt have asked for better service VW side but Had to take car back to the approved bodyshop as there was a run in the bumper.

Took the car back into Ingrams to show them the damage on passenger wing...again the guy was really helpful. He told me as it was only just starting to corrode VW would tell them to repair it and it would come back through...so I've to been advised to wait for it coming through and I'll get a new wing!  :happy2:

Just hope they do a good job wing the new wings and blend it in properly or it won't be leaving the paintshop!!
