The GTI has been replaced :sad1:
A friend of mine now owns it so it's gone to a decent home which was more than nice to have as an option.
It was more than a headache to find anything that could replace the Golf for performance, spec, comfort, refinement and running costs. Ultimately that big a headache, that the answer was more or less another Golf! :drinking:
Looking at a property means the fuel bills had to be cut so this is it's replacement - a posh Golf:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv394%2Frdfcpete%2FIMG_20120816_151750.jpg&hash=ff216efcf82492844720e4082b99173a9c839f47)
It's a 2010 A3 Black Edition 170 TDI 3 door. It's my first ever diesel - very happy with it. Averaging between 49 and 57mpg at the moment with trip resets so it's serving the one of the key purposes I was looking for. It's low mileage and came up at a good price and paid below asking.
It's factory Black Edition spec. As with the GTI and my previous cars, it'll be an OEM+ bus and have some neat subtle touches.
Already done:
- Xenon H11 Fog light bulbs
- Xtec LED number plate lights *although had a few problems with these, nearly there
- Rear de-badge
- VCDS tweaks such as cornering lights, coming home adaptations and comfort windows
Plans are along the lines of:
- Coilovers & 4 wheel alignment
- LED RNS-E Nav
- Stage 1 remap of some sort
- Hawk HPS+ pads front and rear
- Pressed plates
- Black washer cap
- Paint the calipers Red or white
- OEM Footwell lights (LED)
- Sound proofing (for Bose speakers)
- Motol brake fluid
- Braided hoses
- BBS CK in a titanium grey
- Interior LED package
Later down the line:
- MY11 LED Tailights
- OEM S3 Mirror covers
- 19" Speedline/BBS split wheels in silver for the warmer months
Cheers.

Thanks mate. Those are a while off really, I think I'm going to sell the Turinis and ride on 18x8 CK's for a bit having been inspired by CK's for years. The Audi will pull them off in 18" from what I've seen whereas I felt they needed to be 19" to fill the arches and tyres on my MK5.

Nice looking car there pete! Health to enjoy :happy2:

Sell the Turini's :jumping:
You did see them on Toms S3 didn't you Pete?

I kinda know what you mean about the CK's….. but I think if I had Turini's AND CK's I'd have to keep both. End of. :innocent:
-
I know dude, you're not wrong. The appearance on Tom's S3 was part of the reason I bought them
For me, they only really work on the S3 (perhaps the bulkier bumpers and skirts help to pull it off) over the A3, but I think some grey CK's will work nicely. They'll probably be 18x8 too. I reckon the Turinis are likely to go and I'll use the RS4 BE 18's as winter wheels or similar
-
I'm in dire need of a set of Turini 18s...lovely wheels. Hint hint!

Remap is also high up the agenda.

Looking like next week dude. The rears will be a bit shy in the arches still but some BBS will put that right :happy2:

Very standard at the moment bear in mind. Totally an OEM+ WIP project hence the dirty car and amateur photography
With the AP's it'll be track low, which is what I'm aiming for. The good thing with the RS4's being 7.5J is that there shouldn't be any danger of rubbing.

Have - but, I'm not too worried as the RS4's won't be on for too long and the new wheels will fill the arches more healthily :happy2:
Well, coilies and air filter went on today. Going to wait for them to settle in then re-visit. Happy with the rear so far, front needs a bit more tapping with the lowering stick I think.
Work began:

Pics aren't great but you can see how some wider wheels would compliment the arches in a stronger fashion and also that there's more room for drop particularly the front, some at the rear. I'll look at this next weekend when they've had a week of driving.
Cheers.
-
I've got some lovely wheels mate that will fill those arches properly. (18x8.5J ET45)
They'd suit the Audi too.

Thanks anyway Carlo, but Bimoto's aren't for me on the BE :happy2: I've still got my Turini's sitting in boxes and they'd have gone straight on if I wanted a motorsport look again.
Set my heart on CK's. Looking at ordering before Christmas I think.

Pete car is coming on well, sitting nice now too :happy2: How does the drive feel

Pete car is coming on well, sitting nice now too :happy2: How does the drive feel
Thanks Neil :happy2: Feels very nice to drive, the steering isn't quite as light now but we're talking margins over 4,000 miles of use.
I'd argue it handles better than my GTI did out the box and you can turn in even more confidently now with the coilovers on and it's only running Hankooks at the front, ContiSport2's rear.
I'm hoping a map will straighten the torque curve a bit which is the next thing I'm looking at... Having the power in one lump is fine but if the lump can be prolonged a bit, it'll be useful.
-
Looking good... Where did you get the coilovers pete, i'm trying to source my good womans younger sister a set, for a mk2 leon :happy2:

Going to adjust the stance slightly at the weekend, but getting there.

Has Carlo (Monte) logged onto your account Neil?!
You've both mentioned the spacers, which while they'd make sense with the BE RS4's, I'll pass on as I'll wait to get some new wheels which will be 18x8 or bigger with a more suitable offset :happy2:

The wheels Carlo posted are MTM Bimoto's in silver.

Well we do both have great taste in our cars being in the fastest colour of Reflex Silver
Great minds think alike :jumping:

.....Those wheels are 18" MTM Bimoto Reps, (like the earlier RS4's). They look real chunky and fill the arches nicely. Great offset. Awesome Audi Rims

Looks bob on, how are you finding the coilovers on a daily basis?
-
^ They're very practical Joe, ride isn't affected around town and it still handles (arguably) better than my GTI which I can still only put down to having a heavier lump up front. It impressed me on the standard springs in truth when pushed a little harder.

I know I aint been on the forum for a while but blooming heck!!!! You sold the Golf??
Still the A3 looks lovely fella :happy2: Looking forward to see what it looks like when youve finished :happy2:

Afraid so dude. I miss being on the TFSI hype :sad1: But the Audi is equally excellent and I'll get years of motoring out of it.
Thanks. I've had a lot of interest in the Turini's truth be told but I'll bear that in mind :happy2:

Hard as Nails
Love it Pete :congrats:
-
^ :happy2: Ta dude.
Nearly had it three months now. Few things I've noticed, none of which are huge issues, just part and parcel I suppose;
1) The car takes what feels like hours to warm up (compared with the GTI). Sometimes I can do 7 miles of NSL A road before it reaches midway on the water temp needle (90 degrees celcs IIRC). This isn't abnormal but just means I have to delay any turbo spooled blasts :indifferent: :driver:
2) If you're a lazy driver (like me) and you gear badly through town, you WILL find the turbo lag in second and third. In the Golf I'd get very comfortable and corner at 15mph in 3rd and it wasn't too much of a problem in that. Do it in the TDI A3 and you find yourself chugging or coasting with no boost when you should've changed down. It finds you out more as a bad town driver. I obviously need to improve my driving but just something I noticed :P
3) You get nowhere near as much courtesy, sympathy or politeness in an Audi  In the Golf, people would go out their way to let me out of junctions or slot into gaps with a flash. In the Audi, you get nothing. Yet more evidence that everyone loves a Golf
-

Pete. I need wheels. Help.
Text/ring me later dude. May have a solution.

Couple of new bits, mainly to improve braking anyway and also to cope with the imminent stage 1 map that will be coming very soon.
OEM pads on the TDI Audi's appear to be a fair bit of pedal travel, then very sudden bite about halfway down where you almost get a lot of sharp clamp all of a sudden. I'm hoping the HPS pads will give slightly more progressive braking with the Motul fluid too. I had Hawk pads on the GTI and they were excellent alongside ContiSport 3's too, to be fair.

Nice one Pete, looking well :happy2: your lights are looking nice and bright ...
How do find your new RNS-E works?
-
^ Ta Neil :happy2:
The LED DRL's are incredibly bright, I see a reflection of them in some places I go in the day.
The RNS-E is really good. It's not quite as dynamic as the RNS510 I had in the GTI, but it does all I need still so can't complain at all. It was also £150 or so cheaper than the 510'...

So it seems Andy. For £200 it's worth an experiment.
Good work with the Nankangs Pete. Did you just fit them to the front?
Cheers - I did tbh, going to trial with just the two this winter and see how I get on. There are two spots either end of my street where under a couple of feet of snow I continually got stuck with 0% traction due to the incline. With these, I'm expecting that to change, so they're fitted mainly to avoid getting stuck in the white stuff.

lol, I wish I'd never seen that before....
Been there, posted around on ASN, PM's, repair wires, time and effort... to unfortunately find out that only works on the pre 8P3 models.
No-ones cracked it on the MY09+ models yet so OEM auto lights, or nothing unfortunately.
-
it must be because you need to put the repair wire in a different pin. you're right that for the 8P3 the wiring is different, but if you know the pins you can swap them over no bother. your best bet is to ask someone for the pin diagrams off ELSA of the plugs to the headlight switch. once you know that it should be pretty straight forward. compare the two and instead of putting it in pin 12 like the diagram, put it in the new pin - that is of course unless the new CECM doesn't allow it at all.

Argh, you're building encouragement again Sub, stop it
TBH it's very unlikely the Control module would allow it as it seems pretty restricted compared with the 8P2 BCM that I've interacted with, but that's guessing.
I've got the enthusiasm, the time and the budget to try it - just not the skill or experience in terms of electronics
Is the pin diagram going to shed any light at all?
-
i think the CECM will be the problem more than the pin... sadly the post-facelift CECMs i have little knowledge of
-

Hmm. Who's best to speak to?
I've got VCDS and I'm reasonably good with it, happy to try different bits out in there if of course VCDS coding will allow the BCM to support the rewiring(?)
The CHome and LHome values can even be enabled and set in my DIS alongside VCDS too, so the coding side shouldn't be as big a challenge perhaps?
-
if you're a member of Audi Sport there's a Scottish chap called Phil who facelifted a prefacelift S3. this makes him pretty much an expert at 8P electronics (he did all the work himself). i know on VAGOC his user is Phil, but i think it might be P5 SND on Audi-Sport. ask him and tell him i sent you!

Of course fella - did you find out the expensive and frustrating way like me?! :drinking:
There's a few ways around it. You can use OEM LED Audi A5 bulb units like I did, but to avoid the error you need some additional Kufatec wiring which I CBA with tbh. Unnecessary in my eyes. They look great but are very bright (like mine). There's a thread or two on ASN if you want more info.
These are what I've got, £26 all in. Bear in mind though that ones just blown for me and the seller has agreed to replace the faulty unit (after about three weeks of successful use). You also have to bend the pins on the units that make contact with the light circuit receivers in the plate light moulds on the car ever so slightly, so they're not quite OEM replicas. On the other hand, they look great (perhaps too bright) but very white, with no DIS error.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370574167997?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
You could also get some white standard fit non LED bulbs (which at this very minute I've got in, as a back up to the LED ones) but they're nowhere near as bright and give off quite a blue light. Lot cheaper though and easy to fit in your OEM bulb housings.
Those ones are these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/230552426951?item=230552426951&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160&vxp=mtr
I think I've probably spent about £300 on different bulbs between the MK5 and A3 over the years - fun and games
What model/year is your A3 out of interest?
HTH :happy2:

Been looking at Recaro options including TTRS and RS3 seats, although they don't come up every day and will be well in excess of £2k.
Therefore, I've been eyeing up something like this:

Nothing wrong with the current seats either, do like them. Be nice to have something with the bucket feel again, bit more like the GTI had

CS's are nice but you'll pay around the same money for some oem buckets. I know which I'd rather have :D

I found a half leather set for around £750, which would be the preference as half leather is what I've got now and I'm not a big fan of 100% leather seats.

Do these fit straight into the A3, or are modifications needed do you happen to know Daleek?

Had some fun with weather induced oversteer with the SV2 winter tyres on the front. They really are excellent and allow you to correct most stuff anyone could get wrong around town in these conditions. Possibly the best £200 I've spent in one go.

Found out last night you get free launch control in the later VAG diesels with the 6MT gearbox, where the car restricts the revs to no more than 2500k when sat at 0 MPH, which is great for quick starts. So you can sit, clutch down, 1st gear, foot flat and release the clutch when you're ready
It's literally nearly identical to the DSG LC function, so I did a few nippy starts before the temperature was below 0 celcius and it actually worked quite nicely as the winter tyres searched for grip.
Pretty impressed with that
5 months later, another cool feature. Hopefully there shall be more...

I found this out when my car was at Shark being mapped last year. I haven't actually tried it as a launch control though. Might have to give it a go. I take it it works only when you have your foot on the clutch?
-
^^ Yeah sorry fella I wasn't 100% clear but indeed, clutch down, 1st gear engaged and you can sit foot flat and lift the clutch when you're ready.
I'm assuming it's an ECU engine protection thing, makes sense to me but also has that added advantage for launch. I may end up using it very often now
One of the bosses 4.2FSI R8 Spyders' at work does this but up to 4.5k revs if I remember in all gears, until the ECU judges the engine to be warm. When he took me out in it he was driving it hard from cold and I thought his gear changes were awful :signLOL:, but he explained it bounces you back from the rev limit (around 4.5k, I forget now...) so you can't hammer the cold engine to point of instant damage.

Only just seen this thread Pete! Very nice car. Loving all the updates!! :happy2:

Been debating S3 front & rear bumper, with Votex skirts. I'll bypass the OEM S3 skirts are they come with S3 badged sills and I don't want it badged as an S3 anywhere, for several obvious reasons.
I CBA to go through the hassle of removing the current bits and spraying/fitting, although at the back of my mind I know it'd look great in black with some new wheels.
Meanwhile, I'm 2 weeks away from a visit to Revo and committing to a BBS purchase as a birthday treat to myself :pomppomp:  :jumping:
-
Lowered the rear a few notches, been investigating OEM and non Audi cup holders too (don't expect any easy solution if you drive an Audi).

Bought a Mini R56 OEM ash tray which I'll mod and chop to act as a capable second cup holder, which I need. Unless you drink Redbull all day, that second cup holder (left side) is pointless.

Lovely car, seen a couple of these the past week in London and look very stealthy in Black. Work colleague got an A4 not so long ago...in black  Where did you get the S-Line mats from? Stealers?
-
Thanks  I do like the stealth look, which comes for free on the Black Edition.
Matts were from eBay, don't think they're genuine but the OEM ones didn't come with an emblem on - just red trim.
-
More to come, but for now, some PilotSport 2's. Not the easiest to always find in 225 40 18 and 92Y

That is stunning mate. It's exactly what I'm looking for so if u fancy a golf again let me kno haha
Good job so far
-
Thanks fella :happy2:
Found one yet? They can be had for good money, just check the spec as there's some things that base model Golfs have that Audi skimp on even though it's the top trim level :fighting: Comes with the important bits though, don't get me wrong.
No more golfs unless it's a CW Edition 30 3door with DSG and Xenons which is the only second car I could possibly accommodate
-
I love it more everytime I see you car Pete!!!
Looks Soooo much better than the Sportback TDi Quattro I had :happy2:
Hard as nails

I'm still inspired by your BBS CK set every time I see them.
Few more plans and I've toyed with S3 bumpers but not sure in reality how different it'll make them look to the untrained eye. Some S3 skirts might be all that's needed.

Been an expensive but productive and cool week.
These came in the week and will be done in another colour over the next few days:

Powers much more usable now and smoother across the gears, which is exactly what I was looking for. Going looking for stock MK6 GTI's very soon...
A hassle free remap and would certainly recommend Alex :drinking:
Cheers.

What sort of power is it running now? I'm guessing yours will have the same engine as the Octavia VRS I've just bought :happy2:

Yep, that's the one Dan. Your MK5 TDI gone now I assume? :happy2:
Anywhere between 206-218hp I'd expect. I've seen outputs between that sort of range online and around the forums. The Pipercross PF should help slightly too.

Next up;
Mini detail needed and to get the new wheels on.
Light sensor retrofit due next weekend so I can use the leaving home/coming home functionality.
McGard bolts and wheels to be fitted.
Cheers.

I'd recommend Alex @ AKS for stage 1 certainly. 25 minutes from us and the car drives very nicely, powers a lot more usable

Not a tremendous update, but new RNS-E disc ordered as I'm getting read errors with the copied/back up one I've been using after 6 months.
A DVD lens clean hasn't sorted it so a genuine 2013 maps disc is on it's way, which is a year newer than I'd run previously anyway.
Turns out I learnt on the RNS-E that the DVD drive does nothing more than read the Map DVD's out the box (apparently). Makes me respect the RNS510 even more...
I've all the wiring in place for auto lights except the auto headlight switch which is coming soon. The dusk sensor is in place so I'll now be able to the coming home and leaving home lights I've wanted for a while. 90% there
Wheels are due very soon, bit of a delay in getting the right colour done over in Milton Keynes
Once they're on, I'll balance out the coilovers slightly. Rear's a bit shy, fronts about right.
Next in line will be an OEM optics grille (S3) and likely to be a 2011 set of rear lights when I fancy a freshen up.
Few pics in boredom while I wait for the new 18x8's:

BBS should be here this week, might not be fitted until after my Nurburgring trip.
Auto light retrofit install to finish - A rain sensor and wiring kit away. Auto light sensor, wiring and VCDS controls are already in place. Unfortunately I found out the expensive way that the Leaving home and Coming home lights DO require light & rain sensor. I was hoping to fluke it. The auto lights function does actually work without the rain sensor, but you'd have to live with a massive DIS error stating that it can't find the rain sensor. Nearly there :happy2:
Stance will be adjusted a tad so it's a bit more level, the rear will be sitting a bit flatter.
Oil change, panel filter and fuel filter replaced today so it's a fresher.
BBS pics to come soon I hope.
-
Well they're here, colours spot on. Couldn't get the matte lacquer finish I originally requested, however they've come out well IMO with a gloss lacquer so I'm sort of glad with the result even though they took a while. Worth the wait so far. That residue is the poorboys natty blue where it's flaked a bit and I've done a fathanded job :chicken:. To be fair there are hardly any imperfections

Car looks great. I've just got one myself and I'm blown away by it. Had the rns-e fitted last week and love it.
I too miss the auto lights and wipers, bit too steep the cost of getting them fitted though
-
Cheers.
The RNS-E is a cool bit of kit, very different show to the RNS510 which I was a fan of.
I've retfrofitted the auto light sensor (but I need the rain sensor too) so after parts and fitting, I'll be about £550 deep unfortunately. Steep but I don't mind in truth, as I miss the leaving home lights more than anything. From that I'll only have auto lights too, which is fine - you can't do the Auto dip mirror or working rain sensor kit without a new windscreen and I didn't wanna go anywhere near that  So I've done a half kit for what will be nearly the same price. Ah well... :stupid:
The coming home lights can be triggered manually as with a lot of VAG cars using the beam stalk as you open the drivers door.
-
I like the lights coming on when unlocking the car. Auto wipers I'm really missing though, especially as our other car has both. One of those things I'll get used to I suppose.
Any ideas of the reversing camera options? I know there is a very expensive official kit but there are apparently lots of other options but no clear info.

Not been near it on the Audi, only loose experience on the MK5 & MK6 I'm afraid. Worth some forum searching and googl'ing though I'm sure :happy2:

Stance has leveled out now which is an improvement, catching on the front wheel arch lining screw now though when turning at low speed and full lock :sad1:
Cheers
-
Had some arch liner screw issues so whipped them out and tucked the lining up best we could.
Looking smarter but filthy, but looking just as I wanted. Might get the matte finish done on the wheels at some point in the future but that's nit-picking. Finally some tyre lacquer too
The PS2's are excellent. I only had a pair on the rear I think from memory on the GTI at any one time, but I'd definitely buy them again after several recommendations from people who track/road. Excellent tyres to live with alongside the solid grip in wet or dry.
Cheers.

Looks awesome Pete!
You got to be well pleased with it mate. :happy2:
Have you got S3 front brakes on there?
(I'll be selling mine beginning on Nov)

This is really nice! Great job mate :happy2:
One question, how different is your front bumper to an s3 front? Probably a stupid question but may as well ask

This is one of the nicest A3 I think I've ever seen. Love it. Top results all work great together.

Thanks dude! :happy2:
Nope, just the standard 'S-Line/Black Edition' ones. Same size as the MK5 GTI I think (312mm?) but without the red paint which I would've preferred tbh. The hubs need some attention too, they look scruffy for a 3 year old car :chicken:
What's coming in it's place?! :surprised: You'll have to drop some clues on your thread lol...
-

Cheers George
In short, the S3 bumper is chunkier and sits what looks like a little lower, not sure if in metrics it is actually lower but I expect so. The S-Line/Black Edition bumper which I've got is marginally slimmer in appearance, whereas the S3 gives the impression the arches are wider to the observing eye.
I'm going to fit the S3 Black Edition grill (fully debadged of course) which look great on the TDI Black Edition 3 doors, not many people have done it either :happy2:
-
Managed to bag a bargain on an S3 grille, it's hopefully on it's way. Will do some bits to it then it'll be ready.
These arrived in the week, OEM chrome S-Line/Black Edition fog light surrounds with matte grille finish :happy2:

Booked in a rain sensor retrofit completion (last bit of the jigsaw) so I'll have full auto light install, minus adaptive wipers and minus the auto dimming mirror.
Means I'll have the auto lights adaptation and leaving home/coming home lights which is what the pursuit of the retrofit was all about. Costly, but worth it IMO. I'll do a leaving home vid when it's all hooked up.
On a rewarding note, the Pilot Sport PS2's are better than I remember. It's very hard to make them look foolish when really trying and they don't tyre squeal at cornering speeds where the Hankook V12 Evos' were sounding pretty much murdered. I'll find it pretty hard not to buy Pilot Sports again
-
Winter tyres are back on.
Nowhere near as good as the PilotSports for now, but come the severe weather I won't say that so easily based on last years experience :happy2:
Small makeover for the rear.

Full adaptive Auto lights and leaving home/coming home lights enabled. Very happy with this one, given the research, time and investment in it :scared:

Nice audi mate!

Looking very smart and stealth !

So subtle, that only a 'Versus' style pic on these two Phantom black S3's can highlight the difference.
The illuminated areas are identical so no gain there, just simply darker and gives the 2011 + look.

OEM cruise control retrofit, from one of the very helpful guys on Audi-Sport.net :happy2: Circa £150.

Suspensions been tweaked yet again and I've changed the rear cups to get rid of a small noise at the rear. Seems more balanced now which is a result.
I think I'm about finished now
Cheers.

Car is looking fantastic Pete, I've got a very bog standard Sportback tdi 170 Quattro and this thread has given me the urge to part with a lot of cash! I've found it a bit of surprise at just how little spec you get as standard on the audi compared to my old Ed 30, especially as mine is the sport spec which comes with next to nothing.
-
Thanks Grant :happy2:
You're right - it's a little baffling, perhaps a marketing ploy? But to me on the surface, it makes no sense given Audi is the 'premium' badge of the VAG group.
The auto headlights thing really f*cked me off. Even the Transit Combi at work has auto lights, yet a 25 grand Audi in top trim doesn't? Nor does the S3 for that matter, you have to spec the lighting pack.
The Audi's doing everything right ATM but I keep finding myself looking at 330d's in the classifieds. The kit on those in M Sport makes even the equivalent A5 look under-dressed and the idea of a coupe and an inline 6 (plus 240hp out the box) really appeals to me. I keep forgetting they don't make them anymore too... I just hope I could run one getting close to 50mpg most of the time, although I'm not convinced which puts me off. I just want the challenge of running one as a daily that's mapped, decatted yet is no more expensive than the Audi to run... I do like a car marathon challenge :rolleye:
You bought the right engine in yours, sounds good. Have you managed to break traction in the frostier conditions yet?
-
What type of driving do you do? I've got an 07 530d m sport touring as the family car, spec is much better although mine doesn't have xenons though I'm sure a 330d coupe has them as standard. Mine is an auto and obviously a lot bigger than the coupe but my experience is an easy 40mpg on the motorway but can go as low as 31mpg doing town/short journeys. Mine is the auto so that probably has a negative effect as well. I suspect that a 330d coupe wouldn't be far off 50mpg with a map on the motorway. My dad had an a5 3.0tdi and the average was about 42mpg
The weather up in Scotland has been too mild to even test the Quattro so far!

That's decent info. It would be the auto I'd want TBH :happy2: I've been in a 2009 325d cab with the single clutch paddle box, and thought it was perfectly adequate tbh. Does yours have the paddles too?
You're right, all E92 coupes had Xenons :happy2:
Is the 5 series on runflats?
The Audi's great and is low cost to run, but everyone has a 'next car' itch. The plan is to keep this for a long time and wait till the new 430D series fall under £17k one day in about 2020, but if I can chop it for a 'new as possible' 330d coupe then the temptation will always be there. Stage 2 map, decat down pipe and some VMR rims would follow.
I hope when the snow comes you're smiling with the Haldex :driver:
-
Mine doesn't have paddles, from what I've seen there are two types of auto in the 5 series, mine is the one with longer thinner gear stick, the shorter gear stick seems to go with the paddles. It still has run flats, I bought it in March and they were practically brand new so I've just learned to live with them. They do give a pretty firm ride but my wife drives it most of the time so it gives a bit of peace of mind that she won't be stranded with a puncture
-
Fair enough pal :happy2:
What's the 2007 30d engine like to drive, do you enjoy it?
If I got one just for my use, I'd definitely ditch the RF's given their weight & ride, but that is me being a bit fussy in some ways.
I've been youtubing too much and have got the sound of different exhausts and tuning on them ringing around the ears - keeps enticing me towards that engine in a 3'er...
-
Love the S3 grill Pete
-
The 3.0d is a great engine, really smooth, great turn of pace and even a decent noise considering its diesel. It must be rapid in a 3 series. I would definitely recommend it
-
Just when you think you're done and I start thinking about houses and a 4 series in a few years, this little list of requirements is written.
- Calipers done in GTI red and paint the hubs black, they need a lick of paint or two
- 6MT Short shift kit
- Tracking needs aligning
- Wrap the splitter centre piece in silver
- OEM RS3 grille at some point
- Get a genuine set of RS4s in 18x8J as the second/original set of wheels for the car, to replace the OEM RS4 'style' 18x7.5J ones the 2010 black editions came on
- Stage 2+ with Darkside Dev downpipe via Alex @ AKS. Not decided whether to go full exhaust or downpipe only yet, need a run through of the gains
Phase 1 is definitely finished. Need to get round to phase 2 by this time next year.

I WILL catch you one day at Alex's gaff... :drinking:

Been dying to recently establish just how quick the torque makes a Revo stage 1 CR 170 so that I had a proper benchmark. Had a sprint with a good mates MY06 engine standard A3 2.0 TFSI (k03) in some twisties where actually, I'd say into the corners and out, I was sharper with the torque and began to pull away before silly speeds.
Also, managed to catch my mate with a 2005 40k miles Leon Cupra R 225 with the BAM engine at the right time. He's got Pirelli P Zero Rosso's all round but engine standard. Through 3rd, 4th and 5th, there was absolutely nothing in it. At motorway speeds, we were very evenly matched. On the second run I managed to pullaway slightly in 5th heading for 6th, but the margins were quite tight and I sustained a few lengths ahead which I'm really pleased with.
It was at the end of the day a car I bought to bring my motoring costs down, which it has :happy2: It does 60+mpg on reasonable runs without too much effort and 600 miles to a tank in summer. Still dead chuffed, particularly in real world driving conditions to match a standard Mk1 Leon Cupra R and be no doubt quicker than a standard k03 2.0TFSI A3 is certainly a welcome bonus.
This proves that the Revo STG1 and Pilot Sport 2's are working really nicely.
-
Still going strong. I'll have had the car 2 years as of next week and I can honestly say it's the affordable performance/economy balance I was looking for.
It's pennies to run compared to my MK5 GTI all told. It drove really well at Bedford Autodrome weekend before last, very impressed with it and the XDS electronic diff worked well actually - I didn't think it be as effective as it was. Pics from that to come :happy2:

Ta guv' :happy2:
Were you happy with yours on track? I was pleasantly surprised in mine, I have to say. Everything worked out and performed for a daily.

TBH I was a little underwhelemed. I was running my road tyres at road pressures. I reckon the track temp ust have been 30+ degrees so I found them very soft and squirmy. Another thing I found was that as I was going off line to let the quicker stuff by, it would pick all the marbles up. So for the next half a lap or so it sounded like I had a wheel bearing gone haha.
Maybe with some dedicated track tyres this wouldn't be an issue. I did enjoy it though. I have been a passenger may times around Donington and have done a few bike track days but this was my first time driving it myself.

Interesting. Perhaps you (and the car) did better than you thought then?
I'm on essentially a MK5 chassis but just fast road pads F&R, coilovers and Pilot Sport PS2's. The tyres were absolutely excellent tbh although I expected that, as they've never let me down. The brakes coped well with only marginal fade once.
Even in the wet, the car felt very stable for a front engined FWD diesel. Perhaps the XDS did more than I thought in reality, traction control light wasn't on that much though.
I let a lot of stuff past too tbh, perhaps part of parcel when there's always going to be fast stuff around. By the last 5 or 6 laps though I was keeping some pretty committed Catherhams and a Seat Leon Cupra 225 behind me though for a few laps which I was chuffed with, having learnt the best route around by then of course.
I'd happily happily trust it on track again, as I'm sure you would yours?

Few updates recently, with a full Spring freshen up to come.
Buying a house next year but keep getting itchy feet and looking at e90 330d's, however I know I'll keep the BE for much longer deep down. S3 intercooler to come.

Also I completely forgot to measure the disc sizes   I assume they're 312mm like the MK5 GTI and look around the same size, but I could be completely wrong... :stupid:
-
I was hoping this update was the 'trinis :(
-
Ha.
Not again, yet. Some new bits though via Alex.
-
Still going strong.
A trip to Alex meant a new frock, some Revo tweaks and short shift kit in pub terms.
In real terms, this was:
- S3 front and rear bumpers fitted, something like I personally think it should've looked like from factory setting it aside from the ever regular S-Line's.
- Short shift kit with AKS bushes and side shift
- Cambelt & WP change
- Rear MY11 OEM TDI badge
- Original OEM Black Edition grille re-fitted, maintaining the whole 'TDI Special Edition' theme.
- S3 Intercooler due very soon
- More track days this year too.

Nice motor, Pete. Just read through the whole thread and amazed at how many mods it's had done. Also amazed that you had a set of Turinis in the shed and weren't impelled to try them on to see what they looked like!
I still have mine and are using them as winter wheels now.

Hi Pete
Was good to meet you at AKS last weekend. Just looked through your thread it's a lovely car :happy2:.
Hope I didn't distract Alex for too long and you got finished at a sensible time!
Enjoy the car! Might see you again some time!

Purely as they look a bit lost on the regular S-Line kit, but they suit the S3 image so perhaps I should've kept them you're right :scared:
What are you summer wheels these days?
Looking good Pete :happy2:
Thanks Dawain :happy2: Enjoying keeping tabs of yours on Insta!

That was a long old day for you boys wasn't it?! :signLOL:
No worries, we had a late finish and Alex got a Chinese over my neck of the woods but it was worth it, I can feel the improvements in all areas.
Yours is also very smart, did you get the brake wear all sorted? :happy2:
Yes fella, I'll be doing Rockingham and Bedford track days this summer although I guess that's a bit far for you too travel, is it not?
-
Long enough! Not going to make a habit of it that's for sure :signLOL:!
Good stuff glad you can feel the improvement looks wicked that's for sure .
Yea I will get it sorted makes total sense I probably got them REALLY hot when I started to notice the change in them. Going to get the RS3 ducts and try again with new pads :driver:!
I want to go to Bedford some time but this year I'm focusing on my Saywell charity days at goodwood :-). Next year will be better off financial wise and will throw a couple more in around the Saywell days :driver:

The ones that came with the car. I've not written all that much about it coz it's staying standard, but you can see it on the Turinis by clicking that bit under my name...

Ha. Did you stay out late on the beers?
Thanks fella :happy2:
Nice, what pads are you banking on?
Bedford is good fun, nice and open so you can push hard and there's little risk of hitting something in most cases if you get it wrong.
I guess Goodwood isn't too far from you in theory? :driver:

Just reminded myself you're in an LCR?! :happy2: They work a treat on the grey paintwork. I suppose they are an ideal winter wheel.

No R, please, they don't make those anymore (yet?)

LC, sorry! Happy with it all in all?
They're super rare around here, gets my vote on the Turinis :happy2:
...should you decide to sell

I wasn't, but it's a lot better since adding some new tyres to the mix. The OEM Bridgestones were rubbish, but I've stuck some Michelin PSS on the front and all is dandy with the traction now. The LED headlights are a bit pants, though!

The tyres alone, transformed it? Must've been more to it than that?
What's it like on track?
I'm not convinced by LED headlights a technology, yet. Xenons seem to be hard to replace as all round achievers. LED's, even fitted to expensive branded models, just look like some very white Halfords £12 bulbs - no road presence like crisp Bi-Xenons have for me, anyway...
-
As it feels like a new car and looks like a new'ish one compared with before, I'm a bit snap happy.

Looks fantastic mate, super clean. :congrats:
-
Lol actually yes I had a party to go to in the evening so I was flat out on the beers! Got home at 2.30 absolutely nakered and was so pleased to see my bed haha!
Not sure on pads yet hopefully the pagid blues will be ok if I keep them cooler and don't do 4 consecutive sessions lol otherwise I'll take alexs advice and maybe try pagid yellows but I will try blues once more with additional cooling!
Bedford appeals to me nice and big with plenty of run off... next year probably got to try and recover funds this year.
Goodwood is nice it's only 45 mins and it's a nice fast track but you must not get it wrong but awesome when you get it right!

Looks great Pete :happy2:

Haha, hardcore you know the score... :drinking: :drinking: :drinking: :drinking: :drinking:
Alex recommends Textile pads, you given then a bash at all? Might be my next purchase, especially as I've got a bit of front squeeling :ashamed:
Yeah Bedford is excellent, I'll probably be there next month.
July hopefully I'll do Rockingham which looks decent and again, only up the road from me. Be rude not to...

If you're at Rockingham beyond Oct (bit late in the season, I know) then give me a shout dude

Will do MichaelAngelo!
You back early Oct onwards, then?
Bedford is easier for me that time of year but I can do both in theory early autumn :happy2: @Tfsi_Mike (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=293)

I didn't feel very hardcore at 2.30am haha!
Alex said I could step up to pagid rs 29 will try that next. Gonna get the cooling sorted 1st though and try blues again.
Bedford defo is on the list what circuit do you recommend? Never thought of Rockingham to be honest is it good then?

Mike @Tfsi_Mike (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=293) does more track days than me so he's better to ask, but I enjoy Bedford because it's so open and flows nicely. It's a fairly fast lap and braking points are fairly comfortable, so you can push on.
Rockingham is cool for different reasons, depends which track they have out but it can be more technical and enjoyable all the same, bit harder on the brakes over a session I guess.
Both are 20 minutes from me so I'm easy going TBF.

Working on improving top speed ATM with some vmax runs. S3 IC to come shortly. Not that it'll give massive gains, but worth it none the less.

Proper sprint with a 525d has reminded me it's actually okay performance wise this thing, but want to improve low end and top end a bit.
Still waiting for an S3 IC from a member once his Peron arrives and needs some Textar pads at the front, got some real squeaking going on.
If anyone wants to retrofit a Cayman GTS manual box to my car, I can pay in body organs and cups of tea - the manual box is so notchy and blippy' when around town during soft changes that it's almost worth changing gear hard every-single-time :fighting: :fighting: :fighting:
