Generally my cars always in D, only use manual mode in traffic free open stretches where I can really make the most of it & enjoy it. Sports only used for flat out acceleration on straights.
-
I drive it in M Mode and always in D when in traffic, S mode very rarely
-
Generally drive in M, D in traffic. Sometimes in Sport but not that often.

.
Always D through towns/urban and also traffic crawls, then always M as my shoulders become level with the actual NSL sign (aka GLF sign) and 'think manual'. I occasionally use S on busy multi-junction roundabouts or on slip roads joining M-ways etc.
I always use the paddle shifters (mine have extensions) when in M and never nudge the floor stick. I sometimes override D or S momentarily with the paddle shifters.
I have Cruise Control but never ever use it - It just doesn't feel right and I hate it! I don't want to accelerate without an instruction from my brain to my right foot. Equally I would hate brake-assist etc.
I wouldn't buy another car without either DSG or its equivalent - It's the best of all worlds, in my opinion.
-
I always just leave mine in D. Occasionally use the paddles and rarely use sport. I like using the shifter. As Robin says, I too wouldn't buy another car without DSG or similar.
-
Ive came from a Manual GTI to DSG edition 30 with 300bhp and do have to say the DSG helps a huge amount. Would be a lot of work in a manual car lol. Takes some getting used to DSG but I'm getting there
I think D mode is very well judged. Sport is very aggressive, sometimes even dropping down to 1st gear for slow turns lol. Guess thats a real sport mode tho...!
Do people slot into N when parked at traffic lights or Just leave in D?
-
I read somewhere that putting the DSG into N stops the oil circulating in the gearbox and is generally a bad thing...
-
Do people slot into N when parked at traffic lights or Just leave in D?
....For about the first 90,000 miles I have always left it in D but have more recently started to occasionally slot into N but it depends if I know the traffic lights and that they stay red for some time. It has been discussed on the forum in the past and people have opposing views about it. I'm now at 104k miles.
Also, I never use the handbrake except when parking and even then, not in my garage (so the brake pads don't stick to the discs when they're wet).
-
Is slotting into N meant to have negative effects on the box? Like yourself I only slot into N when I know lights are gonna be red for a few mins
While I'm here u wouldn't have the part number for the front subframe bolt and spacer mod would u? Had a search and can't find it.... :happy2:

Where did u read this? Anyone confirm if this is correct?
-
Am only just starting to get to know how to use the dsg gbox but like many have said use sport for slip roads etc as it feels like the throttle response is a little quicker the rest of the time it's D all the way with occasional overriding! M mode is that to the side of the D mode ie sequential?
Does anyone have spinning of the front wheels on pull off if attempting to accelerate quickly? ESP doesn't seem to override!

Sounds like bollocks to me. :stupid:

Think this only applies to when towing the car hence the need for a low loader.

Read it somewhere in this forum. May well be incorrect.

I think what you are referring to is moving the car without the engine running, that is a no no with a DSG car.
-
I generally keep it in D and change to M when I have some open road. S mode is hardly used as it is very aggressive.
I also usually put it into N when stopped at lights that I have seen go red as they usually take a while to change back. Didn't think this would be bad for the box.
-
D if I'm driving Miss Daisy, manual if I'm pressing on. Never S.
-
/\ /\ /\ /\
D mode most of the time and stick shift when pushing on a bit... S mode very rare. Paddles now and then. I find a bit of throttle away from the lights in D mode tends to make it hold the gear longer anyway.
I also tend to drop it into N when standing for any amount of time, I think you can feel a bit of load coming off the engine... maybe just me....
A cracking box

Yes I feel that also. I think in D is sits on the biting point which I don't think is good if you are stopped for a few mins.
Can anyone confirm this?

Guys, I have a diesel 170 with DSG its my first Diesel and first DSG,
Usually use it in D put into S I find it over revs as if the diesel power is lower than 4.5k rpm,
When in M I change about 3.75/4k rpm just getting use to the difference as I had a rev happy clio 197 before.
Can anyone recommend the best power bracket for the diesels ie when to manually change.
Another thing paddles..... Would I be able to get these fitted mine doesnt have them, didnt realise they did paddles?
Thanks
Matt

there is referance to this topic in the handbook , some thing about a lack of oil

....Whereabaouts in the GTI Handbook please? - I have jsut looked and found no such reference.

page 169 , if the car is allowed to roll with out the engine running it will cause damage , think it says it N but not 100percent
-
D= Driving Miss Daisy
S= sh*t mode
M= Man mode

....Yes I read that. My misunderstanding - I thought you were referring to the DSG oil in N when the car wasn't moving suach as at traffic lights. It appears that it's only when the car is moving and in N that there is potential for damage. I think it's to do with DSG oil temperature.
-
D for crusing (95% of the time), M mode when I am pressing on :happy2:
-
It says in the manual not to move the car while the engine is switched off as there is no oil circulating the gearbox. I have knocked it into n before while driving forgetting I was in d using the paddles and trying to Change up while the wheel was turned as I couldn't reach the paddle so pushed up and it knocked into neutral, I've done this a few times and one time when I scanned my car with vag com it had a fault saying driving the car in neutral or something similar don't know if that is what caused the fault but I just avoid neutral unless I'm stopped for a long time and even then I'll probably put it in p, back to the original question I drive in d mode for most driving about town and motorway but when ever I want to drive hard it's in manual, I just feel d or s mode you have no control or engine breaking and s mode can drop gears mid corner and upset the handling

I'm surprised how many folks here are reporting that they drive so much in D and then only use M for more spirited driving. It's as if they drive their car like it was a conventional automatic transmission and only use M occasionally.
I prefer to primarily 'Think Manual' and use my DSG gearbox in M as if it was a conventional manual transmission. Consequently I only use D in slow traffic jam crawls and through urban 30/40 limit areas.
For about the first 10,000 miles I used to only use D and S because I didn't like the OEM tiny paddle shifters. Driving has much more control in M and my high performance car instructor taught me never to use D except in the way I do now. By staying in M you are able to instantly select a gear either up or down with merely a finger and achieve the optimum gear for the current conditions.
Listening to your engine revs is key. It's why I hate driving over-soundproofed cars and I never play music/radio while driving.
It's probably why I very rarely see more than 28 mpg but it's more enjoyable.

I'd love to drive my car in manual mode all the time but unfortunately I would get about 15mpg cos I would never be below 3k rpm v6 noise is far too addictive lol
-
90% of the time im just commuting in D, then use M when i actually fancy 'driving'. S mode is just cr4p, so i literally never use it.
If im stopped for anything over 3-5 seconds or so i put it into neutral, otherwise its just like holding a manual car on the clutch, which surely is bad?

I do drive my ED30 like it's an Auto most of the time :ashamed:, (Part of the reason I got DSG), the other bit is I can change gear when I want to the other small amount of time, best of both worlds. :happy2:
I do NOT miss the clutch in slow moving traffic or stop start traffic or when I am pootling off the Golf Club. :signLOL:
-
Have only had my car a couple of weeks so it could be to do with that bit does anyone else get wheelspin on acceleration (maybe hard acceleration) from standing?
-
You have to learn how to control the DSG box when making fast launches. Its not just a case of nailing the throttle and hanging on for dear life!

In my old Ed30 it would wheelspin for fun, especially in anything remotely damp, but the R32 has more grip than power, simply floor it and go.

....As far as I can tell from reading, holding it in D with a foot on the brake is not the same as holding it on the bite of a conventional clutch system. The action of using the brake pedal sends instructions to the DSG box of tricks. I think it's similar to how the Hill Assist feature works and that is definitely a DSG feature which does no potential damage.
We have to realise that the DSG is a new generation of technology and not just a glorified conventional automatic nor conventional manual transmission.

....So true!! It happens to me every time I drive a V6! Where's the nearest V-Power pump? :happy2:
-
I drove it in D nearly all the time for the first month I had the car,
but I always use manual now, even in traffic.
My consumption took a hit but D is just so bland in comparison
I never use s, havent had a drag race yet lol!
