Hey peeps,
After some very helpful advice earlier I have removed my rear boot emblem with little fuss. The next thing I am going to do is wrap the badge in Gloss black Vinyl, on its way from Fleebay...
What is the best way to do this? (I am rubbish with anything DIY) Do I need to make slits where the gaps are in the VW so the vinyl goes around it, in between the spaces, or...? Any hits/tips/walk throughs guys? I am going to use a hair dryer, I assume that's right?!
Cheers

Hair dryer and a small sharp craft knife. ...and you will prevail :happy2:

Thanks!
Should I cut the Vinyl before or after I've melted it? And I take it I cut in between the VW and around it and wrap round?
-
Im doing exactly samething at the moment. I was going search best way how to do this, does the chrome on 3d rear badge come away?? would make it alot easier to wrapped with it off or do you have to wrap it intact?
-
If you have a 3D badge, it should just come away (the Silver VW sign) from the rest of it. I used a butter knife to prise it off, just tilt it 90 degrees, then slowly prise it off going round the edges, it has lots of clips that hold it in so they should just pop off mate...
Just need some more advice on the above chaps? :happy2:
-
Thanks mate :happy2: once the chrome badge off shouldnt have problem wrapping it mate,
im no pro but done my front badge and quite easy, misses hairdryer, plenty heat on it and sharp stanley knife!!!
-
Ok sweet, thanks, did you cut around the badge and on the inside of it after you melted it or before? do you wrap it round the back too or does it just stay put...
Nice one :happy2:

So it's off then Reece :signLOL:

Remove the backing from the vinyl, Place the vinyl over the badge and give it some heat, ideally at least 85 degrees but no idea what heat that is when using a hair dryer so until it's hot, stretch all around the emblem, until it's flat on the surfaces all over with no creases anywhere. Add heat to the front surface and press into the gaps. With a scalpel/very sharpe knife make some slits (not right up to the edges) and add heat and push around the edges all over.
During

Personnally, left about 1/2 cm all round and heated into place on the reverse to help stop shrinkage. Cut off excess and your done.

MC71, You're an absolute hero!
Thank you very much for your help! Can't wait for the Vinyl to arrive...
Once this is done I'll post some pics of my car, it was an ex showroom car, all the extras under the sun, the rearco sports seats drew me to the car! Just doing a few little mods, like this, interior lights, front badge etc...
Thanks for all your help
:happy2:

No worries, your welcome. Car sounds like a belter, get them pics up! :happy2:

Chaps,
After Michaels good walk through above, I tried to vinyl wrap my badge, and failed, terribly :signLOL:
Me being me, am shi*e with anything DIY... So... I decided to take the badge to a body shop (they seem quite a busy/reputable one at that) to spray it Gloss black, 3M it, prima, paint etc etc... They did not fill me with confidence as they said "We can't gaurentee painting anything chrome won't come off" so I said even after a week, if it comes off I'll be bringing it back! He said it shouldn't but couldnt gaurentee.
So a bit of advice if I may, have any of you experienced any peeling etc. of your rear back badge that's been painted black? I think the body shop were being over cautious but I just wanted your opinions please
cheers
:happy2:

^^^^ tis Martin (nothing wrong with Michael, just not me) :signLOL:
Alll hope is lost for the wrapping then. As long as they give it a good key (sand it), it will be fine and should not peel at all. I don't want to ask but how much are they going to charge you for this?
:happy2:
-
Martin! Sorry, it's been one of them mornings today!
Yeah you sure have a knack for it, I got all fustrated lol... Mine did not look hardly anything like yours.
If I was to say £35... What would you say... I gotta pick it up tomo so Will show you the end result... :happy2:
-
^^^^ I would say
All that matters is that your happy with the results! A fair few vinyl wrapping companies about, costs about £10-£20, or can get it dipped, costs about £20 ish. Body shops are not cheap for little jobs though.
:happy2:
-
I know a little :surprised: but... If I done it myself it would have ended in tears lol!
Right they called up and said it was ready! So here it is... (as asked gloss black, but seems to have a minute amount of glitter into match the paintwork!)
What'cha think??

or anthracite to break up the colours a bit...
Thoughts...?
:happy2:
