question..........
do you really need to use this to drain the housing if its pointing down?
Do you need the tool that people go on about?
Anything else I need to know?
Cheers

I've only just bought one from amazon. Haven't bothered using one before but thought there's less chance of making any mess if I use it.

Anybody else know

Anybody else know
No. You don't need it. It's a 'nice to have'
-
So do you use the pip to drain or just take the whole housing off and be careful not to make a mess. If not how does the pip work?

I drain the filter housing into a pig.
I have recently bought the VW tool (a threaded collar with a bit of vacuum tubing attached) to ensure there is no mess made.
You unscrew the cap on the bottom of the filter housing, press in the little nipple and 'lodge' it to one side allowing the oil to flow out.
The Vw tool screws onto the bottom of your filter housing, where the little nipple is and in doin so operates the nipple allowing oil to flow down the tubing so you can direct it into your oil pig, brew, mouth where ever you like
Hope that's a bit clearer for you

Not genuine Vw but does the same job an a fraction of the price

Transport the oil to the workshop at work to dispose of and when the pikeys see its only been used for 5k they take it for their own cars lol

Anybody had any problems with the pip passing oil after you have drained and re-filled? Noticed it was a bit wet.
Since had a look and it was coming from the screw in cover.
Cleaned it all up put some PTFE tape on the cap, screwed it back in now its bone dry.
Does the pip sometimes pass a little oil after a change.
I need your experiences to settle my mind, I keep looking for leaks every morning!!
Cheers

Any comments
Had a look on the net and the housings are prone to cracking?
-
Id imagine it's cheap to replace if it cracked, but shouldn't if not over tightened.
If the nipple is returned to its original position it wont leak unless its f**ked
