Title: Top mounts....talk to me!
Post by: Russ_leeds on July 30, 2012, 10:56:05 pm
Car had mot a last week and the only thing mentioned was an advisory of slight movement on drivers top mount.

The car is lowered on h&r 35mm springs so not slammed. Would it be best to replace with standard ones or are there any options aftermarket wise?

Thanks

Loads aftermarket wise.

THS - not overly harsh from what I've read and experienced
BSH - Fairly Harsh so I'm told but no experience of
VWR - Red Robin has these iirc. But they do different types I think Road & Race
VF - I had these in my last car and have a set ready to go on the new one. Not overly harsh and make the car sound like a 6 pot turbo. Slight increase in noise at 70mph but nothing too intrusive. Otherwise you don't notice unless your flooring it.
REVO - Basically re-branded BSH.

Would these ground control mounts fit onto Bilstien b16's or any other aftermarket coilover kit for that matter?

haha no plans for coilovers yet as too many speed bumps in my area, although I do want some b8 dampers next year to go with my H&R springs  :happy2:

Bad Mike!

They do top mounts for any suspension setup which includes the Bilsteins.

I do have them on my car and easily run -3 degs on full adjustment with the TT hubs and wishbones.  Mike's are on their way and I aim to run -2.45 degs on his Leon.

Cheers for the info, its deffo something i plan to do when i come round to sorting the bushes and alignment out. Hows the tyres wear and straight line grip with that much camber alex? Front end must feel pretty epic though :driver:

Does it change the way the car sounds or just in the cabin to how the driver hears it?

I take it you dont like the inner tread depth on Mike's tyres then.

Hasn't really affected the straight line grip.  Just improved turn in and cornering grip.  Found its helped loads with wet corning grip.

If you run -3 degs camber and only hit the motorway then the inner edges of the tyres will wear, but if you track or fast road everywhere then the wear is fairly even accross the tyre.

The thing I notice with the standard rubber top mounts is the flex and bounce in them before the damper starts to work.  The solid top mounts allow the coilover to work straight away.

Doh! I was under the impression I couldn't use the PSS10

Take it you have to order specific mounts for each coilover?

The solid top mounts dont make the ride "crashy" do they? Other than that i think ill do these, probably not -3 degrees, maybe -2 ish :happy2:

I bought some OEM equivalent top mounts and bearings from Eurocarparts (or a similar site) for £54 delivered (2 of each).

My H&R springs have killed one of my top mounts I recon.
