Title: 2nd hand family car recommendations for £2K???
Post by: monte on July 30, 2012, 10:28:52 pm
Any ideas on a suitable car for a young couple with a baby?

Only got a budget of £2000 and after something at least Golf size (no smaller) that's also good on fuel!

Thanks

Small petrol engine car is the only way for cheap miles. Only consider a TDI if your munching motorway miles.

My Litlle Hyundai i10 with its 5 doors and as much room inside it as my Ed30 is perfect. Cheap everything ,insurance, tax, £20 gets you 175 miles in return, ideal for the town and short trips. Nearly 55 mpg and no tax to pay..insurance the same as a packet of pork scratchings.
Only thing is you would need to IMO use your £2k as a deposit and get into a brand new car and have around £80-90 a month finance deal for around 4years. But that's up to you on terms etc.

You buy an old car, the have to add the maintanance costs to that...tyres, repairs, whereas a new car you don't.

Add to that a 5 year manufactures warranty, it's worth considering. They come with quite a good spec too as standard.

Some peeps might laugh, but seriously it's the best decision I made regarding choosing to run a 2nd car

Mk mk4 tdi 110 always gave me 500 miles per tank no matter how I drove it.

I only have a 15mile commute to work and a weekly 25 mile trip to see/collect my son.

Mk4 golf/bora as above, but if your wanting newer, friends have just done the same and bought a 55 plate megane 1.6 vvti, seems perfect for the short family school runs. best bit, done 58k, full mot & tax, £1700.

I'm going a different direction. depends if they are style conscious or just want a good car?

Peugeot 406 HDI.

Inbetween my audi S3's I needed a run around and picked up a 2001 406 HDI executive spec for about £2300. Really nice comfy and cheap to run car. I used to get 45mpg (700miles to a tank!) and its massive inside and was nice and comfy to drive and be in.

Its not going to turn any heads but its a great family car.

mine was almost identical to this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2002-PEUGEOT-406-2-0-HDi-110-Executive-AC-/140797532027?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item20c82fd77b#ht_1052wt_1263

That's a cheap puppy to run!

Apart from a deposit, is it cheaper to run this as well as your Ed30 due to the fuel savings you would make by not having to run the Golf all the time? (if that makes sense)

 :happy2:

Oh and Carlo, a VW Bora 1.9 TDI 130 Sport. Link to Parkers Car Guide review and facts and figures. No real point going for a lesser spec'd model as the fuel economy is really no difference. Had one of these a few years ago and more than capable car for all round needs.

I am quids in...just.. When you factor all costs etc, But the Eddy gets a well earned rest and does now save on the wear n tear rates/costs that come with regular usage of the GTi.
