Title: GTi to GT conversion
Post by: davoaj on August 05, 2012, 07:28:31 pm
Afternoon everyone!

Been a while since I've been on here after having lost my 56 plate GTi back in 2010, but surprise surprise the VAG itch is back.

Currently driving an E90 330i, which is a very capable car but I just don't have the same connection with it that I had with the GTi. In between car was a MKII GTi 16 valve, which obviously had a fair bit of character as well

Anyway, whilst I crave the GTi daily drive again, I'm understandably not so keen on the attention a GTi attracts. So, I'm thinking of getting a five door GTi and doing a GT conversion. Crazy I know, and far from what the forum would usually experience but I'm looking to go a little more understated!

In my mind, I'd do the following to start with:

1. Replace grills with GT grills - is this a straight swap? Cost doesn't seem prohibitive.
2. Alloys off, replace with either some charlstons or maybe some 17" CH's.
3. De badge obviously
4. Calipers painted anthracite

Anything else worth thinking of?

Would keep all parts so I could put it back if I wanted to. But I don't think this would cost much really, wheels aside.

What do you reckon guys? (braces himself for ridicule :rolleye:

I like the street sleeper look. I thought the fronts were different be it is do able. I'm sure I've seen a gt to gti thread somewhere. Just reverse that :-)

Bit of a ridiculous post if u ask me. GTI is hardly an aggressive looking car. If u really want tho just get a plain colour such as silver, 17" Monzas and take all the GTI badges off.

Don't really see how it's ridiculous. Might not be to your taste, but equally what you do to your car might not be to mine.

How different are the grills on the GT/GTi?

GTI to GT is straight swap grille wise. Top, bottom and fog surrounds.
I really like the GT front end, sure they'd be plenty GT owners willing to swap too.

Thanks for confirming, thought it would be.

Had thought about swap potential, but would probably keep hold of originals.

Got to say loving the Mk5 community again. BMW is just not the same.

Do what I did and buy a Skoda Octavia VRS mk2. Same chassis and running gear but different shell.

I know what you're saying and I do like the VRS, but I'm just a bit of a Golf nut and always have been.
