Title: Winter tyre question.
Post by: swgti on October 11, 2012, 01:46:42 pm
Obviously a full set of 4 is going to give optimum performance but does anyone just run the fronts on winter tyres for that little bit of extra grip ??? Not looking at them for the Golf but was contemplating them on our Passat as 15ins are a lot cheaper that 18's
Would having them on the front and std on the rears casue any problems?

If I was to choose, I'd say it more inportant to put 2 winters on the rear over the front as the back end is more likely to step out.

But I'm sure someone with more knowledge be around soon.

I have had 2 on just the front and whilst it makes the car pretty unstoppable in the snow, I did get hit with snap oversteer on one occasion. It could of ended up pretty nasty but I was on a very wide sweeping bend and ended up parked parallel to a bench facing the opposite direction  :driver:

If you do just put them on the front then be very careful.... otherwise if possible go for all 4  :drinking:

i think it should be all 4, but if you are just going to do 2 has to be the back as per previous reply.

Yeap, all 4 or not at all. Today's "everyday" tyres are very good in all conditions so as long as your rubber is in tip top shape you'll be fine.

I had just the front two done but then again I was dragged up on RWD so used to a bit of oversteer. I'd rather have the rear stepping out over the front not stopping or turning.

Alot easier to control if the front skids and harder if the rear skids is what the manufactures say. So they say best tyres on rear.

All 4 winters or none at all, your just asking for problems if you start doing 2. They have a lot more grip in poor conditions so the car would be inbalanced.

Definitely all 4 or nothing at all.  You put only two on and have a crash, which you properly will!, and I bet your insurance company will fail to pay out.
