yeah it was in performance vw a few years ago now

Looks lovely! I nearly bought a mk1 as a project to learn about cars and bits and bobs but didnt in the end as the costs involved would get silly :sad1:

I was planning on buying a 83 gti and one of my old mk4s to use as a donar car to carry out the 20v conversion myself, the price of the conversion really was high so i couldn't resist this one
-
I was looking at anything really as long as it was reasonably solid! There was a shell locally that looked good but it was just the shell. No engine etc! Then my brother reminded me we have got 2 capri's to play with. One is a Brooklands and the other is just a 2.0l laser :signLOL:
-
lovin that :happy2:

Did you get twm from portsmouth or around hampshire ? I saw this at a show called beach buggin

Love it, you lucky so and so! :notworthy:
When the title said "Beige" I thought NO, but that a gorgeous colour. You could eat your dinner from that engine bay it's so clean. What the interior like, can't believe it's that bad?
:happy2:

:happy2:
Ive got to say it wasnt my first choice of colour either but i love it.
Its better in the flesh and im pretty sure i will embrace the retro theme throughout the car.
It has porsche tombstone front seats and a gti rear seat so nothing matches it just generally wants tidying to
I will have them retrimmed before the show season though just got to decide what colour etc

Chocolate brown

Ok so a bit of an update
The car had a few places of rust and a couple of things i wasn't happy with so ive decided to strip it and respray it the only catch is the 1st show is now 17 weeks away!
Heres the process to date
The god aweful aero style fuel cap had to go 1 it didn't fit well and 2 its just not in keeping with the retro feel pics of the bad fitting cap and fuel pipe
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi45.tinypic.com%2F16awqqh.jpg&hash=e0d4ee3400291d041eabc6918cd778946a4e8ea1)
so out it was all stripped new filler neck has been bought
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.tinypic.com%2F2u6db9c.jpg&hash=61b04a04421233a080e772fd029ab298fa3b2900)
Then i attacked the lower rear panel as the corners were suffering from the good old rust
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi45.tinypic.com%2F35lw4s9.jpg&hash=f981de8af5a38cef019f584c25f41a59ba3c48a6)

new corner section welded in
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi47.tinypic.com%2F34nh7ut.jpg&hash=6a246bc9434c9eea86e49d3afbcb33dff9caab48)
then the cut out for the exhaust was filled in as it has a down swept tail pipe
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi47.tinypic.com%2F2qa2uex.jpg&hash=8b51e5a3092921b9d912a82c53a18d2ed8d2b656)
stripped the sill back to bare metal and all is good
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi45.tinypic.com%2F5nu6iw.jpg&hash=008345d7bc9bd7f6853fc60697710f2f50075c82)
next up is the drivers side front wing, its a aftermarket part non genuine and i hate the fit the profile is all wrong so ive bought a new genuine vw wing
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi46.tinypic.com%2Fw1689i.jpg&hash=3f16d4249669e917225841dcae814d8df180e641)

also the non genuine wing is missing the little reinforcing tabs -
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.tinypic.com%2F35a40g2.jpg&hash=b9e27491b80a59b19a164f6f98753c2aa8a7dede)
the genuine wing -
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.tinypic.com%2F2ephf0k.jpg&hash=d78fe8d3f48cc009dea35b11529f54cddfa7725f)
-
Then the strip down started
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.tinypic.com%2F64058i.jpg&hash=393929a3edc33e41e4e43f4c3221d98d25cff2f1)
in the process of this i found some rust in the drivers door so ive bought a new genuine door skin
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi47.tinypic.com%2Fi5n6zk.jpg&hash=f2a891379959e95852b385182a695efdcdab9036)

that brings us upto date, so at last it was time to etch prime all the bare metal although theres a long way to go its a turning point for me as at last things arent being stripped or taken off
i would like to say im not a bodyshop guy or a sprayer im a mechanic and i work on motor caravans, this is the 1st time ive ever really done body work even though ive modified cars for many years.
panels ready for etch primer i borrowed some panel stands from a neighbour

ive spent the last 2 1/2 months working on it, its been every evening ive only missed 2 days in that time and the last week solid on it in work time, the car had a resto in 2008 including underneath which is fine its stonechipped but painted beige as well
im concentrating on the shell and bay so i can show it through the year and drive it!
i have pleanty of plans for the future one of which will probably be the underside and wheel wells being painted again with no stonechip/underseal
-
loving this thread and cant believe you bought a minter and now putting your own stamp on it were as most would just buy it and drive it. Guess its just the fatal case of you start something and then it just snowballs :happy2:

Well it certainly seems to be turning into that. I do hanker after another mk1 but ive just decided to sell my mk2 as I dont have time for it and it just sits around. Bit worried if I get a mk1 it'll be a repeat performance. Anyways, good luck with it all and i'll be keeping a close eye :happy2:

Have you managed to source bolts for your wheels yet ? The cheapest I've found was Tunershop.de
That was for chrome plated ones ?
Have you got aluminium lips or Stainless ?
And are you going for stainless bolts or plated

Yeah, true. But ive always said i'd get another mk1 and the misses wont use the mk2 so figure i'll get a cheap sensible car and then plan on getting a mk1 down the line somewhere

And found another gearbox with the code i wanted ENJ this has a higher ratio than the current gearbox and will allow a better cruising speed, i may even be able to put a little more power down in 1st,2nd and 3rd haha
gave it a quick clean i haven't decided on colour yet paint it silver or same colour as the body like the previous box?

Stunning car! :happy2: I love Mk1s , funnily enough I tend to like the ones that ARENT a GTI , as I grew up with the cars in the 70s and very few people had the GTI but there were plenty of LS's etc going aroundand those are the cars that take me back to my youth! Nice to see one staying in its original colour as well , I cant wait to see this finished , its gonna be awesome! :congrats:
