Title: I-Pad advice
Post by: gazbutS3 on August 26, 2012, 11:33:58 am
Ok people, the other half wants an I-pad but I know nothing about them. I see some have 3G connectivity, are they subject to a monthly subcription or pay as you go type thing? whats the the main differences between the various types 1,2,3 etc? where is the best place to buy? all help or advice greatly received   :happy2:

Comparison table.

3G connectivity requires a 3G enabled sim card and data plan. If your other half has an iPhone then they can be tethered, so you can use the 3G through that.

The third-generation iPad has a better screen, camera, and cellular connection

The 2 and 3 come with cellular, if you specify it. Its not 3 specific.

Online... just find the cheapest. Unless you want to customise the back of it with some text then buy direct from apple. I got one for my g/f and had her name and phone number etched into the back of it, looks cool!  :happy2:

One place worth a look is John Lewis as you get a 2 year warranty as standard.

+1. That's where I recently purchased one from. I bought some John Lewis vouchers off ebay, used them to pay for the ipad, saved almost £50 which isn't too bad.

I wasn't convinced by the 3G ones, there's WiFi everywhere these days and if I'm that desperate, I'll either use my phone or tether.

Oh, and you need this:

Star Wars Arcade:Falcon gunner - best £1.99 you'll spend in the app store. Set it to 360degree mode and find a swivel chair.

.
I've got the iPad 2 but not 3G. I didn't consider it worth the extra £100 for 3G and I don't have an iPhone or similar phone use contract (nor do I need one).

When I do travel with it there's plenty of WiFi either at friend's or friendly cafe's.

As with choosing any gear, it's a matter of realising how you would use it and buying accordingly. Hence my basic Nokia phone and use of iPad on a tripod with Apps I use.

4G...when is a tablet ever going to need more than the 7.2mbps 3g connectivity offers?

personally id get a ipad 2 with just wifi, you can get refurbished ones for £260 from apple, they come boxed and get new backs so look brand new + 12month warranty.

if your feeling flash get the new ipad but unless your going to be playing the games a lot personally i don't think its worth the extra cash.

4g is the next generation of 3G just faster speeds I think

The iPad 3 has 4g but it is not compatable with the frequency that 4g will be in the UK

100% agree  :happy2:

Had the IPad 1 and gave that to the missus when I upgraded to the 2.  Goto say the 1 is also impressive anyway.  I'm not going to upgrade from the 2 until the 4 comes out, all this upgrading every 5 minutes becomes expensive  :signLOL:
