Title: Which Coilovers?
Post by: HDautos on September 19, 2012, 03:38:12 pm
Looking to buy some coilovers soon for my GTI. Just wanting to know which are good and which are bad as been told some won't lower as much as others etc. What ones are members on her running? Prices makes etc would be helpfull. Cheers Rob

.
Do you want coilovers for their adjustability and handling? Or just to lower for the look of your car?

Bilstein and KW are the prime brands for coilovers (for good reason).

Cheaper to get lowering springs/shocks, not coilovers, if you just want the stance look. Bilstein offer a good option.

Alittle more info on what your planning on doing ie just lower for shows etc lower for handling on road or lowering for track use?

Who told you that info? KW have always been great with warranty claims with us. Not that we have many.

Vmaxx are utter rubbish I'm afraid, great to sell as they are stacked with profit but as for quality there isn't much lower. Basically rebranded stuff that you see for £179 on eBay. We refuse to fit them let alone sell them.

I've got Weitec Hicon GTs and I'm very happy with them. I asked vRSAlex if he recommended I change them and he said there's no point i.e. I won't see much in the way of extra performance for the additional outlay.

I took that to mean that they're a good balance between price and performance. The ride comfort is even better than my standard Audi S-Line suspension (tho that's similar to saying Mother Teresa was a better person than Hitler - it was never really much of a contest to begin with).

Just sent you a PM but for the benefit of the forum, I'd recommend these

http://www.gnjmotorsport.com/products/KW-Variant-1-Basic-Coilover-Suspension-Kit-Golf-5-%7B47%7D-Golf-5-Plus-1.9TDi%2C-GTi-2.0T-FSi%2C-2.0SDi%2C-2.0TDi%2C-GT-2.0TDi-FWD-%2803%252d%29.html

Adjustable damping is only necessary for people who frequently go on track. For fast road use any of the AP, Weitec, KW or Bilstein kits are what I'd go for.

Bilstein B12, although not coilovers will be far better than any sub £1k coil over kit. I use them on all of my own cars and have driven most kits for the mk5 chassis and these feel best.

What wheels have you gone for?

I think if I was looking again for coils sub £600 id go with KW1's

I am absolutely 100% sure I will be reporting back they are awesome.

I get a lot of feedback from customers hence me choosing to use these on our own demo. I have also been in a Mk5 with them fitted and they seemed great then.

Not sure when I will get around to fitting mine though, got loads on at the minute and our unit is still not ready :(

I've had b12 on for about 2 week now and they've settled in the drop looks enough my back tyre has scrubbed a couple of times on fast bumpy corners but nothing too be concerned about this could be down to the 9.5" wide rears though :) the ride is good and I think turn in is sharper I had alignment done when fitted and my toe angle was altered a little bit but all in all I'm happy with the result
