Sorry if I'm not meant to be asking this, but has anyone got the new V9 maps installed?
-
Didn't even know V9 was out yet...
-
currently eastern europe
western europe soon, should be getting it soon, will post up version number when i have more info
-
Keep us posted Eddie!
-
Looks like the V9 West maps are floating around the internet now
-
Will be trying this tomorrow to see if the maps work. Holding thumbs.
-
Does anyone know what the additions are?
-
Just updated mine but RNS keeps stating it V7xxx. Will try again tomorrow, want to do a FW update too.
-
What disc did you copy it onto?
-
Verbatim DL written at slowest speed.
-
Mmmm interesting, I use Verbatim DL too. Haven't had a chance to try it as yet. Perhaps Ed can shed some light?
-
I did have to leave mine about 4/5 of the way through. Left the RNS on and the car unlocked, came back to it and there was no message to say complete or anything. What's the best state to leave the vehicle in during an update?
-
I usually hang around with the key in the ignition. Luckily it's right outside my workshop, so I carry on with other stuff while it's doing it's thing. The radio switches off after 20 minutes so could possibly cause an issue if not done by then and it switches off.
-
Put the disc in then it should ask if you want to save the maps or use off the disc. Tap save then wait a few mins and press the eject button. This will then show the progress bar.
-
I'll give it a try with the ignition on next time. Cheers chaps!
-
V9 maps in mine show V7970. This version has speed maps and traffic light cams too
-
I got to the point of it asking if i want to save to the HDD, left it a few mins and nothing happened so turned it off. Will have another bash tomorrow.
-
It copies in the background - takes about an hour in one hit, so I leave it in for the week whilst I drive :happy2:
You need to make sure your on a 39xx or 4xxx firmware for this to work properly
-
Dam it ! I've just bought v8 maps !
Ah well time to upgrade the upgrade !
-
I think im only on 2XXX but scared about updating incase it bricks!!! Will go into the secret menu to double check the maps and firmware
-
It wouldnt brick it
Use an official final release on a B or a C unit and youll have no issues. Such as this http://www.my-gti.com/3354/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-4020-4024-4026-4028 (http://www.my-gti.com/3354/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-4020-4024-4026-4028)
As long as you burn it at 1-2x on a good quality CD, and do not start the car and do not insert the key in the ignition itll upgrade just fine :)
-
Cheers
-
Anyone got a reliable link for the V9 map?
-
^^^ forbidden!
-
Bacillus, you should know better than asking about pirated software. You need to buy the OEM discs from VW.
-
I have 4020 firmware and v8 maps, can I just update to v9 maps or do i need update to higher firmware too.
-

Nope you can update to V9 maps with no probs!!!
Scott :happy2:
-
I take it as Im running 2760 with V7 I need to update the firmware and then the maps??
For the firmware what can I up date to as I know certain RNS's can only go to certain firmwares, mines an RNS Rev C LED so does anyone know what I can safely upgrade to?

Correct - you should update for the best results. You can go up to the latest on a Rev B or Rev C RNS with no problem. Get it here http://www.my-gti.com/3354/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-4020-4024-4026-4028 (http://www.my-gti.com/3354/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-4020-4024-4026-4028) and burn at a 1-2x speed
-

Looks like youve updated
I would do the firmware upgrade though to benefit from all the new features and the new POI database.
You will need to reload the maps again after however.
-
Any idea why yours is showing at V7970 but mines only V7920?
-
7920 and 7970 are both V9 maps
The difference between them, is that 7970 has all the speed cameras and red light cameras on it too :happy2:
-
Thanks Alex!
-
I installed the one with the speed cams, etc. but driving up the A3 yesterday past loads of cameras and not one blip on the map?? Are the cameras for UK too, or elsewhere?
-
Just for the UK but it may be other countries
Have you turned it on in Setup > Map > Map Details > Car and Travel > Other > Speed Cameras
-
Yep, definitely on in POI's. The speed and traffic light cameras are both on the list.
-
I found on mine I had to eject the disk, turn the POIs off then on again for them to come back as they vanished first time :happy2:
-
Interesting. I have tried rebooting mine, clearing them then choosing them again, then rebooting again, etc. Still nothing. It's all very annoying.

What firmware are you on?
-
Slight hijack here-apologies.
My original RNS 510 'A' has 2760 firmware and V8 Maps which I updated last year courtesy of Carl's excellent guide. I've bought V9 Maps but am concerned the unit will fail or not work properly if V9 is loaded. Scott assures me otherwise but after reading this thread I'm not so sure.....
Anyone please?
Thanks

The risk is fairly low for updating maps
The worst thing that can happen is you loose your current map that is stored on the hard drive. This would happen if the DVD drive struggles to read all the info on the new map DVD. Some drives can be fussy what DVD brand they like.
As most disk that are available are copies from either ebay, friends or other forum members it is likely that some people will have issues.
I have a brand new unit at the minute that I have tried loads of copied dvds in and it fails to load the v9 maps, but as soon as I put the original V6 disk in it loads first time
-
Interesting, how much are VW charging for the V9 disk & does it include the latest firmware update also?
Does it resolve the Bluetooth streaming issue?
-

What firmware are you on?
Running 5218, which I installed prior to updating the maps.

Successfully updated to 4120 and V9 maps. Any benefits on 5xxx firmware?
-
You get Radio text now on the 5xxx up firmware. Not sure of any other changes.

All seems to work fine, just don't get any cameras showing up.

Doesn't look very hopeful for me to see cameras etc

Hi mate,
This is what I have done updated from FW2680 RNS510 C version to FW 4020 and no ill effects so you should be ok with the latest FW.
Not keen on the single file speed camera location on V9 maps though,I'll have to sort it out with some new speedcamera POI's .
Hope that helps.

I have the radio text option with fw 4020...
-
Can anyone tell me if the firmware update is working with the 1Z0 035 729 B phone kit, there are reported problems and warnings not to update with this kit fitted.

If a radio station sends out extra info like song names etc, not all stations do it
-
I'll have a play with radio channels to see if there are any more info.
Thanks Nodz. :happy2:

Updated my firmware to 4120 and re installed V9 maps. Highlighted the speed cameras and traffic light cameras in POIs but they are not coming up on my map from scrolling the map around. My map version is still showing up as V7920 as well despite re installing after the new firmware
Also my bluetooth (5k0) doesnt seem to want to work anymore. Not had enough time to look at it properly though. Il try unplugging it and plugging it back in again
-
I took the plunge and tried to upgrade my RNS 510 'A' running 2760 FW with V9 map data but it refuses to load. It doesn't ask me to save to the hard drive (it did once actually) and then either spits the disc out or brings up a disc error message.
It seems to be reading the data sometimes but just not saving it. Is it because its such an early machine? Any ideas chaps?
Thanks.

What make of dvd are you using and did you burn it at a slow speed?
Apparently the disc likes to burnt bookmarked as dvd-rom for compatibality, something you can do with Nero of if your drive's firmware allows it.

Youll need to use the V7970 maps Joe - 7920 doesnt have speed cams

Seconded
High quality DVD-DL such as verbatim burnt at 1x or 2x is the best approach
-
The disc was a Verbatim Dual Layer DVD+R I believe but it continually ejected itself and showed a disc error. I've since burnt a TDK Dual Layer version and so far its staying in the machine at least. Should I see some kind of progress bar? I pressed eject and it said it was downloading data with 'Eject' 'Notify' and 'Back' buttons below. Does this sound right?!
Thanks.

Hi I have a rns 510 b version. With 2760 firmware.
If I updated to v9 maps would I get speed cameras on the maps? Also by updating the maps does this update the speed limits too?
Thanks for any help
-
You'll only get speed cams if someone has modified the map.
Personally I prefer to use a virgin map and if I want to add POI's I can put them on SD.

Have you ever tried getting the pocketgpsworld database on the RNS?
Can POIs beep or just visual warnings?
Ta
-
Yes commercially available databases can be used however so far as I am aware it's visual only.

cheers for your reply. Ive just seen the tutorial to add speed camera through sd card.
When I update to the latest maps will the speed limits also change? As a few roads and speed limits have changed and my rns 510 obviousoly doesnt know. Im unsure on what map version I have but found this on the secret menu... "Map version HDD 7551"
cheers for your help
-
The speed limits are tied with the map data from Navteq so its accuracy is determined by their data. V9 database is from Q1 2012.

After buying V9 maps and their absolute refusal to load, I tried again with a disc I burnt and success is mine! I'm still on FW2760 and unless someone tells me different, my Rev A RNS 510 can't have it's Firmware upgraded any further? Can't say I see many changes to the mapping and I wonder if I'm actually seeing less road name information.
Interested to hear comments.
Thanks for your help.

As said at this time, any V9 map can't be genuine
only Eastern Europe is available as V9 which doesn't incude benelux, Uk, Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal
So I would guess any V9 advertised as V9 WE is a modified version of the Eastern V9 with the countries added to that
-
when the heck are they going to make speed cameras actually alert you on the RNS510. they need to make some sort of tone when your approaching one. else what the bloody point :stupid:
im on version 8 and have my speed cameras setup. all works fine so not going to bother yet with any upgrades to the maps

I put 3810 on an A last week. No issues at all and have done 500 miles since then.
It'd wipe your HDD as a third partition is created, but I think there's tools to retain info
-
successfully installed on RNS B unit with FW 3810, all POS and cameras work fine

Likewise a +1 from me...3810a installed on a B unit. Now reports as being a Version D.
On the maps, i have V9 installed which i did yesterday. Revision 7920 Western Euro. :happy2:
