Title: Bird photography
Post by: PND on July 21, 2012, 08:54:32 pm
Following on from my last thread, I recently bought a secondhand Canon EOS 500D off a work colleague.  I have since been out and about learning how to use it!  It is the first SLR I have ever owned so it's all new to me at the moment.

Here are some of my recent pics..

As you can see from the last photo of the kingfisher, I have quickly realised that I could do did with a bigger, better, longer lens! I knew when I bought it that the 75-300 kit lens was OK for starters, but wasn't great.  It is the non-IS version.  I have been looking at the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM.  Anyone got experience of it?  Any other recommendations?  Up to £800-£900 to spend on secondhand..  It's going to be for wildlife and bird photography as I am really enjoying it.

Cheers!

Paul.

EXCELLENT!!! I shamefully admit to loving photographing the odd bird too  :happy2:

The 100-400mm is what I've got and its mega. Perfect on a crop sensor camera as you effectively end up with a 640mm lens    Its great for wildlife, great for Motorsport.... EPIC lens!

You were lucky to see a Kingfisher too, we also saw one today but too far to photgraph.

Sorry... ive just cost you 1000 pounds!

Hi Rich

Oh no, that's bad news... another hit due on my bank balance!

Is there anything to look out for when buying secondhand, apart from the obvious of no scratches, etc?  Any recommended places to buy from, or places to avoid?

Thanks for the advice.

Paul.

Brilliant shots!!!

Thanks for that Steve.  I've surprised myself!  Just wish I'd started 20 years ago!

My advice is not to buy a secondhand on unless you know 100% of what life it has had. They are a very very complicated push pull lens and can go wrong if not looked after. (mine needs servicing because its had a lot of hammer)

Drop the extra on a new one... you will not regret it. If you do regret it ill give you the difference back

I know what you mean.. it's the same as everything else, you get what you pay for.

I'd better have a look in my garage and see what I can find to sell..

I think I would be happy buying from a reputable dealer if it came with some form of warranty.

My understanding is that these lenses can suffer from dust ingress if you are wanting to watch out for something.

You could always factor a service into the price if you are haggling.

I also visit a Lotus forum believe it or not, and in it's photography section, this guy started posting a couple of pics of a kingfisher which were superb, so i asked him for a link to his flickr album.
Well as uncle knobhead would say, " fook my tall hat"  check some of these out.  :notworthy:

Great... but watch your settings. The last 2 have a lot of noise, I presume you have used (either by accident or unknowingly) a very high ISO setting. Try and use the camera in Av or Tv mode if you can.

I'd left it in 'sports' mode  :ashamed: as I had been trying some 'birds flying overhead' shots.. thanks for the feedback.  I've usually got it in Av mode.  :happy2:

All your shots are excellent, PND  :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:

You have succeeded in capturing the typically characteristic mannerisms of each species [OMG! I'm sounding like Sheldon in "The Big Bang Theory"!]

I see all sorts of birds in my garden as I live in a small river corridor and have lots of trees. But I just use binoculars and know the limits of my pocket-sized compact digital camera. I have watched birds all my life and also owned free-flight Macaws for many years.

The only creatures with wings which I manage to photograph are insects.

Goldfinch after Nyger seed?

I've just seen a Goldfinch on my 'bird cafe' feeder too. You can almost set your clock by their regularity. It's Collared Doves time at around 5:00pm. Do you have any shots of those? - Very subtle but beautiful plumage.

Very nice........again!  :congrats:

Am a fan of Doves Robin, we have two (named Gert and Daisy by my daughter some years ago, not sure how long they live but am sure it's the same two birds) that appear most days to clear the garden of all food and the other birds and they are (in their own way) beautiful birds. One of them spends an inordinate amount of time staring into our pond at the fish though and once even fall in, now that would have been a good photo.

....Are Gert and Daisy White Doves? I've noticed that 'my' Collared Doves are very peaceful and happily feed alongside all the other birds in very close proximity. White Doves are an established symbol of Peace. Collared Doves have only been established in Britain for about 60 years.

I have a small wildlife pond (no fish but Palmate Newts etc etc) nearby but the Doves only go to a bathing tray I have amongst the pond's surrounding rockery and never to the pond's edge. Perhaps if I didn't have a bird bath they would go to the pond to drink.

Stuffing its beak with sunflower kernels!  Apart from the one bird feeder, my garden consists of a lawn and that's it!

You jammy barstewards, Paul!! I've been trying to spot and photograph Dragonflies all year. Do you want me to ID them for you or do you already know their species?

Plenty of Damselflies around my pond though. For that I'm gonna post one of my Damselfly pics in your thread!  :P

....Yep, methinks that the first pic is of a male Southern Hawker - Most common south of a line between the Humber and Ribble river estuaries but now spreading northwards.

Other two pics are definitely a female Brown Hawker and photographed while egg-laying. If it's in your pond, be prepared for the annihalation of many other forms of water life! The larvae are very predatory and very effective ambushers. I have found the exuvia (moulted skin) of a Hawker larvae in my pond. I have spent literally hours photographing the stages of emergence of several Damselflies and it is my hope to do the same with a Dragonfly. But I won't hijack your thread with pics.

The ancestors of Dragonflies are one of the most ancient species on Planet Earth and fossils show that some had wingspans of several feet!

Bit annoyed I didn't get the bottom of the swan's wing tip in shot... first time I've tried taking 'flying' shots!  Here are the others from today..

....Yeah, I noticed that but it's still a great shot.

These latest 2 are again, so very 'aeroplane'.

I saw a Dragonfly in flight today at the hillclimb but couldn't photograph it. I photographed the cars instead.

Feisty characters aren't they!

Nyger seeds are what attracts my Goldfinches, even the youngsters. You need a special Nyger feeder though.

I got loads of sunflower seeds in a few weeks!:

Cheers, Paul  :drinking:

That cutie-pie is a juvenile female Goldfinch. I haven't seen more than 5 in one session at my 'Bird Cafe' so far but I'm glad the parents introduce their young to the cafe.

I saw a very handsome male Bullfinch at my table a couple of times last year but not this year so far.

Word has got around..  Hmmm, sunflower kernels.. nom, nom, nom..

....So, that feeder of yours is for sunflower kernels only, not the whole seed?

I have an abundance of all the tits visiting my 'Bird Cafe' but when my sunflower heads turn to seed, the Blue Tits will be all over them. For now it's the turn of Hoverflies, Bumble and Honey Bees, and the occasional Butterfly.

I decided on sunflower kernels to attract more variety and to have less mess!  Great tits, blue tits, coal tits, goldfinches and house sparrows so far.  Plus squirrels who 'hoover up' any spillages!  I'll be getting some more feeders soon, ready for the winter months.

Really weird how they 'dive-bomb' about!  Quick flap of the wings and then close them until they start to fall out of the sky!  They were some way off and the photos were taken at 400mm zoom and cropped so I'm surprised you can even see them!

....I can enlarge my view of any image on my Mac (27") via the TrackPad, just by a two-finger spread gesture. So I had a closer look at your pics.  :happy2:

All the Finch and Sparrow family have that 'drop' flight pattern. Wood Pigeons do it too but in more regular shorter swoops.

A mate of mine (local born and bred West Dorset man) is an experienced fly fisherman (various official bodies consult him) and tells me that where there are Kingfishers, if you stick out a long branch one will sometimes use it as a perch to hunt from. More than once he has had one land on his Carp rod!

^^^^ Stunning photo. I love how you have captured the dynamic legs and bird's balance.  :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:

Great photo there... for some reason when viewing that pic online it has a blue cast. I opened it up in photoshop and the colours are completely normal  :stupid:

....I'm now realising that I don't look at photos with such a highly critical eye as you do, Rich. All I see (unless a cast or something is absolutely spoiling a shot) is the action or mood which is captured and composition and general colour and/or effect. It's probably because I'm using a ~£300 pocket camera and not thousands of pounds worth of finest camera gear which would give me higher expectations of.

What browser are you using Rich?  Looks the same in Photoshop as it does in Chrome for me..

I'm getting better results using the camera is 'sports mode' as the faster shutter speeds are giving better results.  Obviously getting high ISO values because of it as I'm pretty much at the 400mm end of the lens and therefore more noise than ideal.  Is there any way around this?  I suppose while there's plenty of light about, it's OK.  I am now aiming for quality rather than quantity when I go out!

Everyone's feedback and encouragement is very welcome!

Using safari mate... its odd that it displays perfectly on flickr, but not on this forum.  :stupid:

Anyway...looking at that photo for example the shutter speed it 1/2000 which is very short and ISO 1000 which is very high, you could have used 1/500 and then you could have used ISO ~250. Use the camera in Tv mode and select a shutter speed of about 1/400-1/500 for birds in flight photos.  :happy2:

Weird!  Looks OK in Safari as well for me.  Thanks for the advice - I'll give it a go next time.  I wish I'd started 20 years ago with this photography lark!

Viewed on latest Safari on my Mac, there is a bluish tinge to some parts but the wing's secondary feathers are pure white and any blue is tending to look like blue sky reflections on the water.

But Rich is right: All photography is a balance between aperture and speed, with ISO rating thrown in to help it where needed. So, in this case, you can afford to reduce some of your settings in order to achieve a better balance. Each setting delivers different properties.

You're doing very well, PND, in my opinion and it's more important to get the shot and enjoy it.

....What you do have is an 'eye' for it - The ability to recognise the moment you want to capture and share or remember. Some people can have all the gear and the technical knowledge but not have 'the eye'. At least with all the gear, you have something to aspire to without being restricted by your gear.

Female Chaffinch (occasional) and Dunnock (a daily regular) at my Bird Cafe today. The Chaffinches are in my garden but mostly in the big tree rather than 'cafe'.

Fine photos as usual from you - You have the gear to capture them.

Cheers!

Paul.

Nice pic. Kites are enormous birds. Loads of them around the M40 corridor just out of the m25. There was a breeding program there i believe.

@phil; Amzing shot there bud, I saw one in the garden, straight out the kitchen window a few months ago, sat on the wall, but I couldn't walk quietly enough or quickly enough to grab the camera... once I'd come back it was gone; it looked like it had dive bombed a small bird which was left injured in the garden, made a dusty dent in the conservatory window... poor little beggar, it was mashed but still alive, so had to do the decent thing :(

Get a lot of wild birds of prey around here, but never have I seen one staring back at me from sucha close distance… curses for not having a camera.

I've read the Kite is a very lazy bird and has a love for easy prey along with collecting strange shiny objects and storing them in their nests.

Its true... even thought they are classed as a bird of prey they are primarily scavengers.

Pure luck, saw him or her sitting on the fence grabbed the camera and to my amazement it completely ignored me whilst I took the picture. Bit of a regular visitor to our garden there's often a pile of feathers on the lawn from its victims, seen it a few times in action grabbing its prey.

Just got back from the Cayo Islands and the variety of birds wherever you looked was amazing. They never stayed still for long as they were always fighting and chasing each other. I wish i could have snatched a bit more time taking pics without my son grabbing my attention.

Beautiful texture and couloirs on this Heron when close up.

This fella used to arrive every afternoon and would take a crab out of your hand if you were brave enough. He would also get dive bombed by some sort of peregrine falcon regularly which was less than half its size.

This Humming bird was virtually impossible for me to photograph, they are no bigger than your thumb and have the dexterity of a blue bottle. It was almost dark and I took about 50 shots of it without hardly any catching it in focus.   :sad1:

These are all lovely, Tom! Great colour, striking compositions, capturing typical moments in the birds character.

I belong to several wildlife photography groups on facebook which have very high standards of posted photos including some by professionals and yours make the grade.

I've forgotten, are you a Nikon or a Canon user?

Hi Robin, just a 550 D with good glass and top models for posing, I learnt a long while a go if the model is good it sure helps with perception of quality.

I'm about to get a 70D with L glass plus a Sony RX100 II truly pocket-size compact which shoots RAW to replace my FinePix which I have worn out!

Wow, great shots guys really dramatic!

I'm a keen fisherman & the oppurtunities I have missed through not having a decent camera is unreal! - definately on my list this year!!

Once a pair of Otters swam past and then started playing right in front of me, absolutely killed the fishing but boy was it worth it!

Also there is what I believe to be a white buzzard resident to an area I fish in Somerset; Ive been told it's an Osprey but I'm fairly certain its a buzzard so I will endeavour to get a shot of it if anyone can help ID it?

Hi Robin

Your latest shots are really good!  Are these with a Canon EF 400 mm F/5.6 USM lens?  I'm looking at getting one to replace my 100-400mm as I'm nearly always at the 400mm end!

Nice and sharp!

....Yes, I was interested in the Canon 100-400mm in spite of having the 70-200mm f4L with 1.4x Extender (making it fully functional as a 98-280mm f5.6L) but a very experienced bird photographer friend advised me that the prime Canon 400mm f5.6L USM (no IS) is a 'better' lens - He has owned both.

It would be nice if it had IS (Image Stabilisation for non Canon users) because I reckon my keeper rate would be higher but when I get it right (as the Robin singing shot) it's spot on. I personally find it easier to steady with the tripod ring mount fitted.

I now exclusively shoot RAW and can then enhance what's already captured by the camera body's sensor (Canon 70D). But if it's a turd, you can't polish it!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FRedRobin_05%2FPHOTO_TESTS%2FLensCammo_00408vs.jpg&hash=b4246c7ac3501e9cf8491c52151495a76d5ec340)

^ The 70-200mm is shown with the Canon 1.4x Extender fitted. It also fits the 400mm but then makes it a f8L and kills autofocus on the 70D body. You also really need a tripod/monopod to steady it at 540mm (actually more on my crop-sensor body). The Extender works beautifully on the 70-200mm though and lives on it most of the time.

Another 400mm sharp shot....

Providing you can keep the shutter speed above the focal length of the lens, it pretty much negated the need for IS.

Hi Robin

Thanks for that.  The 100-400mm has done the job of getting be interested and pointing me down the road I want to follow so it looks like a 400mm prime could be on the cards.  I've already got a 1.4x extender as well and f8 is no problem for autofocus on my 5D.  :happy2:

....That's a good guide (focal length taking into account body sensor factor) but I'm convinced that IS on a lens can help (unless on a tripod).

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the 400mm f5.6L USM was introduced before Canon offered IS. If they ever produce a new version of it what's the betting it will have IS?

No IS on the f5.6 but it is available on the f4 and f2.8 400mm. You don't want to ask the prices of those though.  :surprised:

....That's a good guide (focal length taking into account body sensor factor) but I'm convinced that IS on a lens can help (unless on a tripod).

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the 400mm f5.6L USM was introduced before Canon offered IS. If they ever produce a new version of it what's the betting it will have IS?

Ohh there is no doubt it helps in certain situations. But, lets you your robin photo. 1/3200 shutter speed. Now... unless you have had 10000 cups of coffee and are "shacking like a dog" then IS wont make a blind bit of difference.

I cant see canon making a 400mm with IS.

No IS on the f5.6 but it is available on the f4 and f2.8 400mm. You don't want to ask the prices of those though.  :surprised:

....Too right!! They cost many thousands even at competitive and reliable retailers like Park Cameras and Wex. I would still love one though.

....Here's one before I had a cup of coffee or breakfast the other morning. It was a very dull day and it's shot at 1/320 shutter speed and ISO 3200 - On the 400mm f5.6L non IS:

^^ yep.. shutter speed far too slow to capture a flying bird and it be "sharp"

....But I love it as an image. Photography is about more than just being sharp in my opinion.

....Each to their own, Rich. I have shown that I can take both razor-sharp photos and arty ones. Photography, whether of birds or any other subject, can be a technically pristine or an evocative image (or both) - They are both equally valid, imo. Do you not agree with that?

Yes, I would have loved to have captured my last posted photo as a razor-sharp one but I failed at that spontaneously grabbed attempt. But it doesn't mean that the result can't still be enjoyed for different reasons.

If you don't agree then please understand that I do respect your different approach and am not trying to suggest you are wrong - We are simply different in our attitudes towards photography (and music! but much less so about cars).

I am not being dragged into another debate robin. My point was about image stabilisation and shutter speed.

....I'm not seeking to drag you into a debate, Rich - I have already said that I think our individual approaches are different and each to their own and that I respect those differences.

You know me well enough by now I hope to realise that I am very open in expressing/sharing my views in what I post and don't expect everyone to agree with me.

It's just an open discussion prompted by the various images posted in this thread.
