Hello all
I'm sure it been asked on here before, but I've searched and can't find it! Which is better......
It's always around this time of year ,when FWD gets a bit frustrating, especially when it's stage 1. It doesn't help with Hurdy's build thread, and the performance he's getting out of the same engine but the added bonus of 4wd. So in the last couple of weeks I've been looking at R's. However the GTI has every option bar suspension and roof, and I can find anything to match that's reasonably priced. So that's led me to the RS3.......alright I might not be able to get a fully loaded one but I can buy a month old car for £3k7 ish. I always finance my cars through my work, and due to the strong residuals I'm sure it's not going to be much difference to a £30k R.
I haven't driven either, so I will welcome any input before I go test driving......will the RS be as strong residual wise, as say my old B7 RS4, or will it even feel a proper RS when compared??
Cheers in advance :happy2:

iv just bought a used r , awsome car with dsg ,but the rs3 is pretty mint ,just make sure you get bucket seats

That's S3 isn't it? Not RS3
And to add to my opening of the thread, I've got a demo on the M135 coming up, which looks to be the performance bargain of them all, but not 4wd........
All thoughts welcome

The M135i seems to be a revelation. Every review I've read on it has raved about it.

It does seem that way doesn't it. I've priced it up and it comes out quite reasonably under £34k fully loaded with 10+% discount.

ttrs ?

ttrs ?
Needs to be 5 door. Wife uses it to ferry kids about, and there is three of them!
-
thats knocks a few cars out them including the 1m ....What about a edition 35
-
Rs3 is heavier than the Golf R but maps straight to 400hp.
Even stge 2 plus golf R vs stock RS3, the golf will be quicker till about 100 then the rs3 extra capacity and cylinder takes over. Both are a piece of piss to drive.
Residuals won't be as good as the b7 rs4 if the TTRS is anything to go by.

She has an Ed35 at the moment. I tried a 1M around Brands and over it, but only 3 door and manual - it's got to be auto and 5 door

Have no not just taken delivery of a 35?

300 for a set of front discs. They are wank, but aftermarket solution has been developed.

,
Those who have driven both the Golf R and RS3 say that the Golf R is a more fulfilling and exciting drive. The Audi interior will feel more luxurious but the Golf R will feel more alive to drive. Only way to decide is a decent length of test drive of each, preferably on the same roads.

How does the M135i compare price-wise to the RS3? Must be a decent chunk cheaper?
Chris Harris will have a video report on Pistonheads of the M135i next week - sounds like he's enjoyed it a lot!

Nice!

Each to their own but RS3 will always be my bet because I love efortless drive even if a bit tame. Its all about enjoying the drive not going sideways round the roundabouts for someone who dont even know how to do it properly besides why would you do it on public roads for?
-
Haha, so you've basically just said you'd prefer a car that is boring to drive?
Each to their own indeed
-
wouldnt call a rs3 boring! the 1 series is hardly a go kart either!
-
Your ed35 is so nice. But would have to be RS3 if I had the choice.
How is the 35 driving then
-
Had a good play in the Ed35 today, really good fun and quick on dry roads. However I'm sure it was wheel spinning above 60mph..........on stage 1 (this might have been yesterday when the roads were damp though).
Off to see an RS3 tomorrow.......

Passed an RS3 on way to manchester Airport yesterday afternoon, was not sure if it was RS3 or S3 until we got close enough to see the badges, on that basis I would choose the Golf R and spend £3K of the £10K saving on some mods :happy2:

Yes that is one of my main issues with the current Audi A3's. The difference, in terms of looks, between a TDI S-line, S3 and RS3 is not enough.
Obviously others will think this is a good thing but not IMO.

I had a good 20minute test drive today in a 62 plate with 2500 miles on it, from five oaks Audi. It was a very basic spec, but quite competitive at £38991. I turned up open minded, not wanted to like what in my eyes was quite a dated A3 with a nice lairy engine.......
From the moment it started I was impressed, memories of my RS4 came flooding back. On the road it felt very composed, whilst driving normally to warm it up, suspension is hard but very compliment, and the exhaust noise was lovely. Once it had warmed up, I pushed the lever in manual mode, and flicked the paddle back into 2nd gear at approx 35 mph and floored the throttle....OMG, what a noise and the acceleration is just ferocious, and the grip, on the occasionally damp roads, was unbelievable. Having only covered 2500 the engine felt tight, and I'm sure with another 10,000 miles under the bonnet, it would loosen up nicely. The test drive lasted 25 minutes or so, covering a number of different roads, of fairly hard driving, but never above 3 figures, and I was suitably impressed at the end to see the mpg around the 23 mark! Not far off what the Ed35 would be. Cruising on the motorway at approx 75-80 was very relaxed due to the 7th gear. And on the subject of gearboxes in manual mode it will happily bounce of off the rev limiter until you flick the paddle - it was nice to have full control.
What I car, I want one, I'm feeling the Ed35 will go up for sale first thing tomorrow, but I'd also like to drive the M135, which I've got coming in a couple of weeks, but I just don't know how it will better the RS3. Coupled with the great residuals, the RS3 could be quite e performance car bargain for me.
Spec wise, what do I want?;
Colour - Misano red, Daytona grey or white (loving Misano best, which is strange as I've never been a red car fan)
Bose
Rain and light pack - used to it on previous cars
Interior light pack - nice to have
Matt aluminium styling pack - in my view finishes off the front of the car
Buckets would be nice but not essential
Titanium wheels, although I could refurb other colours to match
Cruise - although this can be added
Privacy - not essential though, as my youngest is now 3.
Adaptive headlights - because I'm used to them, although I do very little night driving
Electric folding mirrors
To be fair looking back on that list, it looks like I'd be happy with a fairly basic spec! Haha
Anyone want to buy a fully loaded (bar sunroof and suspension) Golf GTI Edition 35 5 door DSG with 9000 miles?...........
-
IIRC the rs3's come pretty well specced as standard

Interesting video. Is Chris being paid by BMW, as he rarely says a nice thing about the RS3. I actually think he comes accross as a bit of a cock in that video. The RS3 has got pretty good reviews elsewhere.....he just doesn't seem to want to drive the RS, just understeer (exaggerating) it everywhere. It was quicker though??
Anyway that M135i doess look interesting and it is on the short list, however it's not an RS model, and I love the RS models. Still I think a test drive is in order.....
-

It's had a fair amount of negative reviews too though... To be honest I can't remember reading a really good review of it, other than from people on VAG forums...
-
The best thing about the RS3 is that you can let your wife loose in it whilst she has the kids, and you know that they will be safe. Nice and easy to drive brisk with the quattro, grip and dual clutch tranny. :signLOL:
-
Agreed with Andrew, and I'm talking from someone looking to get one, so slightly biased, but it was completely negative, with hardly a positive word.
Anyway just my tuppence as always. Lucky we are all different

And I think that is quite a lot of the attraction for me, that and the residuals are looking very good on it.

Agree 100%, I let my GF drive APRs GolfR for example in the winter simply because of how easy it is drive. Its obviously something that needs to be thought of when buying a car that the partner will also use! VAG's just make the perfect all rounder IMO.
-
Really looking forward to your opinion on the M135i when you drive one Oli.

Should be in the next few weeks. It sounds amazing on the video. I loved the 1M when I drive it round Brands. Just wouldn't work for the wife -manual, 3 doors and only a four seater!
-
That's how car reviews should be ! Chris Harris should have have his own show and you know what I think I've decided what I'm buying next, that car with a diff will be epic !
