Sorry if I'm not meant to be asking this, but has anyone got the new V9 maps installed?

Verbatim DL written at slowest speed.

Mmmm interesting, I use Verbatim DL too. Haven't had a chance to try it as yet. Perhaps Ed can shed some light?

I did have to leave mine about 4/5 of the way through. Left the RNS on and the car unlocked, came back to it and there was no message to say complete or anything. What's the best state to leave the vehicle in during an update?
Title: Re: V9 Maps - Western Europe

I usually hang around with the key in the ignition. Luckily it's right outside my workshop, so I carry on with other stuff while it's doing it's thing. The radio switches off after 20 minutes so could possibly cause an issue if not done by then and it switches off.

Put the disc in then it should ask if you want to save the maps or use off the disc.  Tap save then wait a few mins and press the eject button.  This will then show the progress bar.

I got to the point of it asking if i want to save to the HDD, left it a few mins and nothing happened so turned it off. Will have another bash tomorrow.

It copies in the background - takes about an hour in one hit, so I leave it in for the week whilst I drive  :happy2:

You need to make sure your on a 39xx or 4xxx firmware for this to work properly

Title: Re: V9 Maps - Western Europe
Post by: alexperkins on October 20, 2012, 06:58:17 pm
It wouldnt brick it

Use an official final release on a B or a C unit and youll have no issues. Such as this http://www.my-gti.com/3354/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-4020-4024-4026-4028 (http://www.my-gti.com/3354/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-4020-4024-4026-4028)

As long as you burn it at 1-2x on a good quality CD, and do not start the car and do not insert the key in the ignition itll upgrade just fine :)

Correct - you should update for the best results. You can go up to the latest on a Rev B or Rev C RNS with no problem. Get it here http://www.my-gti.com/3354/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-4020-4024-4026-4028 (http://www.my-gti.com/3354/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-4020-4024-4026-4028) and burn at a 1-2x speed

Looks like youve updated

I would do the firmware upgrade though to benefit from all the new features and the new POI database.

You will need to reload the maps again after however.

7920 and 7970 are both V9 maps

The difference between them, is that 7970 has all the speed cameras and red light cameras on it too  :happy2:

Just for the UK but it may be other countries

Have you turned it on in Setup > Map > Map Details > Car and Travel > Other > Speed Cameras

Slight hijack here-apologies.
My original RNS 510 'A' has 2760 firmware and V8 Maps which I updated last year courtesy of Carl's excellent guide. I've bought V9 Maps but am concerned the unit will fail or not work properly if V9 is loaded. Scott assures me otherwise but after reading this thread I'm not so sure.....
Anyone please?
Thanks

The risk is fairly low for updating maps

The worst thing that can happen is you loose your current map that is stored on the hard drive. This would happen if the DVD drive struggles to read all the info on the new map DVD. Some drives can be fussy what DVD brand they like.

As most disk that are available are copies from either ebay, friends or other forum members it is likely that some people will have issues.

I have a brand new unit at the minute that I have tried loads of copied dvds in and it fails to load the v9 maps, but as soon as I put the original V6 disk in it loads first time

Does it resolve the Bluetooth streaming issue?

Hi mate,

This is what I have done updated from FW2680  RNS510 C version to FW 4020 and no ill effects so you should be ok with the latest FW.

Not keen on the single file speed camera location on V9 maps though,I'll have to sort it out with some new speedcamera POI's .

Hope that helps.

I took the plunge and tried to upgrade my RNS 510 'A' running 2760 FW with V9 map data but it refuses to load. It doesn't ask me to save to the hard drive (it did once actually) and then either spits the disc out or brings up a disc error message.
It seems to be reading the data sometimes but just not saving it.  Is it because its such an early machine? Any ideas chaps?
Thanks.

What make of dvd are you using and did you burn it at a slow speed?
Apparently the disc likes to burnt bookmarked as dvd-rom for compatibality, something you can do with Nero of if your drive's firmware allows it.

Seconded

High quality DVD-DL such as verbatim burnt at 1x or 2x is the best approach

The disc was a Verbatim Dual Layer DVD+R I believe but it continually ejected itself and showed a disc error.  I've since burnt a TDK Dual Layer version and so far its staying in the machine at least.  Should I see some kind of progress bar? I pressed eject and it said it was downloading data with 'Eject' 'Notify' and 'Back' buttons below. Does this sound right?!
Thanks.

You'll only get speed cams if someone has modified the map.

Personally I prefer to use a virgin map and if I want to add POI's I can put them on SD.

The speed limits are tied with the map data from Navteq so its accuracy is determined by their data. V9 database is from Q1 2012.

After buying V9 maps and their absolute refusal to load, I tried again with a disc I burnt and success is mine! I'm still on FW2760 and unless someone tells me different, my Rev A RNS 510 can't have it's Firmware upgraded any further? Can't say I see many changes to the mapping and I wonder if I'm actually seeing less road name information.

As said at this time, any V9 map can't be genuine

only Eastern Europe is available as V9 which doesn't incude benelux, Uk, Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal

So I would guess any V9 advertised as V9 WE is a modified version of the Eastern V9 with the countries added to that

when the heck are they going to make speed cameras actually alert you on the RNS510.  they need to make some sort of tone when your approaching one.  else what the bloody point  :stupid:

im on version 8 and have my speed cameras setup.  all works fine so not going to bother yet with any upgrades to the maps
