Read the review for this in Car at lunch time, I am weakening a bit to its charms as next car.
I had set my sights on an RS3 but this is £10k cheaper, only about 0.3 seconds slower to 60 and 20bhp down. Plus probably sounds better and is more fun to drive? On the downside not sure am ready to leave the VAG family when the time comes as like the adjustability of parts between the brands.
Looks like it would murder a Golf R or Megane and is 145kg lighter than an RS3 :rolleye:

My thoughts exactly!
This car mapped will be 400 ish BHP and RWD which is much better then AWD considering fun factor... I think BMW is the one and only out there, truly performance machines I think and so pleasureable to drive.
I drove 320d recently and was astonished how well it handled out of the box, comparable to my highly tuned golf!

BMW parts swap too you know. Do some research on 1addicts.
Basic mods:
All the underpinnings to an M3 fit on a 135i, camber giving wishbones, better bushes, light weight stuff, ARBs... Add a diff from Birds and you've got a 1M.. Only for 20k less. St1 map = 380bhp and similar torque, easy 400s with downpipes and intercooler.
Ditching run flats and moving up to a 225 on the front does wonders. Any of the above is just M3 chasing.
Oh, and they're much faster than their book figures :happy2:
-
Oh, and contrary to forum myths and legends, they won't kill you in the wet either. 2:20s around Oulton in the rain bog stock except GY Asym2s, virtually as fast as my heavily modded MK5 was in the dry...

damn you to hell tony, and your informative replies, you are just whetting the appetite more
Interested to see what this A class AMG is like though too... but i guess it wont be sub 30k for base model will it...
-
Oh, you want a new shape one? They're even better straight out of the box than mine. Comes with Pilot SSports and a locking diff, so you're half way modded already.
I'm having one to replace this next year, unless seeing the lauch of the coupe makes me wait for the 235i instead.
-
yeah i need a 5 dr hatch so under consideration are RS3, M135i, A45 AMG.
I have officially stopped modding the ED30 now and have 2 years of saving ahead of me (although I might still get some BBS VZ and sell one of the sets of wheels I have)

Tony,
What's the difference between 135i new one and the one you have apart from shape and slightly higher power 320 as opposed to 306 bhp??

There is not much modding you can do?? Or maybe I am wrong :signLOL:

Mines the older twin turbo, as per the 1M - so forged internals, good for 5xx blah blah.
New motor is twin scroll single turbo, better on fuel and not capable of serious figures... Still handles 4xx no problems.

So much wrongness in this new naming convention!
-
Echo what Mike had already said... The new model is meant to be even more of a hoot to drive + £10k cheaper than it's competition and chucks out mpg figures that has diesel owners confussed..
Don't let the RS3's performance figures confuse you either. The M135i will be every bit as quick once up and running, but will be 10x more fun whilst doing it. It just doesn't come with AWD launch control like the it's 4 ringed competitor..
Mike - I never knew they came with SS rubber out the box?!?! It is becoming more and more appealing by the day tbh.. It just has the 'face that only a mother can love' looks to go with it unforunately. it is growing on me though..
My local dealer has one on order as a demo, so already booked in for the mandatory hoon..
-
I think they are the performance car bargain, don't get why anyone would buy any other 30k hot hatch tbh.
-
I keep wondering when they're going to realise it's too cheap - whilst VAG pricing is going through the roof, they're banging out RS3 eaters for GTI money, and driven by the correct wheels too!
-

well there is always more - VZ, Dave B 99T front brakes, TT hubs, WMI, Loba etc, etc

Yeah, crazy cheap, not getting many this year I was told. They will sell quick.

It's ugly  Had to say it but other than that yeah it will be a good car

Shut it you :booty:

It's no looker, but I've learnt to get over that!
Seems dealers are knocking anywhere between 8-10% off them too, so you can add pro-'Nav and some other essential bits for 'free'. Win.

By the time you've brought it upto RS3 spec it's nearer £35K (S-Tronic Sat/Nav Parking sensors etc all std on the RS3) and the RS3 will still sale by you come winter Is a lot of Car for the Money and will be more fun to drive than an RS3 but I think I still prefer mine:
-
i think i would need to drive both but certainly i think the AMG might be down in the pecking order as presumably it will be the most expensive of the three but similiar to performance to the RS3?
-
Biggest concern with buying a BMW at the moment would be to see if there've sorted the OBC theft issue yet: http://www.safer-neighbourhoods.co.uk/your-neighbourhood/stratford-district/watch-messages/22032012143329

I have one, only thing tempting me out of it is an M6. Standard car is great but once you ditch the runflats the suspension feels soft, so a nice Bilstein kit will sort that. Mine has:
Bilstein B12
Quaife LSD
Pagid RS29 pads
Catless downpipes
Stage 2 map (400hp / 408 ftlb)
In a straight line theres not much that copes with it except the M5/M6. I am yet to find the handling limit of the car as I run out of talent long before the chassis. I can drive this a LOT faster in the wet than my ED30 without any scary moments and the only issue on a recent trackday was oil temps.
-
Dave - How are you finding the IATs now you have DPs/Stage 2 software? Are you not bothering with a uprated FMIC?
-
Even the Subaru Imprezza WRX STI is £26,995, and the performance pack for a 340R is only an extra £1500. Subaru even do 3.9% finance for those that want PCP. Volkswagen Group need to take note.

I was reading about this on Evo this morning. Crazy value for money.

Why? VAG aren't struggling on sales like Subaru UK are, hence their recent reduction in price for the STI and offering tempting finance rates.
Don't see VAG needing to do anything really, they're in the sector of mass production. I'm not even sure if Renault makes much money from the RS models.

Just because they have the attitude of "Well, people still buy them, so we can charge what we like"
-
That's your own view though. Nothing to stop you buying non VAG.
But obviously millions of others don't mind their pricing strategy and hence they sell bucket loads!
Everyone has a choice at end of day and plenty of other brands out there for you to buy. New Hyundai Veloster Turbo S is out at £24k if you fancy that

Are you in the wrong thread? This discussion is about other manufacturer pricing compared to what you get with VAG for the same or in most cases, when you have to spend more money. No need to single me out with a bit of attitude? Other people are obviously going through the same through process, or Merc AMGs and BMWs wouldnt be considered by others.

I had no idea the 135i undercut the RS3 so much!!!
I loved the idea of the RS3, but considering ho good the 135i compared to it as well as the price, i dont think id even contemplate the RS3 at all.
I uess the only saving grace is the RS3 is bigger thus more space
Just looked at the 135i on autotrader, i didnt even know they had been out so long!! second hand bargain t b had there!
-
the 135i which Dave and Tony Danza have are not the ones I was considering as I say need a 5 dr hatch. if the RS3 has more leg room in the back and a bigger boot then, sad as it seems, things like that would influence my decision, as I am nearly 6 5 and not many people can sit behind me if they are over 5 foot and by the time I get a new car I will have one kid definately and two kids hopefully!
Anyway, back to my OP, regardless of whether the M135i turns out to be right for me personally it still is a great car for the money - I mean only £1500 more than a Astra VXR - Vauxhall, Ford etc are knackered if BMW can churn this out for not much more money than their inferior offerings :congrats:

Audi have usually targeted there RS models with the equivalent of BMWs M Cars so the 135 should really be compared with the S3 not the RS3 whereas the 1M although not available as a Hatch is a fairer comparison to the RS3

Someone on here can offer £8k discount on the GTC Coupe VXR (Astra). £20k for that, and its got proper 2 piece front discs!!!!

think there is a nice upgraded brake option for the M135i also.... not cheap though

True.. Just a shame it's sh*t slow, as it's looks are really growing on me..

I think it depends more on what is available on the market at the time tbh.. The 1M is no longer available as a new car and by the time the M135i hits the road, I very much doubt the RS3 will be either..
However - if the M135i is the same-ish size to the RS3, has the same power (give or take 10-15bhp) and similar performance... Why shouldn't they be compared?!?!
-

Not disagreeing with you just that Audi & BM marketing is usually based on RS is Audi's brand leader as M is BMW's The 135i is a new Model comparing with Audi's older model which if Audi had kept to it's word would no longer be available as only 500 were destine for the uk (same as 1M) but in typical manufactures greed they saw an opportunity to sell a few more so reopened the order books with another 250. Audi have launched the new A3 so they will be targeting 135i sales with the new S3 when announced which I'm sure will be nearer price and performance to the new 135i
-
The 2013 S3 is rumoured to have only 280bhp, so it will be 40bhp down (and 332 lb ft vs 252 lb ft) and no doubt weigh more.
-

Nope, the M-brakes are standard on the M135i - Brembos all round with 2 piece discs up front - just like mine :happy2:
£800 option on any other 1-series.
-
There was another rumour it was having the RS3 Engine like the next Golf R should have I left the BMW fold last year (M3) and had to justify having an TT-RS thought I'd have you all on my side in the VAG brand with my RS3 think I'll just shut up now :signLOL:

An even stronger case for the BMW it seems :happy2:

And have soggy handling.
-
Been looking at these and the e92 M3 and carnt decide between them. Its the fuel and M badge costs thats putting me off the M3. Is the M3 worth the extra costs???
Saw a vid on youtube with an M3 doing the ring BTG in 7:36 with just coilovers and no engine mods what so ever. With a few mods there good for 460hp and a good boost in the mid range, add to that some Nitron coilovers and a good geo setup and you have a gt3 killer there surely?
Same with the 135i but better on fuel and can be picked up for easy £20k and as said a few m3 mods and a map and some downpipes later you have another weapon in a completely different league to ed30 stage 2+ cars on the track.
-
Everything I've read about the E90 M3 suggests it is thirsty, has terrible range, and is only exciting at very big speeds. I love the look of them but an E46 CSL might be more fun, and more depreciation proof.

The csl is about as depreciation proof as you can get, just starting to look dated now. I know thats whats putting me off the M3 over the 1er but it will be mainly a weekend/track car, may even throw in a half cage if i get carried away and run it on semi slicks  :scared:

There is certainly no denying that.. Just depends whether or not you want to shell out best part of £30k for a 7-8 year toy.. E90/2 M3 is definitely more suited as a daily
-
A guy I work with has a 57-plate that he's put 105,000 (mainly motorway) miles on! I taunt him about how much he's probably spent on fuel, but in terms of reliability it has been bombproof.

Are they 6 pot stoppers on the front like ours on the new one Mike? As they look quite different and dare I say 4 pot-ish...

-
Aye 4s, look like big pots in there though.
-
Are they definitely 2 piece discs Mike?
-
In the high end BMW/Audi style - so an alloy bell and the floating disc held on by pins to allow expansion, but unlike a proper 2 piece, you throw the lot away when they're worn.
-
Ouch. So thats about £1k when they need replacing then?
-
No, £260 for a pair of genuine BMW ones in 340mm flavour. Grooved and drilled ones are about £80 more.
You can get caliper spacers to run E46 M3 CSL discs, or there's some proper 2 piece options available in the States. $499 from ECS, or $717 for the slightly better quality ones from HP Autowerks.
I'm yet to be convinced they need it, mine stops on its nose all day on track with nothing more than Pagid RS29s and RBF600.
The Yanks have gone nuts for the E82, there's serious amounts of mods out there and it's all quite cheap by comparison to VAG.
-
Thats quite ridiculously cheap.
-
Yup, you can buy the whole front brake kit brand new from BMW for a shade over £800. 6 pot calipers, grooved/drilled discs and pads.
I'll bet an RS3's calipers alone are more than that from Audi, makes you wonder eh!
-
And this is my point that was made earlier, why are Volkswagen Atkien Gesellschaft getting away with charging so much for these things. Im a massive VW fan, ive owned probably 20+ of them, but they have gotten seriously greedy in the last few years. If BMW can supply component options that cheap, it does make you wonder.
Chungster made a comment earlier about there being no shortgage of people prepared to pay the premium, but they shouldnt have to. These are not premium brands. Its meant to be the peoples car.
I was going to be tempted by the Polo R at the end of next year, but i bet it will be knocking on £25k with a few options. And it wont be as good as an Imprezza WRX STI. Bonkers!!
-
You wanna try Lotus for parts. It could make a statue cry. :signLOL: even the aftermarket goodies are so expensive. :sad1:
-
Lee made the point about there being no shortage of people willing to pay a premium for the car, I doubt any of them give a thought to spares. It's no wonder so many get written off for relatively light damage with the cost of parts.
Renault RS - leather Recaros £1300 option (also upgrades from cloth)
VW Golf R - leather Recaros £2215 option (leather is standard)
I think on the MK5 Recaros were about a £800 option?
-

Priced them up on trade, full kit is £704.

You can add another G to that Mike (when I was looking anyway).. Absolute piss take that the buckets in the .:R are £3250 when they are £1800 in the S3.. No wonder you see very few .:R's with that option ticked from the factory..
-
Ive just priced one of these up - They are a Performance bargain, compared with anything out there!!
My local dealer is getting one in for a demo...........my wifes fully loaded ED35 could well be up for sale soon!!

out of interest then, how much is the car you have specced after adding loads of options? Which options have you gone for. does look a steal compared to RS3
-
I think I got to £33500 with pro nav, adaptive suspension, HK sound and a few other bits, and I've been offered 10% off... Basically meaning my options are free. They're doing very low rate APR too.
-
The spec I had is just under £34k including the service pack. Most boxes ticked, but I have terms with BMW via my business. Im just awaiting a demo now.
However, ive brought my wifes Ed35(which it would replace) into work today for a valet, and it looks amazing..........plus I hardly drive it now!!

what APR are BMW offering at the minute?
-
I'm seriously looking at the 135i coupes... Never thought I'd sell my GTI but these are seriously tempting, especially when used prices are actually rather good... Or I could stage 2 my car... But I kind of fancy a change... But then I've only ever owned VWs... Oh decisions decisions!! :jumping:
