Title: smoked chrome monzas [ NOW DONE!]
Post by: homesqueeze on October 15, 2012, 07:56:10 pm
I have finally found a decent local place to get my Monza 2's refurbed. I am getting them painted rather than diamond cut again. I have seen pics of smoked chrome on here and that is what I would like. The wheel place say they can do smoked chrome for me and have even made up a sample. I like it, but they did say that because it is a unique effect and some mixing quantities are done by hand that each wheel will look slightly different. It shouldn't be major, but they just can't get an exact match as the smoke darknes may vary slightly on each wheel.
I just wanted to know what other people who have had this colour done think about it. Are you happy with the effect? Would be especially interested to know what you think if you have a metallic black car like mine.

Hi guys

There may be some helpful info and pics in this thread:  http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,726.0.html

I had my genuine Monza 18's powdercoated Smoked Chrome but there isn't any obvious differences in appearance between each wheel.

I think I've mentioned this before?…... I've also toyed with the idea of painting my Monza's.

I'd go for the Brightest Lightest Silver available (almost white)  :happy2:

Im only saying this because sometimes in certain light my Monza's would almost look like a painted finish

I think mine has some pictures around somewhere. I did it and liked it. All the wheels looked the same to me.

I had a similar effect on the alloys I had on my Z4M. The colour differences were only really noticeable when I had neglected to wash the car.. so mostly in the winter.

Otherwise, looks wicked.

I only ran on mine for a year because I bought the OZ Alleggerita lightweights (Monza 11Kg, LeggyRita 8Kg), but my Smoked Chrome looks different in different lights:

I was going to sell them but I like them so much although they haven't been out of their boxes for several years now. I think I will display one on my bedroom wall so at least I can still enjoy them.

Thanks guys. I'm 99.9% decided on the smoked chrome finish. Just gonna pop in to the refurbers tommorow and look at the sample wheel they made up for me and check I'm sure I like it.
I think the difference in each wheel will be barely noticeable to me. The guy doing the refurb just explained that because he is a perfectionist, whatever he does for me he will be able to spot a slight difference in them.

If you need convincing the other 0.01%, here's my experience: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,42652.msg497139.html#msg497139 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,42652.msg497139.html#msg497139)

Mine were done by hand, too and there's no visible difference.  Do it!  (And then post some pics so us saddos enthusiasts can admire!)

Thanks SRC and Chowgar, those wheels are looking nice! Convinced now anyway. I went to see the smoked chrome test wheel they made up for me today. It was slightly darker than the wheels on here, but they have said they can lighten it up a little for my wheels. Anyway, I was happy with what I saw and I'm booked in for Tuesday. They are even going to get it all done in a day! I can't wait!
Pics of course as soon as I get the chance.

Got my wheels done today! I'm really pleased with the smoked chrome, it looks great! It's a strange look because it changes colour and appearance according to the angle you view it at and the way the light shines on it. This makes it hard to get an accurate photo, but here are some anyway:

Those look very nice indeed! Much darker than my version of 'Smoked Chrome' done by A1 Wolverhampton.

Thanks, I'm well chuffed! They are darker than all the other ones I've seen here, but I think they go nicely with a black car.

....Probably best to go to a specialist to powdercoat rather than just paint spray.

It's a blend of colours really that they use to achieve that effect. I would think any professional wheel refurber should be able to do this. However, the way they mix the colours will be down to the individuals interpretation of how it should be. It might look different depending on who does it. You should be able able to request how light or dark you want it though and they can tailor it to your preference. They might even spray up a sample wheel for you, like they did for me. It's probably nowhere near you, but I got it done at Silver Wheels in Ferndown.

Hi DR, my Monza's are not painted on the face the are just polished and clear coated. I said in the post I've been toying with the idea of painting em a really bright, sort of white Silver.

Hi Pete,
The Monza's are tucked away.
I want to get the front wheel refurbed down at A1 wheels.
I might consider selling soon. I'm after some 18" Track wheels.

(....I normally use them as winters)  :ashamed:

Polished and clear coated? anyone else had this done? i need my 18" monza 2's refurbed but don't really fancy painting them as it seems to take that sharpness away. Personally i think they are the nicest non diamond cut refurbs I've ever seen! Where did you get that done? Is it a DIY job?
