My current tyres are shocking, especially in the wet... I can't even remember what brand they are but they aren't a well known make so to try and avoid ending up in a ditch I am going to have them replaced before the wetter weather sets in!
I know this question gets asked a lot but recommendations? Goodyear F1 / Michelin Pilot Sport 2 / Falken 452 ?
My local ATS place is doing the PS2's for £135 each fully fitted plus there's an offer on which would mean I'd get £50 worth of fuel too when buying two or more tyres. Sound pretty good?
-
All depends on you budget really, the Mich, good year and contI are all good tyres, mid range hankooks, avon, falken
-
I've just fitted a full set of Hankook Ventus V12's. Very impressed so far.
-
My car has Hankook Ventus V12 Evo 225/45 ZR17's on it. I'm really impressed, very quiet comfortable ride, handle well in the dry and on the soaking M25 and M20 last week they were totally flawless, also pushed them a bit in the wet on country road commute this morning and again really impressed.
First time I've ever had anything other than Bridgestone, Continental or Pirelli in maybe 10 years on different cars and think they are probably the best I've ever had.
-
hi, i have been running a thread on this recently and also i sold tyres for a living up until a few years ago so i may be able to help you.
i currently have michelins on my car and they where there when i got it 2 weeks ago so hence the research as they are down to 3mm
after all the feedback etc the best tyres that keep coming out is goodyear f1 asymetric.
dont go near continental as they are to hard a tyre, mich is ok but noisy cabin when above 30mph, also i checked a lot of review sites and again the goodyear came up tops,,,, i am looking for something with low road noise, very good grip, as good on snow as you can get without buying winter tyres and the goodyear seems to fit the bill.
cant remember the exact tread pattern but if you look for goodyear f1 asymetric and you will figure it out,,,, the last price i seen was £420 delivered but not fitted although that was a very quick price search so you may find cheaper
i will prob buy a set of them soon but just bought the car so m any things im chasing lol
good luck dude
ps,,, dont buy continental,,, hard ride and noisy although long mileage
-
Hanlook are a very good tyre and sell loads at work,Michelin have 40% owner ship in the company
-
Thanks! I see they are about £120 each which means not much less though than the PS2's after discount. Decisions decisions...
-
Thanks! I see they are about £120 each which means not much less though than the PS2's after discount. Decisions decisions...
yeah decision time,,, hancook is part owned by michelin but they do not use the same quality of rubber on them because if it was as good as the michelin branded tyre then that would effect michelin sales, so common sense says that it is slightly inferior to the michelin brand.
same as bridgestone, they own firestone brand tyres so they can keep a foot in the mid range market but dont use as good a rubber on them, so they are a cheaper tyre.
do some research on the goodyears,,,, they are better than the michelins and also better than the hancooks, during my 2 years owning a tyre depot i personally sold about 15000 tyres but that was a few years ago though,,, try and get onto non biased review sites, try 4 or so and see what the consences is
-
Thanks guys - there are so many different tyres with not much difference in price between them that it's hard to choose!
-
The trouble with the good years is they wear down quick but are a very good product, find pirellis are not as good as they used to be
-
Thanks guys - there are so many different tyres with not much difference in price between them that it's hard to choose!
yep, hence the reason why i had to heavily research them,,, worse thing is you pay £400 or so, get them fitted then get up to 60mph and you hear the constant rumble from them,,,,, research dude

Have been running Goodyear Eagle F1 ASYMMETRIC 2's 225/40/18 92Y the last 6 months and am very happy with their all round "everyday" qualities, it's personal preference TBH but I prefer these to my previous tyres, Conti' sport contact 5's.
From Camskill (delivered only) at £110.24 per corner

stay away from the Falkens. i always used to think they were an OK tyre, but then i swapped to ContiSport Contact 3s and the Contis were as good in the wet as the Falkens were in the dry!!
I recommend the CSC 3s 100%, but i'll be trying Hankooks next time tyres need changing :happy2:
-
Only road tyre i will consider is the Michelin Pilot Super Sport after i've had them in 19".
They are now in 18" 225-40, but only in loadindex 88. I would still only consider them. They are above the rest :happy2:
-
hi i got 4x 225 40 18 falken fk452 from camskill cheaper than any local and they were quite a good tyre. running 19 budges the now not recomended, there like plastic lol

thants what i have on the car just now in 18s and i am finding them noisy
-
It's all about the GY Eagle F1 Assy 2's :P
-
Federal RS-R's are worth a look. I've got them as a wet tyre on my mini track car, they provide good grip and seem to be relatively quiet.
Well, as quiet as a tyre can be alongside @100db of exhaust noise
-
There are loads to recommend. Every ones views are interesting, im sure that if you go for flagship Goodyears or Michelins etc you wont go far wrong. I have Michelin PS3's and love them in every condition and every type of driving. They last as well. I know people with continentals and even though they are a good tyre they just dont last.
Cheers
-
Uniroyal Rainsport 2. Excellent and better than the Vreds and Contis I've had. Won't break the bank either. :happy2:
-
I'm another fan of the Goodyear Eagle F1 asy2
Best all round tyre I have have ever used
-
I run Parada spec 2's .. love them. maybe not the best tyre in the wet but i never drive fast in the wet anyway.
-

X2 best tyres I've ever bought :notworthy:
-
I run Parada spec 2's .. love them. maybe not the best tyre in the wet but i never drive fast in the wet anyway.
Always wondered about these... I'd like some based on looks alone, they're meant to be brilliant in the dry, but how bad are they in the wet, if you take it steady, should you have any issues? Don;t want the car swapping ends going round a corner lol
Also I can only find in 92w, is this what you run?
-
I've just fitted Conti Sport Contact 5p tyres to my new rims in 225/35/19. Very please so far done about a 1000 miles on them and they ride the bumps well for an Ultra low profile tyre, noise levels are good too.
-

yeh i run 92w
They are the best tyres i have owned in the dry they are unbeatable unless you go for track/road tyre (to much wear to run as a daily car) In the wet they have never failed me . . . No tyre is good in the wet imo some are better than others but will never be "good" . I never drive fast in the wet , i don't drive slow just not as fast as i would . 370bhp fwd in the wet on any tyre is alot to ask .. they are the perfect tyres for me. Owned 2 sets now and when i need new ones it will be these. People may disagree with what i am saying but a tyre is a personal prefrence to whom drives the car , these are just my personal prefrence :happy2:
-
As said in previous post, Uniroyal Rainsport 2s are brilliant especially in wet :)

What about toyo T1R or T1S ?
I was going to get the T1R but now I am not sure

.
7 years ago my Mk5 GTI came from the factory with Continentals, which I believe are German and doubtless Volkswagen have a deal/contract with Continental to supply.
Most tyre experts say that different tyres will suit different cars or vehicles - Not individual cars but models. So for example, a Vredestein Sessanta might suit a FWD Golf but not a RWD BMW (I don't know that example to be the case by the way).
Unless we experience particular problems which pitch us off into the hedge, most modern tyres from the established manufacturers do their job adequately and until we have experienced particular tyres it's all relative. The only tyres I have experienced on my Mk5 GTI are Continentals, Bridgestone Potenza's, Goodyear F1 Eagle Directionals, Goodyear Asymmetric 1's, Dunlop Sports Maxx, and Goodyear Asymmetric 2's. The Continentals of 7 years ago are nothing like as good as either of the Goodyear's and I am inclined to think that an asymmetric tread makes a big difference - especially in the wet.
A few folks here have tried Vredestein Sessanta asymmetrics and reported being happy with them apart from needing to get warm, but they don't seem to have sold like hot cakes. They are a bit more expensive I think.
Factors influencing which tyres we buy are (not in order of importance):
- Performance (handling) in both wet and dry cos it now rains a lot in the UK.
- Road noise.
- Tread and rubber eye-candy < Yes, it has been researched and found to be true.
- Price.
The only contact a car has with the road is 4 small patches of rubber which are about the size of a CD disk each. So to buy any tyre just because it's the cheapest and which doesn't maximise your safety is, how can I say it without offending someone, stupid.
I have no hesitation in recommending Goodyear Asymmetrics and then it's just a case of finding the cheapest source and making sure they aren't versions manufactured outside the official factories.

^ The green caps are because my tyres are filled with nitrogen.
-
My current Goodyear Asy 2's are starting to run low and have to say they have been up there with the Bridgestone S-02's for levels of dry grip and a bit better in the wet. I've got Conti 3's on the rear and have to say they are better in 17 inch than 18! Lack of feedback really killed my confidence in them.
Time to take a look at some pricing me thinks.

Do you know approximately how much mileage you have done on your Goodyear Asy 2's, Fish? I'm terrible at keeping track of my tyre mileages :rolleye:

I dont know about you but i thought that the bridgestone potenza'z were aweful tyres and mine in particualar did not have a long life . :scared:

....The Bridgestone Potenza's I had were back in ~2006/7. I don't remember thinking they were awful but just that they weren't much different from my previous Continentals and didn't make me feel impressed.
The first big positive difference came from fitting Goodyear Eagle F1 Directionals.

Been using Toyo proxes for the last 6-7 years, cannot fault them for the price and performance (£100ea)

Feel free to have a look at them RR :happy2:, just look for a Dirty 5dr Candy ED30 :signLOL: :signLOL:

So far i've tried the following tyres on the golf:
Bridgestone Re050a, awful tyre, zero grip and the deform while standing still
Toyo R1R, excellent track/road tyre loads of grip even in the wet, don't last so long though
Toyo R888 excellent track tye, awful road manners
On the Touran we currently have Mich PS3, and i find it to be an excellent roadtyre, i haven't had the touran on track,,,, yet
Michelin Pilot Super Sport, excellent track tyre/excellent road tyre, as stated before they are a league above Mich Ps2-3, Goodyear F1 asym, and equivalent tyres, those tyres are very good indeed but the PSS is above the rest due to the use of Twaron and dual compound
-
.
Jake, you have reminded me that I did a trackday at Spa in the wet and had Goodyear Asymmetric 1's on. In one session I had an instructor in the driving seat for 4 laps and me driving for another 15 laps with him. Not as fast as John Hurdy's Ed30 of course but we didn't hang about and the tyres were so good that the instructor asked me what tyres we were on. This was after a day at the Nurburgring too.
A car never knows whether it's on a road or a track and I think this was a good test, although totally unscientific - Just real world driving.
-
big thumbs up for Pirelli P Zero's from me.
They wear relatively quickly but then again are a fairly soft compound
No issues considering I have a stage 1 map
-
^^^^
Yep, there's always going to be an element of compromise: Softer compound delivers more grip but wears quicker, etc. I'm glad we have lots of choices.

RR get you a trip in a mk 5 with the PSS, I have tried the Goodyear Asymmetric 2's, they are good no doubt but the PSS is as stated better. treadwear 300 and still able to hang on to stripped out bmw's and clio cup cars at Donington, looking like this afterwards.

Are the PSS available in 225 40 18 yet?
-
Robin, like you I've not really kept an eye on the mileage but I'd guess around 15k, holding down 330lb's so not bad. They are currently around 4.5mm as I've just had my MOT and they are starting to get a little slippy.
The S-02's I like and have had fitted give superb feedback as I said, but I'd say the wear rate is around the same as the Goodyear's. They were at the best when just above the wear markers. I've had Pirelli P-Zero Nero's which only came good after doing a track day and getting a proper heat cycle into them.
Fish
-
DFish... mine have also gone off a little bit recently.... but that might be sue to the slippy roads.
-
Replaced the Michelin Pilot Exalto's from delivery with Michelin PS3's, difference was like night and day - especially in the wet. Be going with the PS3's again when the time comes.

tend to agree with everything you say regarding tyres on this posting, yes the dealers do have different contracts with the tyre manufacturers,,, they have a sort of bidding session when designing the car etc to see what manufacturer wants to bend over backwards the most to get their rubber on the car as they also know that a large percentage of people will just rebuy like for like, the amount of older mostly people who used to come in for tyres which a lot knew nothing about mostly just asked for thw same that was on the car originally.
going on your posting and also many others i just bought myself a set of goodyear eagles asymetrical 2 xl 18s for £420 delivered as they seem like the best or one of the better tyres,,, look great apart from stupid city link putting their large delivery sticker right on the tread and it will only come of in a thousand tiny pieces :stupid:
so thanks for the tyre advice
-
Where did you get the set for £420 Scott?
-

hi, got them from camskill performence web site, £12 next day delivery, total was £420,,, if you buy them tell them to make citylink NOT put their silly massive sticker on the tread lol
-
Cheers mate, pretty much made my mind up now I want the Eagle F1's... would hate to end up with a choice I'm not happy with to save like a tenner a tyre!
My local tyre place would charge £18 wheel to fit... ouch! But I found them somewhere else and it'd come to around £470 fully fitted - I think that seems like a pretty good deal? :)
-
yeah that seems like a good deal, i still need to get mine fitted, will try my local place on monday but i want the wheel allignment checked and adjusted if necc, car is as straight as a di but new rubber costing ££££s is worth it as i dont think the lady that owned the car before me would have known about allignment,,,,, dont want they new f1s going sideways lol,,,,,,
great deal on the tyres mate :happy2: :congrats:
-
Thats the one thing I like.... people go buying at places like Camskill then forget that they then have to pay for fitting, so the good deal they got on tyres then goes out the windows most of the time.

thats what i am taking off at 4mm, bit to noisy on the 18s

only thing i would add is that I'm currently liking CSC5 :happy2: currently at 6ooo miless and counting.
They have given me more grip than the PS3 in the dry, about the same as PS3 in wet.
Only thing I dont like is what feels like softer sidewalls than PS3, but ultimately the grip has been better.
Ultimately though I want the PSS

What are your guys views on Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta these days compared to the F1's? Especially around wear?
Thanks

Had these on my BMW 530d sport and they were excellent tyres. Changed the car to a gti and will consider them when it comes time to change the tyres.

SaintSteve has had Vred Sessanta's on his Ed30.
-
I've got Toyos fitted on my car..it's a brilliant tyre...around £100 each
-
In the end I went for the F1 Asy 2's and immediately felt the difference! I have so much more grip now and feel much more confident when taking turns!
£475 for four fitted too so a pretty good price! :happy2:

well done mate, told you they where good, remember take it easy for first 100 miles to get the coating of them
-
I'm either going to fit Mich Pilot Super Sports , or Yok's AD08's as I run those on 2 other cars and cant complain about their performance at all. :happy2:
I do run Winter wheels / tyres on the Gti though so i'm not looking for an all year round tyre.
-
GY F1 all the way. The Ed35 has crappy Dunlop Sportmaxx's on which are rapidly wearing out and when they do(shoudlnt be too long), it will be F1's allround. Im so impressed with them Ive even fitted them to my 'Sportline' Kombi.
-
they are the best all round tyres you can buy if you combine all the reviews, great rubber
-
Eagle F1 AS2's are the best tyre I've used so far... soo much grip... the don't last long though :ashamed:
-
I went for the Michelin Pilot Sport 3's, they are incredibly grippy in both wet and dry, but the guys in Tyre City advised they do last significantly longer than the GY F1 Assy's. However, the downside is they are noisier than the Pirelli P Zero Rosso's I've had previously.
Swings and roundabouts really, once you're into Michelin/Continental/Pirelli/Goodyear territory, they are all excellent, but all have an area where they perform less well than the others. I guess it's up to you which weakness you can live with the most.
For me, cabin noise is immaterial, it's usually drowned out by House music! :jumpmove:
