Title: Martial Arts - What do you do?
Post by: Matto on September 27, 2012, 05:25:25 pm
I'm just interested in what people on here do and what grades if any. There seems to be quite a diverse range of different disciplines.

I will start. Been kickboxing since January. Currently orange belt with green being next.

Also having my first go at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu this evening.

Did taekwondo years ago, just to keep fit, really enjoyed it until I dislocated my knee cap and tore the cartalidge around it. Couldn't do it after that  :sad1:  ended up a Plain Blue belt, about half way.

 :happy2:

I started Karate when I was 7 (My step father was a Red Belt at the time and got me and my brother into it), my Father got his Blackbelt 2 years later, I gave up when we moved house (could not get there in time due my father work hours), I was a green belt  .

Fast forward to me being 27 and I started Muay Thai when I was living in Singapore purely for fitness, although I did enjoy sparring with some of the lads who fought regularly (Apparently I have very quick reactions and quick hands for a big lad  ), did that for 18 months.

Fast forward to now (39) and I start Jeet Kune Do next wednesday (again for getting back into shape mainly), was supposed to start 2 weeks ago but been so busy after house/business move, really looking forward it, looked into Wushu and Wing Chun before opting for JKD.  :happy2:, If I dont like it (or the people) I will go to Wing Chun Classes instead, I am not fussed either way  :signLOL:

They do several Martial Arts at the place I am going (Ronin Combat Academy), including JKD, MMA, Muay Thai, Filipino Arts (Dirty Boxing), Kenpo etc.

I was kickboxer for about 2 years. Got into it because of a mate of mine who was really into martial arts. He used to teach me some kung fu on an ad hoc basis on weekends too.

Never bothered with grading, but I was fairly proficient and could beat people with a yellow belt (which in my classes was the 3rd rung on the ladder from bottom. As far as I'm aware Kickboxing doesn't formally use a belt grading system.)

Not done it in a while tho. I'm hoping to pick up Shaolin Kung Fu this year.

Boxing, because its a mans sport   :P

Been doing it best part of 16 years.  Not fought or trained properly in ages now though, as I had to make a choice in my job whether to keep boxing(and get held back on promotion at work) or pursue my trade. I chose to pursue my career instead, but i'm a qualified coach now which if anything is more nerve racking during the bout than it was being the boxer

Done Shotokan Karate when I was a wee nipper achieving a Blue belt, I think  The guy teaching us had some personal issues which prompted me to stop  :stupid: . Great for fitness for sure. Always said I would like to take it up again, but what with my dodgy knee an all  :chicken:

I'm quite surprised with how many different styles there are. Some I have never heard of before.

Ip man is a top film, recommended it to anyone, even people not into martial arts.  So wanted a wooden man in the garage after watching it.

I'm a first Dan black belt at Tae Kwon Do (TAGB).  Used to compete but since I turned 40 my body seems to be constantly playing up, hamstrings, back, etc etc.............   Be warned you 30 somethings   Physio costs delaying my BCS exhaust purchase.  :sad1:

Both my kids do it, my eldest is a black belt and my youngest is about halfway there (blue tag).  It's done them the world of good, both confident little fellas, and respectful (most of the time !)

Don't if its classified as a martial arts I'm going to a Krav Maga class and love it but if it came down to using it would make a fool of myself but you never no  :signLOL:

My brother, sifu mark Jackson trained under Leung ting for about 8 years when I was younger, went all overthrew world with him doing gung fu. He (Leung ting) stayed at our parents house with us quite a few times when I was growing up. Didn't have a clue who he was when I was growing up, now realise he's the real deal. Very cool + I get trained for free, have been since I was 8 years old, now 34. I find gung fu to give me a flexible body and an extreme mental strength

Krav Maga is what the Israeli Special forces use and was developed into a martial art I believe (correct me If I am wrong)

Its pretty much street fighting, dirty style. Use whatever weapons you can get your hands on casuing maximum damage as possible. Not sure if its true, but had heard that progressing through Krav Maga involved having one of the instructors follow you home and attack you and assess your reactions. Its quite an agressive martial art to get into. I went to an opening evening about 10 years ago...didnt stay for long as it was mostly quite massive blokes...just didnt flow with my chi  :innocent:

Not trained in years but I got my 1st degree in Tae Kwon Do - ITF. Used to do kickboxing regular too at the same time. Both complimented each other.
Nowadays I simply go to the gym for fitness as my work rota is a pain for classes.

After much deliberation (and no time recently) and Wing Chun classes are closer I opted to go for Wing Chun classes, 1st one tonight  :jumpmove:, looking forward to it.

Si Hing Graham Paul is the instructor, trained under Sifu Brian desir who trained under Master Sam Kwok and Grandmaster Ip Chun in Hong Kong.

First session went well, thoroughly enjoyed it, good bunch of people, worked up a good sweat, looks like I found my twice weekly fitness regime  :happy2:

Probably going to get a few private lessons from him too to get me upto speed a little quicker as I am around 4-5 weeks behind the next newest guy to me so would be good to get to same level.

1st Dan ITF TKD but gave up just before taking 2nd Dan (trained upto and for it) due to babies and work.

Spent six years and ten plus hours a week training for the 1st Dan.

Loved it totally but fooked my shoulders in an MTB crash, turned my ankle over numerous times during training and generally just ache now, hips, elbows, knees etc etc.

Also trained in a lot of self defence techniques and stick fighting.

Great fun and met some good friends.

I'm hoping the kids will want to go so I can take them and just leisurely train but knowing me I always go to the extreme so its unlikely to stay like that.
