as above.
my parents have had the cost of a £285 tyre refunded by Leeds City Council so it definitely can be done. make yourself familiar with council's road maintenance policy. if you can prove that they've breached it, then they'll give you the cost of your tyres back.

I would take a picture of the pot hole and the damage of the tyres and then contact the council with a letter and pictures explaining the problem and the damage. You should get a letter(s) back with a cheque for two tyres.

oh yes i forgot to mention, take a photo of the pothole immediately.
Leeds City Council were pretty sharpish about filling the hole once a claim was made.

Make sure the photos have the time and date on, but also try to measure the full size of it with a tape measure on your photos, include the depth.
I got a friend to do a road bloack when i hit a pot hole to stop myself getting run over. Unfortunately for me the council filled in the hole the day after so they dismissed my claim, ended up with one trashed conti sport and BBS rc on my mk4 anni. :fighting: :fighting:
The council policy is to inspect every road a certain number of times and they should give you that info of when it was last inspected etc..
Good Luck :happy2:

I've made two successfull claims for tyres ruined due to potholes from the council in the past couple of years - it was a relatively painless process.
Simply get the form from them that you need to fill in and fill it in as thoroughly as possible. Also go and take pictures of the potholes(s) that caused the damage and also take pictures of the nearest bus stop or telephone pole etc. Something that they can identify to get the location accurately.
If the pot hole was on an unadopted road you may be out of luck but it's certainly worth claiming anyway just incase.
