hi guys, i need new tyres for my 08 gti i just got the other day but i want something with the quietest road noise available.
it has michelins on it just now with the fronts at 4mm and the backs at 3.5 mms and i assume the road noise i get is maybe a combination of pretty worn tyres and just the brand being noisy ?
if anyone has any feedback on this can you let me know,
i only want to use premium tyres but finding it hard to get unbiased reviews
all the best guys
-
The quietest tyres ive ever had are PS3's, not badly priced either, although not fantastic on wear!
-
dont mind if a tyre wears down a bit quicker than say a continental but what i need is something very quiet, very grippy so it gives me the best chance in the snow to come, dont want winters on this car but something softish and quiet with decent mileage i guess, i used to sell tyres many years ago and pirelli was the grippiest then but that was a while ago and dont know about there road noise etc
-
Look on tyre comparison sites, but PS3's get my vote, bout £119 a tyre
-
thanks for your advise but find the comparison sites to biased so thought i would put the question to gti users,,,, is road noise normal at 3.5mm, compared to new 7mm tyre

....The only grippy tyres which will stand a chance in the snow are purpose-made Winter tyres. You should know that if you used to sell tyres, mate. :surprised:
"Very quiet" and "very grippy" don't usually go together.
Driving through any snow is never usually quiet anyway, so why does it matter?
-
I agree with RR, any type of sports tyre will make no difference in the snow. If u want a faulty grippy and damp weather tyre with low noise I recommend the uniroyal RS2
-
rr maybe im not making myself clear here, yes i used to sell tyres many years ago in fact i managed the place and disagree with you on the fact that the only option is a snow tyre.
please let me clarify what i am looking for
i am looking for a tyre that is quiet to run ( not talking about when there is snow but the rest of the year instead )
i am also needing the tyre to have a soft compound so IT WILL HELP IN THE SNOW, not snow tyre capabilities
when i was in the tyre game all manufacturers had different characteristics attached to their product with best sellers in this order, michelin = ( good all round tyre ),,,,, bridgestone = ( also good all round tyre but slightly less popular than michelin,,, continental =( good mileage tyre but not the best as quite a hard compound and stopping distances a bit more than previous two,,, pirelli = ( good grippy tyre but wears down a bit quick due to soft compound ) then goodyear / dunlop = ( same company so quality a bit similar,,, not classed as a premium tyre in a lot of sizes but better than a mid range )
that was the feedback and training i got from manufacturers and literally thousands of customers,,,, not saying it is spot on but when i was in the selling game and with the tread patterns available at that time and the quality each brand possessed that was the general layout.
so each road tyre in the size i am looking for has different characteristics, some will be noisier that others and some will grip better than others, my question is what is the current best mix of these two things,,,,,
not meaning to rub you up the wrong way rr but there is a proper mix out there and that is what i am trying to find
-
^^^^
Don't worry, you aren't rubbing me up the wrong way, mate - Nor are you rubbering me up the wrong way
I'm afraid that your original post wasn't clear enough and I misunderstood you. No problem and thanks for explaining further :happy2:

thanks for that rr, yes i wasnt very clear on original post so apologies, do you think a lot of the noise i am getting is due to the tyres being at 4mm at best ?
and also they have the 3 all round grooves on my tyres which i am not sure if they are related to road noise apposed to something like a sideways always tread,,, are they quieter ? i will keep looking for answers for a while, many than ks again

....My own car's setup with aftermarket engine mounts, non-resonated Milltek exhaust, and various suspension and handling mods, tend to mask tyre noise so I am not the best person to know the answer to your question. Tyre noise is not something which registers, so I can only conclude that it's not intrusive in my case.
I have been running on Goodyear Asymmetrics for quite a few sets now and like their wet and dry fast road handling characteristics - It's a case of it works so why mend it.
Hopefully some other guys here will be better able to answer your question :happy2:
-
thanks rr, thats actually the tyres that i have found best so far the new goodyear asymetricals but will keep looking for feedback on them as i can only get biased manufacturing feedback just now, thanks again
-
I' Using the The Proxes T1R tyres and get good feedback from them not to noisey either, very good in the dry & good in the wet...
I've been happy with them so far.

....Well, I'm not an expert tyre tester but driving on GY Asymmetrics since they were first introduced, I have driven all year round on them through all seasonal weather and still felt confident in them. Obviously they will have limitations such as grip in snow but I live on the South coast and simply don't drive when there is snow.
They have greatly surprised me positively in torrential rain and standing water conditions although I always slow down accordingly. So, Goodyear Asymmetrics get my vote :happy2:

thanks for that, i have found the goodyear up to date tread pattern and they are £440 for a set of 4, will keep on it until i decide on the wheels, thanks

Are Hankook tyres any good?
-
wasnt a brand i was alloyed to stock ( hancooks ) so dunno about them
-
During the 11 month ownership of my GTI it had pilot sport 3's on all round, from factory. Down to about 3mm all round after 5 months and the road noise was noticeable for sure. I changed all four for P-Zero's and the road noise was cut by half. I think P-Zero's are a softer tyre anyway.
-
These new stickers on tyres have info like noise on them so sites you are looking at will probably tell you which are quiet.
-
thanks guys, yes i just bought the car, to clarify,,, the wheels that where on the car when the garage got it where original monza 11s fom factory and had the 4 michelins on it already so rather than reconing the wheels they simply put reps onto the existing tyres hence the reason why i now have new rep alloys with decent tyres on them,,, but,,, although all 4 tyres are michelins the 2 on the left side are different tread patterns to the 2 on the right side and 2 of the tyres are the originals ( can tell by the dot code date on the tyres ) so at some point the lady that owned the car previouslly had 2 new tyres on but for some stupid reason the selling garage put them on the wrong axels as they should have put the same tread on the back and the other 2 on the front,,,, hope that clears that up now.
anyway as i said before the tread pattern is very very minor difference with only the outside wall of the tyre being a different threading so i wont bother swapping them around to save poss damage by stupid garage.
i am still deciding wether to put new tyres on the reps bearing in mind they are 7 days old today and as far as reps go they seem good ones,,, or on the other hand i may buy new genuine shadow monzas with new tyres as a package or something.
i know some people say reps are garbage but are they really ?
i have read reviews on the comparisons and i cant really see any massive feedback difference,,, i am not saying there isnt but before i spend major money on genuins i will be looking for more evidence,,,, you could argue the point that a gti enthuisiast will know they are reps but i guess thats about 1 person out of a thousand or so that will see my car day to day,,,,,,,, do you see my point here.
so to me putting premium tyres onto rep wheels is not madness unless i can find some kind of feedback or proof that the wheels are inferior.
i have read the differences in forged wheels etc but basically it just says that they are better and not really a problem not to have ?????
if anyone has any links or anything that makes the differences clear then please let me know.
and also i think the 3 grooves i have on the miches that go all around the tyre ( the central three quarter pattern ) are a contributing factor to road noise,,,, im not 100% on this but i think a tread pattern that doesnt have the deep grooves in a complete circular pattern may be quieter, i need to do a bit more study on this.
i personally have sold prob in the region of 15000 tyres when i worked for quik fit as every sale went through me, we also had a few taxi fleets so i got massive feedback over the years but this was a few years ago and i aint up to date on the current tread patterns and not a heck of a lot of people asked the question about very low road noise tyres,,,,,, hey i would maybe notice straight away that my current tyres are noisy due to the tread left as soon as i put any new set of 4 on but i dont want to have the same problem in a year or so time when they get down to 5mm or so hence the questions ( do you get my point here )
anyway any thoughts are appreciated guys

Have had Goodyear F1 Assy 2's on for 3-4 weeks now, so well run in.
Very quiet compared to budget rubbish on before. Grip is VASTLY better especially in the wet. Can push on hard, wet or dry.
Would recommend highly. Get them on. :happy2:

capone many thanks,,, my own research has put they tyres at the top of my list already, they look the best so well done the fact you got them,,, looks like the tyre i am heading towards tbh,,, how much did you pay,,, cheapest i seen was £420 delivered
-
All tyres made now have a new label on. This gives the buyer a lot more info including a tyre noise decibel number. Sadly I'm not sure which are the quietest as we are only a small company and don't keep huge stocks, but keep an eye out for these. They also give fuel economy and wet weather performance ratings. It looks like the sticker you get on a washing machine etc!

X2 Had these on for the past 15000miles Great allrounder. IIRC I paid £80ea fitted
Only tyre that I've had on which was quiet was the Michelin Energy ££££££££ but 20000miles
Im due a change shortly especially with the winter approaching fast

na i never beleive any tyres label as they are of biased opinion and miches are on it just now and are noisy
-
I'm not sure if the tyre companies or an independent tester issue label as we had a Mich and a budget debica in last week with the same db rating. where the Mich scored better was on fuel and weather conditions.

it is the manufacturers own labels so i dont trust them, better listenning to loads of people who drive the same car prob

Pirelli P-Zero Nero was rated EVO mags num one over all tyre in 2012s tyre test which was carried out on a new shape Audi A3 albeit with 17" wheels. Maybe worth a try

ah thought so, cheers for that then,,,, what would your opinion be on the best all round tyre 18s for the gti ? i bought the car with 4 miches on it but 2 diff tread patterns i have lol and to make matters worse i have same tread patterns on the off side and diff on the near side,,, very similar but they are dif though, all down to around 3.5mm and i find the road noise a bit excessive so i am lookinf for a good softish grip tyre with the best or should i say quietest road noise i can buy, i have had the goodyear eagle f1 asyms recommended by a lot of people but still not sure, also can i ask in your opinion a tyre that has blatent central three quarter grooves on it, so deep ones all the way round the tyre apposed to maybe a tyre that is more outward tread block design, would you say the 3 dep grooves contribute to road noise volume ? really need to find a quiet tyre and would be interested in whether you think my road noise is caused by my current tread depth etc.
ps,,, just bought the car so thats the tyres that came with it hence the stupid set up,,, i know 2 of my tyres are from new reading the dot codes and have done 38k
-
i had the goodyears on mine and found them excellent in all areas :happy2:also look at the michelin ps3 tyre as well. The mk5 golf have a tendancy to wear the inner of the back tyres making bad high spots making then really noisy of which the worsed are dunlop and pirelli for doing it.

thanks for that andy, think i am heading for the goodyears, do you think my current front tyres at 3.5mm and backs at 4mm, pretty even wear on all are contributing to my road noise, remember 2 diff tread patterns although very similar but on wrong axels ?
-
It is possible thats causing road noise with the tyres being different tread. The mk5 golf are pretty quite in the car down the motor way.The good years are a excellent choice, been looking for some for myself in 19" but god they are expensive :signLOL:
-
falkens fk452 not that expensive and werent that noisy.maybe check tracken too mate
