Hey,
Would adding an after market air filter (K&N) make much difference in performance/sound? Love the sound of the GTI, would it enhance this already amazing sounding engine?? If so how much do they set you back?

A panel filter will do little to nothing for the noise (I get a very slight amount of turbo whistle with mine).
For noise your best going for one of the following:
- EVOMS
- Twintake
etc. .
Use the search button as these all make different noises so its down to you to find a noise to your liking (theres plenty of videos on here) :happy2:

I thought panel filter's made the car sound a lot better after around 3500rpm?

The Panel filter on my Stage 1 GTI hasn't made much or any difference to the noise. Throttle response was marginally better though

Yeah to be fair, on my first car, my airbox was drilled, along with the air panel, so made a very nice noise after 3000-3500rpm.

IMHO if you REALLY want to add some extra soundtrack to your GT and I , I would say an ITG Maxogen Induction system (sounds like Darth Vadar, lots of whoosh dissssh goin on). Was a bit much for me as you can hear it in the cabin so sold mine and gone back to a panel filter. Don't bother with upgrading your OEM filter, no improvement and £40-£60. You will only get gains once stage 1+ ie with a TBE. Its only my opinion and many will differ regarding performance gains etc. Recent threads (with post from a forum member who is a tuner) have suggested little or no gain even with an induction kit below stage 2+.
Interesting tread re induction kit

When considering an air filter you also need to consider the effect it has on the engine. Intakes move the power higher up the rev range and can lose you low down torque, which is what we use 90% of driving. I had an intake and did not like the loss in lower torque so I refitted the engine cover and find it drives better. Intakes are good for noise and peak power. Also some intakes can cause scaling issues because the maf housing may be the correct scale. But turbulent air affects maf readings because the intakes are not fitted with a mesh filter screen to smooth out the air flow. So intakes can actually make the engine run worse to a point and feel very harsh to drive. I have a K&N panel filter and I have it as they flow very well and dont cause any maf oiling issues. That only happens when people over oil them after cleaning. If you want extra engine noise then I would fit aftermarket engine mounts. You can hear more induction and turbocharger noise etc

My bad, sorry! :ashamed:

No apology needed, I didn't mean to sound short if I did. :ashamed: As I like to say, the only silly question is the one not asked!
Check out Forge Motorsport for their Twintake, reviewed on the forum by RR (dated 2009)

Or the ITG Maxogen, reviewed by the Boss man (SteveP) (dated 2009)

Or the Volant system, new (ish) system from the US of A (dated 2012)

And an old thread about Panel Filters (dated 2009)

Very useful Info on all the above, via forum member john_o (dated 2009)

If anyone is looking for a k&n panel filter I'm selling one to suit Tfsi.
Compared to the price in the link mine at £18 delivered us a steal.
