Title: Auto Headlights issue
Post by: nadlad on August 06, 2012, 08:18:35 pm
Hi,

Noticed last few days that my lights when set to 'auto' seem to be coming on at around dusk time am pretty sure only the inside lid ash lights used to come on and then when it was slightly darker the lights would come on.

Ie now the lights are coming on in the low sun it's hardly dark but they come on now previously it used to be a bit later say around hen the sun goes down 9pm ish any ideas.

I know there's a issue as the coming home light doesn't activate when I take key out of the ignition which must mean its not dark enough for them to be triggered but as soon as you hit dusk the lights come on with interior any help

Hope I didn't confuse u

Perfect time for them to come on. Far too many people don't switch their lights on early enough. Even when the sun is setting behind you, you should have your lights on. Rather be seen than not.

My auto lights sometimes come on but not the coming home lights when I stop. Yours sound normal to me, possibly the darker nights closing in ?

The golf's auto lighting system, as far as I'm led to believe, utilises a dusk sensor as well as the windscreen-mounted light sensor, to activate the headlights while the sun is setting. This is not a two-stage system, i.e. if your interior dash lights come on, then the headlights are on also  :happy2:

it is 2 stage as before the dash lights used to come on and then when it got more darker the headlights used to come on, at the moment i feel there comign on when its not dark, like now its 3pm its raining and the auto lights are on?

This might sound silly but is your windscreen dirty?
If there is dirt infront of the sensor it might think its darker than it actually is?

Apart from my needles that are permanently lit, my dash lights only come on when the headlights do by either me switching them on or automatically.

If the lights are set to auto they will switch on if the windscreen wipers do a few continuous wipes which maybe why yours came on today

As above. The lights will come on if set to auto and the wipers start up continuously. Once again, lights (and not those useless side lights) should always be switched on when it's raining. Sounds to me like they are working perfectly.

Yeah possibly must be working fine I didn't think they come on when it's raining during daytime. Also I think if there was a fault the coming home lights would come during the day if the lights have been on when you take key out of ignition which they don't do must be ok. Coming home lights only come on when it's pretty dark makes sense
