Title: Wrapped radio surround and top vents
Post by: JoeDarKa on July 31, 2012, 11:48:48 am
Has anyone got any pics? I had a go with a spare top vent section i have and looks a bit rubbish! I need to see how people have done it around the vents and dials for opening and closing the vents!

Cheers!

First attempt:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fg477%2FBuryFan1%2Fddbee923.jpg&hash=c1464d441629e862a4871ecf2d36f78f1d17fd38)

Doesnt look it in the pics but its very rough in places, the dial part looks crap and the vents are puckered / torn where my blade wasnt sharp enough

Second attempt:

And finished:

^^^^ looks really good.  :congrats:

Have done mine in Gloss Black, a little dull compared to yours!  :signLOL:

I used Helix Gloss Blck vinyl (bought from eBay) and easy to work with, with no bubbles at all and holds its final shape if heated to the right temperature. Also painted the plastics first, gives much better adhesion to vinyl.

Don't you find the top half reflects on to the windscreen, I did mine in silver and got fed up with seeing its refection all the time

I fitted a grey one, it looks good but reflects as well.

If your asking about my Gloss Black dash, in a word, Yes!  :sad1:

It doesnt bother me too much as it looks much better than OEM and it matches the surround of the headunit.

Painted (helps the vinyl to stick and not lift)

Do like the look of the gloss black. I wanted to do this, but for the life of me I couldn't get the vent assembly out. Seemed to be plastic welded to the cover. I was too afraid to break anything so left it as is. I would really like to paint it though to match the RNS 510 and the Mk6 climate panel.

Pull from the back and angle it upwards and forwards. A few clips of mine have possibly broken but got no rattles since doing it

Have to say, my origonal plan was to stickerbomb mine. Seen a few examples and the drawbacks. eg. stickers pealing. But that looks the sh*t. I was also skeptical about the gloss black. But that also looks pretty nice. I have vinyl wrapped my interior strips. never got round to doing the dash trim around the stereo

I will get some up for you soon! I also did my steering wheel inserts and hazard button. Ah... also in the boot, the plastic plate thing on the right hand side that you shove crap in  :signLOL:

The only other wrapping ive done to my car is to slightly darken the wing mirror lights with light grey tint
