Title: Black Hazard Switch Buttons
Post by: vRSAlex on August 25, 2012, 10:41:11 pm
Anyone fancy these instead of the red buttons?  Direct replacement.

Easy to fit? Any MOT implications?

I suspect it's a middle vents housing off to get the switch for a swapping over the covers.

Have seen the whole unit for sale in the past on an American site. Did not realise that the button could just be replaced. Does this part just clip onto the switch part?

Easy to fit? Any MOT implications?

Had not thought about the MOT question but now you mention it, the way they are heading with all their new rules, bound to be a problem. Maybe it has to be red  :confused:

So that's top section of centre vent removal... Are hazard lights switches allowed to colour other than red for MOT? I wouldnt like to hazard a guess... Lol might be an easy swap back though...

More info please Alex ;-)

I had to swap it out of my old grille housing and it was very fiddly.

Done some searching on the mot implications and it seems it won't cause any issues.  Doesn't look like its checked at mot.  They just check the indicators and the bulbs.

I can't say how easy they are to fit.  I'll give it a go on a Golf I have in a the moment.  Prob do a guide if its a pain.

Can't imagine it would be to hard once the switch is out, if you need to take the switch out at all... probably would though...

How much we looking at Alex...?

Taking the switch out is easy as there's a little clip you push. You would then have to separate the red plastic cover.

This is the website I came across in the past where the whole unit is available. Would be better to just change the button part if possible as its obviously cheaper. Whole unit seems to be around £20 ish + postage.

They haven't worded it very well, but its just the button rather than the whole unit that they sell.  I can't sell them any less than the $30 they sell them for.  So around the £20 mark.

The button comes off the unit very easily so its a fast swap over.

I did think that if it was a black button like above then the triangles would have to be red and illuminate red to be ok

I'll have one please, had a black button on my last car and never had MOT problems?  :happy2:

There are a few cars on the market that don't come with red buttons as standard so I can't see it being an issue at mot.

I will take one of these. How much are they? Is there a sale thread?

This place does not mention anything about it having to be red:

Just looked up the leislation in relation to this and it says

(Regulations 18 and 20)
SCHEDULE 8
requirements relating to obligatory and optional hazard warning signal devices

Every hazard warning signal device shall–

(a) be operated by one switch;

(b) cause all the direction indicators with which a vehicle or a combination of vehicles is equipped to flash in phase;

(c) be provided with a circuit-closed tell-tale in the form of a flashing light which may operate in conjunction with any direction indicator tell-tale; and

(d) be able to function even if the device which controls the starting and stopping of the engine is in a position which makes it impossible to start the engine.

Don't know if the MOT regs are different but it seems we have the thumbs up from Her Madge it appears! Don't mention anything about the colour of it...  :happy2:

Just been out to fit mine  :happy2:

Took me about 5-10 mins to complete.

May take a little longer for the first time you remove the top part of the centre console. I'd advise using Steve's guide as I really couldn't illustrate it better - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,10027.0.html

Once the vent section is clear, simply remove the hazard switch and then separate the red triangle from the switch, replace with the black triangle and put it all back together.
