Title: Fan Problem

Hi everyone

Im having a bit of trouble with the cooling fan on my mk5 golf 1.6 fsi.

I can do a five minuite journey and when i pull up at home my fan kicks in on full blast. It will then slow down and you think it has stopped. It then kicks back in seconds after and goes on full blast. It will keep repeating this sometimes upto half an hour.

I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem before and if it is a common problem.

Any help would be much appreciated. It is driving me up the wall.

Rob if yours has two fans check both work, if one has failed then the other will default to 100% to compensate
If not could also be an ambient temp sensor fault , check the fans first though

Think it is common - only one of the fans works in my GTI and has done since I bought it nearly 4 years ago... I had it looked into but it still does the job so it's not a problem unless you have an issue with the noise I guess  :happy2:

Hi Rob,

Had this issue on the Ed30 earlier this year. If memory serves, it was the smaller fan that had failed and is a common problem.

I have AA repair cover but the cost at a local VAG specialist was £244 inc VAT.

Yes only one fan is running atm. I presumed the other one didnt kick in because it wasnt that warm.

Id leave it but i think its affecting my battery as a few time the next time ive come to drive, it has struggled to start. Had to put the gas on to get it to cough up.

Had it in the garage and they said its not a mechanical fault and i need to see an auto electrician.

Can see this been expensive.

Poor starting is also a common problem lol, mine sometimes cranks for a good 2/3 seconds before it decides to start... It's fine though! Lol  :grin:

Had this issue on mine, when you have the ac on and/or the car is up to full operating temp both fans should run in tandem- that's what I was told by my local vw specialist. Cost me 65 for a set of fans from a 2010 Leon (same fans) , swapped them over to my cowling and job done

It can be done from the top at least on my tdi - just a case of removing 4 screws and the plug at the bottom
