Hi folks, I have just enquired at the dealers how much a 60k service would be and they have quoted me £754. This price includes timing belt/tensioner, water pump and the service including labour.
Is this a fair price? Thanks for input.
-
When I had my Cambelt/pump service done (3-4 months back) i was charged £499 but that included Aircon service and Brake fluid service but NOT the engine oil service (had that done in January for £249), If your paying them £754 tell them you want the brake fluid and aircon services for free if your "Bundling" they will discount, just tell them what you want to pay!, If I had done all at same time it would have been £748.
-
You would be off your head to pay that!!!
-
What are you going to get for your sevice? Are they just doing basic oil change or are they changing air filter, spark plugs etc aswell?
-
On the premise that VW charge £250 for a major service, that price is still high, tell them u cant afford all that and im sure they will lower it! Either that or use a reputable Independent Specialist and ive no doubt u cud get all that for £250-300 less!

The price is from a dealer based in Edinburgh. Any recommendations for garages up this way?
My friend said the danger with going to a private garage is that they may not use VW parts or might not even change the timing belt if the old one still looks ok. Not really sure what to do to be honest.

Sorry pal, don't know the Edinburgh area. You might find an Indy who specialises in VW or German cars... Can only ask if they use genuine parts or even buy the parts yourself, and ask them to fit?
-
Statllers in Sheffield (well recommended VW specialist): cam belt, water pump, tensioners, coolant & engine mount bolts (should be replaced with cam belt) for a grand total of £300 fitted. :notworthy:
Well worth a 2hr drive through the peak district :driver:

Personnally I would use the main dealer or a VW specialised that's been recommended to you, but that's just me. Must be some Indy specialised around your area that peeps on here can recommend you. Post a seperate thread asking just that.
Paid a fair bit for my 4 year service inc. Camebelt/Waterpump! If your car is a petrol then get them to change the fuel filter as well while there at it.
PRICES FROM VW WEBSITE
http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing/fixed-price-servicing
Major service £279
Camebelt etc £479
Try and get them to do a package including
Brake fluid change £59
Fuel filter change £55
Air con refresh £29
I would want all that lot doing for £750 TBH, you can but ask! :happy2:

JKM just did a 60k service on mine £259, and cambelt water pump shouldn't be more than £399, maybe less, so there's £100 saving right there...
-
I just had 4 yr service and cam belt and water pump it was just under £700 at vw main agent

Rutherfords Seat in earlston. 20 min drive out of Edinburgh. Vag parts used warranty friendly. Absolutely top service.
Call and ask for Brian they were £100 cheaper for a basic service over western for the edition 30. I've used them for years.
Book in for a Saturday morning and you can have breakfast in he cafe next door while they do the service. Failing that they own the petrol station so you can pickup a courtesy car the night before and return it up till 21:00 the night after.

Try these lot - http://www.gtiworld.co.uk/ (http://www.gtiworld.co.uk/)
A lot of independant specialists will only use OEM parts and as long as they've been recommended to you shopuld be ok.

I'm from just outside Edinburgh and work in Loanhead. Autohaus have done me an excellent service over the last year I've used them. They were set up by two Audi specialists and now employ a couple of guys with experience in the VAG Group. They dabble a little in BMW, Range Rover and Porsche but have learnt their trade on VAg cars. Have a look at www.autohausedinburgh.co.uk for their details. Tell them Sandy from MacTaggart's send you. :happy2:

Ive used the dealers in the past for servicing and have a couple of points for you to consider:
For the service, does the dealer you got the quote from use Long Life oil? for mine (2007 ED30) VW manchester wanted to user normal oil and i had to pay extra for the to use LL oil (an extra £30 IIRC).
Does the service include spark plugs? Even though spark plugs are on the list of items covered in the major service, the dealers will only change the plugs as stated in the manual for your vehicle (i believe the plugs are quite expensive). I think its 60k for the GTI so yours will be due. However, i change mine every 2 years so would have to pay extra if i wanted to change them more frequently.
consider getting the timing belt and water pump from Dave at SERE motors - its a SEAT dealer so the parts are genuine VAG and come with the 2 year warranty. I saved £100 on the kit from Dave.

I'm going there on Saturday. Getting a major service done plus tracking, air con, haldex oil for rear diff and also remapped. £650 inc VAT. Cracking price.

When regarding cambelt i feel easier paying that little more to a dealer just incase somethings goes wrong.
I can only speak about my local dealer 'White Rose VW' in crosshills, they have always reduced the rates, gone out of there way to fit me in even when booked up for a few weeks. Example of this came on my mk4 when the aux belt tensioner failed on a saturday morning. Gave them a ring asking cost ect and when it could be done, reply.....' Drop it in now and i will fit it in and it will be ready for 1pm when we finish' :congrats:
They have fought my corner on many an out of warranty claim before, even when the window regs failed on the mk4 i paid about £90 for it to be fixed, day after they rang me, refunded the money and said we've done it good will and will chase VW HQ for the money, also can we have it back as we will do the otherside for you also!!.
It always pays to build up a good rapport with your dealer and ask for a price reduction!

Midland vw just quoted me £490 for everything (belt, tensioners, water pump and minor service and full inspection with diagnostics report).
Central vw and Audi then quoted me £480 for the same...
