Title: My new MK6 GTI Wheels ;0)
Post by: Greeners on November 22, 2008, 07:24:24 pm
Well after seeing those beautiful sparkling Monza's on the MK6 GTI whilst in Berlin I couldn't get them out of my head so decided to make my own

After finding 3 more as I already had a damaged one in the garage  :ashamed: I took them to A1 Wheels in Wolverhampton and told them what I wanted

And I must say I was blown away with what they did to them!! I think the finish is an improvement over the factory finish as the machined part give's a hologram effect in the sunlight  8)

After a few coats of Collinite's and Poorboys wheel sealent

And on the car, apologies for the pic quality as I ran out of time/light.

And repaired! As all 4 were damaged. One quite badly  :ashamed: They used a new acrylic laquer that theyv'e only just started using and the guy who painted them was really happy with the finish. Im not worried about white worm as they are cleaned and protected regularly

Yes - they paint the wheels in the desired colour then machine the face. The edges from the black to the machined edge are stunning  8)

Obviously you can have the inserts in any colour

The Rimming king??  What's all that about then??

The wheels look great.  Very nicely finished.

When they machined them, they must have taken off some material from the face, has this made the lip any thinner?

Very very nice.......... :happy2:

Very good point Mr Balloon  Mark and I were looking at the wheels on Saturday and noticed the lip wasn't as wide. It also give's a definate end to the inserts on the edge of the wheel which I like. Plus they must be lighter now too

I know what you mean Robin but the dealer had made a shoddy repair on two of the wheels and I wasn't happy with them as with the matt finish they looked a different colour.
I may get them changed back to Matt in the future, but I love the way they gloss ones sparkle in the sunlight  :happy2:

Oh you are sh*tting me! Those black Monzas look soo much better than the Pescaras. As I've said before, VW should have kept the Monzas for the ED30 and used the Pescaras on the stock GTI. Or at least given us some lush ones like Vorx or similar.

^^^^

This raises the interesting question of what percentage of GTI owners are 'enthusiasts'? (Defining people like us as 'enthusiasts').

Judging by the percentage of other GTI drivers I see on the road who don't acknowledge a wave (or is it simply English reserve?), it's a sad indication. I guess that for some, the GTI badge only indicates a different model of Golf and merely satisfies their badge snobbism.

i would say compared to say a Ford ST forum or Seat cupra we are way way behind in the percentage stakes, its something i have noticed since buying the GTi

Put it this way Robin, I have two Golf GTI's on my fleet and when I see the state they let these cars get into I realise it was more of a badge thing than an enthusiasts choice.

It's a shame but hopefully the second owners of these company cars will be buying them for what they are and joining us here  :happy2:

I spoke to Nigel this morning - Extremely helpful chap - I wanted to two-tone (black on the inserts) powdercoat my Monza 18's, but it's not possible to get a clean line as it's all painted.

However, I'm going to visit them to check out their colours.

....

Hi Nathan,

I spoke to Nigel this morning - Extremely helpful chap - I wanted to two-tone (black on the inserts) powdercoat my Monza 18's, but it's not possible to get a clean line as it's all painted.

However, I'm going to visit them to check out their colours.

:happy2:

I dont think that your pics do it justice. Im sure it looks A LOT better in real life. So, I'm looking forward to them at the meet!

In actual fact, I saw this done on a silver GTI about 10 months ago - it was at my local dealer for sale. I found that it was only when you got close up to the car that you noticed the difference. I couldn't really decide whether I liked it or not, sometimes it looked good, other times it looked bad.

But I have a funny feeling that yours will look great in real life !!!

Nathan - Have you got any good sharp pics of your new(est!) rims actually on your car, please?

I meant to take some pics at the meet but you know what it was like and I forgot!!

Reason is that I'm preparing a How-To/Problem-solving topic on white worm and illustrating the various options - Yours being one option and mine another option.

Thanks - Just post any pics in this thread and I'll transfer :happy2:

Just a word of advice (to take or to leave), Nathan The Green Rim King:

It's best not to apply any tyre dressing on any part of the tread at all - Even the shoulder. Stop it on the top edge of the flat wall which carries the graphics. Reason is that if you are cornering very hard, you want grip/adhesion to work on the shoulders and tyre dressing works against you achieving this.

I noticed this the first time I used tyre dressing and didn't apply it carefully enough (well actually too much) so ended up getting it on a little bit of the tread. When I went out later that day, car was having difficulty swinging round a roundabout at speed where the previous weeks, it was handling fine.

I've previously used the side of a small sponge, which probably works the same, but is useful to have a 'dedicated tool' for the job!!!!!

Robin, after seeing them on the MK6 and the guy that was introducing it mentioned the black inserts were designed to do just that, I couldn't get them out of my head and needed to have some on my car (even though I had just recently purchased new wheels  :ashamed:).

I am really pleased with them and will be reluctant to put the black huffs back on in the Spring............

....Aren't you putting the cart before the horse?

- Winter wheels:
Black Huffs because they have no potential white worm issues and it's much more likely to happen in Winter.

- Summer wheels:
Diamond-cut Monzas with black inserts to show themselves off much better on sunny days and in photos.

But what will you do for Spring and Autumn?
