Well basically im thinking of getting a new head unit so i can run an ipod and full control, been looking at several. Just wondering what other people are running, i dont really want to spend a total fortune as it will be standard speakers any way and i quite like the standard look, i wont be going for anything too crazy looking.
-
I'm looking at the Pioneer stuff....
F700bt or 900bt.... IF i decide to go with satnav....
If not, I'm looking at the Avic 4100 - about 1/2 the price......
No pics yet, as I haven't bought it !!!
Dan :)
-
here you go dan the 700bt

I just ordered one of these...
Almost identical (looks wise) to the RNS510, but with 'everything' built into one box....
Straight VW fitament too, no mods or shroud needed....

Mine should be here this week, and I'll give some more feedback then...
There is a supplier who supplies pretty much everyone on the above forum, and he also sells on ebay.
I got mine from him via ebay including the DTB-T and shipping for £375...
-
VERY interesting.... bl00dy good price too :surprised:
My BIG twitch with this unit is the sound output (call me fussy, but I have mega-high standards - kinda summit to do with my job ;) ) - functionality looks AMAZING for the price, so where have the corners been cut?
Seems you can also run TOmTom on it.......
I EAGERLY await your review :)
DAn
-
Will also be interested to see if the Ipod connection can be made on the rear of the unit. That's the ONLY thing that looks cr@p imho.
Da
-
Sound quality is said to be better than the standard VW unit, but you are right if you want 'the best' this may not fit the bill.
As for the IPOD connection, they are working on a rear connection at the moment, I agree, the from ipod connection is terrible, and the white cable you have to plug in is not aesthetically pleasing in the least!
However one new development is that it now has a USB in the rear, you can connect portable HD's and memory sticks.
It can run all Nav software that is for CE based system, but the best one seems to be IGO8 at the moment.
-
Interesting.
Well if the sound is better than the RCD300, I can always put in my uprated speakers and sub.
The ipod thing is the other thing, along with nav.
Haven't used IGO8, but I'm pretty happy with TomTOm on my Ipaq PDA with GPS....
Can't wait :)
Seems to good to be true - which usually means there's a catch!!!!
Dan
-
Does that mean one is in production at the moment to put the Ipod usb in the back? I really want a new stereo but want to be able to put the wire in the armrest or middle console/cupholder part,
Anyone used any of the ones that are for sale on e bay?
-
any news yet??? :jumping: :jumping: :jumping:
-
Yes arrived the other day... :jumpmove:
Not had time to install yet, and doubt i will for a week or 2..
However, here a little taster;
I have purchased an IPOD lead, to connect to the back also, the connector will be led to the glovebox along with the USB port.
I am waiting on an SMA extension cable to extend the DVB ariel to the glove also.

Build and Finish quality is excellent, Let just hope the electronic are as good once she's up and running.

Any Alpine head units?? Ive had Pioneer in the past and all of them have failed me.
-
now THAT looks great. :happy2:
Interesting thing is that by putting a standard usb/Ipod data cable onto that rear connection, you don't need to use the front at all....
Or that's my take on it......
Will have to look at the online manual later.
Thanks for the pics though - can't wait to see how you get on with it.
Dan

Just been re-reading this - looks even better!
Do you mind pm'ing the contact details etc?

Well yes and no...
I would like the functionality of the touch screen IPOD interface, therefore I will need to connect to the front IPOD connection...
However, with the USB you have the ability to plug in a portable HD or USB stick, you can have a huge amount of music movies exc on this - so you can possibly do away with the IPOD...

Just had an email back from Oskar -
"We are expecting more units in this week.
They will include the USB from the rear but there are no units yet (And I doubt there ever will be) with rear exit IPOD.
The USB Cable is not compatible with the IPOD interface.
The IPOD connection is compatible with Iphone and IPOD.
Our price including delivery to the UK is US$545.00 . (Via Paypal, Mastercard, Visa or Bank transfer)
We would send via parcelforce (EMS) to save shipping costs and taxes.
Cheers and best regards
Joe Hall (Oskar) "
This does change things slightly, although the price equates to £330 all in.
I need to see one in action now - not sure about the whole thing of front access Ipod. I've got a Touch, which I like to use. So the rear access isn't THAT important, but I don't know really.....
Will have to see what else is out there.
-
Humm this looks really good I'm quite interested too, could you please send me contact details. :-)

RNS510 looks interesting, but lookforward to your reivew
could it run Tomtom from SD card say?
I have a cheap double din before, but it didn't even come up with radio station name when tuned
-
My understanding is YES. TomTom will run of the card.

Think that is a downfall of this unit too...
Yes you can run any nav software that will run on a mobile device, its running windows CE.

My thoughts exactly mate,
I would love a rear input, one poking out of the front doesn't really appeal at all to me,
Until a rear one is sorted then I think I will have to hold out,
Thanks for the update though.

Well, I've had a good look, and I'm think I'm going to go for the Pioneer AVH-4100DVD (http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/products/25/109/281/AVH-P4100DVD/index.html). About £50 more than the Waywell, without satnav.
But sh1t-hot Ipod interface.

Running an F900BT myself, great headunit!

I know its not sat nav but i've got my phone for that, and DVD's are illegal to watch while driving!! LOL! but for me compared with the price of touch screens i think its a fair trade off and the actual functionality i think will serve better than touch screen. Think of the touch screen phones...as much as a I love my Omnia its way slower to search and send texts than a keypad...i think its probs the same with a headunit. Thats my paupers way of looking at it!
The fascia surround is from the stuff that is supplied by the Pioneer range as Alpine used Connect2 and that was horrible black non-rubber plastic.

Here's a few of my Kenwood DNX-7200 :happy2:

I have full bluetooth, full speed and functionality with IPOD, Hard-drive, DVD, and a park reverse camera with this package too. The sound processing is very clear and with the upgraded speakers, amp and sub it sounds excellent.
It has now been superceded by the DNX-7220
-
Still like your install Hurdy :happy2:
Has anybody tried this Waywell yet?
The RCD300 is doing my head in (I've done some more investigating - I don't think that the Golf speakers are THAT bad. It's he head unit that's sh1te. Mine distorts SO easily.)
Dan

Waywell..... Yes !!
I have had it up and running for the past 6 weeks and am very pleased with it..
It does pretty much everything... I doesn't do everything perfectly, but it tries !
Radio: Reasonable reception, tendency to try and re-tune itself too quickly, however setting can fix this, I'm about to install a twin fakra with diversity booster to make use of the factory twin antenna. Main niggle is that it only shows the station name when you listening to that station and saves that stations to memory as a frequency rather than a station name.
DVD: Works very well and plays most formats of avi, divX and Xvid etc.
TV: I have just upgraded to a better antenna, and am very impressed with the reception on the DVB-T digital.
USB: Excellent - I have a 32GB usb stick that I use to store loads of albums in MP3, music videos and movies.
SD slots: There is one that is sat nav dedicated and one that can be loaded with whatever you like, mp3, movies etc...
NAV: Excellent: this very much depends on the nav application you decide to use: I have gone for IGO8 with seems to be the application of choice for this unit... Works very well with the system and touch screen. I have also tried IGO amigo which seems to be good too...
Ipod interface: crap...not suited to the 160gb classic at all (Imagine it 'could' be better with a smaller pod) terrible white cable into the front of the unit... slow and buggie interface. I have my ipod plugged in via a component inputs in the back of the unit instead, these are lead into the glove box with the usb connection. I got a component to ipod connector cable off ebay for about £5. you can play movies ect off the ipod through the system too.
Bluetooth handsfree: Excellent (when you not moving) / When your moving, you can hear them but they can't hear you..- It is a good system, and a lot of people have solved its issues but changing out the mic with a better one. This is a mod i intend to do soon. Don't even think about trying to use the phonebook interface, its soooooo slow, and really not worth it... if like me all you want to be able to do is answer calls then its ideal..once the mic is upgraded... You can also stream music...
In summary, it does everything to a certain extent; as i said above, 'it doesn't do everything well.
If your in the market for satnav, AV entertainment unit then don't hold back, its excellent..
Just be prepared to have to work with it to get the most out of it..... but thats what I like about it...
you can also get a rear view wireless camera for it too, the cam mounts on the number plate light...
Hope this is helpfully, i'll try and get some pics etc of it in operation soon.,..

Nice.. I've ordered mine and being the gadget freak I've also ordered the rear camera and DVB-T - I ordered the twin fakra as I had read this can solve a few probs.. the only thing that worries me is the bluetooth side of things.. I had a parrot installed and it all works through my steering wheel very well I have mic mounted near to rear-view mirror - I guess when I install the waywell I'm going to lose that side of things I just hope that the unit will give me as 'good' quality as the parrot has.
I'm prob's going to upgrade the DVB-T aerial with a 96db one I saw on ebay.. which one did you go for? and where have you put it? - I really want mine to be hidden from view as I hate anything not looking OEM in my car

Perhaps a silly question Zub, but does it have a Pre-Out connection for integrating with ICE?
Also, does the RNS-510 have a Pre-Out?

Don't expect the bluetooth to be anything like the parrot with out some modification... I read the other day that you can hook up the parrot system.. http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74855&highlight=wd6050&page=170 (http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74855&highlight=wd6050&page=170)
I have that exact antenna (96db off ebay), seems to do the trick... but have my doubts it is actually 96db, it is identical in to this one which can be got for 20Euro's... there is nothing to say it is 96db... http://www.carlights.de/auto-dvb-t/auto-dvb-t-aktiv-antenne-cm-ant12v.html (http://www.carlights.de/auto-dvb-t/auto-dvb-t-aktiv-antenne-cm-ant12v.html)
As for hiding the antenna; the one in the link above fits perfectly in front of the rear view mirror, behind the black spotted patch on the windshield.. so you won't see it from inside or out. I'll post some pics.
Was thinking of getting the rear cam myself... There was an issue with some of the units, however there is a patch to correct that now...
"I hate anything not looking OEM in my car" - Me too :happy2:

It'll be great to see some pics mate . I ordered the camera but well have no idea whether I will use it or not. I'm still in two minds as to whether I should try install this whole thing - cos I'm a numpty when it comes to this sort of stuff - I looked at the Parrot installation link you gave me but man it's probs very simple but i'd be scuppered trying to do that - so probably going to need some help on that one later down the line (anyone Yorkshire area help?!) :happy2:
Going back to the aerial, I think I would try to hide it inside the dash somewhere unless it makes the recption terrible which it probably will, hmm I will see you pics and decide
-
The WD6050 does have composite inputs and outputs, also outputs for 2 x external monitors and inputs for aux video and a reversing camera.
Don't know about the 510 ... sorry..

Finally got that antenna all hooked up today; better than the standard one, but still have to be close to the transmitter to get 70 odd freeview channels... at my house i only got 4
As for hiding the antenna in the dash, i really don't think that will work...
I'll get some pics up soon,

Installed the FAKRA (twin with diversity) and wow... what a difference..
Easy to install; I put a 5A fuse in there on the blue wire coming from the WD6050 which powers the FAKRA.
Found it here... for £10... and I paid £20 for mine..
http://www.dealsonice.net/DUAL-FAKRA-WITH-DIVERSITY-TO-M_ANDHB.aspx (http://www.dealsonice.net/DUAL-FAKRA-WITH-DIVERSITY-TO-M_ANDHB.aspx)
A highly recomended upgrade...
-
I ordered my fakra at samee time of ordering head unit with Oskar (Joe) think he said $25 so we both lost out a little on price think it works out around £15 quid for moi!
-
Okay..my waywell unit arrived today quite overwhelming the amount of cables to be installing - I might need some help on this!! :happy2:

Zub,
How did you connect a USB device to the W6050 as it doesn't appear to have a raw USB connection?
Ta,
Pete.
