Hi,
I am thinking about making my car awd, 400bhp though fwd+ diff is still rather silly :driver:
I already have a s3 gearbox and rear diff what else would you need and would it be possible? ( is there enough space?)
Cheers
-
you need to speak to vRS_Alex.
-
i would think you would need a whole new floor plan and a haladex system out of the r32 ? Alot of work i would imagine , and at quite some cost
-
I'd imagine it would be cheaper to start with an S3 or Golf R.
There are not many examples of people AWD'ing their car because it requires basically the whole rear end to be cut out and a new floor welded, along with all the parts, paint, electrics etc.
-
i thought the floor plan was the same?

The back isnt....
-
when looking at pics i thought i would just need a fuel tank, looks like there is loads of space under there
-
this sounds very intresting 4wd gti sounds good
-
you need to speak to vRS_Alex.
:happy2: I'm sure It can be done. I recall Simon from VagCo mentioning that he used to convert cars from 2WD to AWD all the time, along with manual to dsg conversions.
-
i see the r32 mk5 has no spare wheel, so would i just need to weld that up?
my only real problem is the electrical side of things :chicken:
-
this has been done by Alan fishburn in Darlington who is a revo dealer--Turbotrev know him well
-
It was in a VW mag a few months ago... If anybody had any pictures of the sparewheel well of an R32 mk5 and maybe the underside of it too...
That could maybe help! :happy2:
The R32 has it's battery in the boot, which mean's the rear floor layout must be different....
The R32 fuel tank would be a must as the rear diff etc needs to run threw that way...
Stevo at stallers seems to be the man, i read on a post a short time ago he had some spare 4wd parts :happy2:
-
Floor plan is th same. SteveP has been looking into this and he has taken out the spare wheel section in his so it should fit no problem. He can help with the details or try KPM, who i think have been encouraging him to take the plunge.
-
Ask me in a dew days
The floor pan mounting points are the same, just needs the spare wheel housing removing and some mounts welding onto the tunnel for the prop.
Wiring isnt a problem. Best bet is to buy a full rear end so you get the shafts, diff, hubs, subframe etc.
-
You need the haldex controller, but yes the boot is the same but stores the battery and has no well... but you might aswell move the battery at the same time ;)
Rest is bolt on stuff... been looking into this since reading about it in a VW magazine I saw at a dealer...
Mk5 Golf R anyone? :pomppomp:
-
Would work out cheaper than buying a golf r

Would work out cheaper than buying a golf r
or buying a 4motion and swapping the engine over possibly...

Got some TTRS rear hubs shiney too!
Gives 10mm more rear track and weigh the same as a family pack of maltesers....
-
How does the propshaft attach to a 2wd gearbox?

How does the propshaft attach to a 2wd gearbox?
he has the s3 gearbox which is 4wd
-
Te chap in VW Driver got hold of a crash damaged A3 TDI Quattro and moved the running gear onto the golf. Spare wheel well only obstacle it seems
-
That seems like an awful lot of work to make a gti perform like a TT!

The exhaust is going to be different. The ARB's different to fit round the haldex gear. The ESP/ABS needs to be recoded and some different parts possibly.
New fuel tank to fit round the cut up boot.
Rear needs haldex controller and reader diff /diff carrier with left and right drivesharts and hubs and rear subframe. Front needs the transfer box propshafts and mountings for propshaft but not necessarily a different gearbox.
and haldex loom too going to ECU.

I think Allan will sell his VW Driver featured car if anyone is interested? I'll ask him tomorrow and post the price, but I'm pretty sure he wants less than
£8k.
Just spoken to him, he'll take £5k firm for it.
-
looked into it, dont look that hard really. got most of the parts.
I will get it ready for the new year. :driver:
-
Go for it James :happy2:
-
Be great if you could document the conversion James.
-
If anyone is interested in Allan's VW Driver featured 4wd Mk5 GTI it's available for a bargain £5k firm.
He's available on 01325 383860 Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning (business hours) or 01642 551835 (evenings).

5k ? whats up with it .. what power is it running ? :scared:
-
I thought he had Revo Stage 2+ on it.
-
thats the bargin of the century then ! :surprised:
-
Currently the engine is standard apart from a carbonio style intake. Allan's your man if anyone wants the history and spec of the car. :happy2:
