Title: Snow Foam and Iron X
Post by: nads1_uk on August 15, 2012, 07:35:45 am
I'm hoping to get my first snow foam lance and iron x delivered over the next day or so and I'm after a couple of pointers;

1  The car has never been snow foamed before - how long do I leave it on the car to dwell before rinshing off?  Do you just leave it to dwell or do you have a aggitate it?

2  How long do you leave the iron x on the wheels for?  If left too long does it cause any lasting damage?

Any other advice on using either of these 2 products would be appreciated as I haven't used either before.

Cheers in advance

Andy

im no pro detailer but i will tell you what i do/did

The snow foam i spray then do all the little bits while waiting for it to fall off the car, i wouldn't agitate it.

Iron x, once its doing its job it goes red, so i let it go red few more mins then washed it off. The instructions were very clear on the bottle and following those got me very good results. Oh btw, it stinks!

Not only does the actual product smell, but my driveway wreaked of rotten eggs mixed with sulphur for 4 weeks after I last used ironx. If I use it again, I'll drive my car on to the road an apply/rinse it there instead.

As long as it needs it. I go for longer in colder/winter climes and shorter duration in summer. Do not let it dry on. Doesn't need to be agitated but some people use a washmitt and agitate the whole car and rinse. I prefer to snowfoam and then use a raceglaze-style brush to clean all the lines and creases, badges, grilles etc. These are areas where dirt tends to get trapped. Once I've been round the whole car, I then power rinse and move on to 2BM wash. This rinse is where most of the dirt gets lifted and is for me the longest part of washing the car. Thoroughly rinsing means less contamination.

I'm sure it tells you on the bottle but generally 5 mins max. As with all products, can cause damage if left to dry on.

I would test out the foam lance settings and mixture settings first. Play around with the lance until you get a foam thickness that works for you. You only need about an inch of snowfoam in the bottle. I top up with hot water as I find it helps the snowfoam to cling better.

Iron-x is fairly straightforward.

Well my box of swag arrived today. Tried giving the car a quick going over with the snow foam. I turned the dial all the way to +. But didn't really get anything like the amount of foam I was expecting. Now this is no doubt down to me so any pointers would be great. I'm using the elite lance along with their snow foam

Cheers

As I said, you have to adjust the settings. + means more air not more mixture. Also have to adjust the nozzle that the foam comes out of.

Thanks for your patience!!

I just assumed more '+' was more mixture. I'm going to do the wife's car at the weekend so I'll practise on hers

Don't forget Iron-X can also be used on your bodywork to great effect!

if you got the large bottle on your snow foam gun then I'd go with about an inch of product at the bottom then fill to 3/4's with warm water. Never fill to the top as I've found you get less/softer foam.

I put 1inch of snow foam and fill the remainder with water,

But the snow foam never seems to cling to the car, in no time it just runs off, no matter which setting and even if i add more than 1inch of snow foam,

Are different brands of snow foam better than others?

Yes. Autobrite magifoam seems to cling longer and more effective at cleaning.

So is the elite snow foam not a good one?

Elites is no worse than any of the others, just need to find the ratio that suits you and your requirements.

+1. Fiddle with the nozzle, the +/- tap, and concentration of snowfoam. That's three variables. You'll get a feel for what works for you.
