Title: Need Help!! No power to stereo!
Post by: CMB on October 17, 2012, 02:38:22 pm
All the parts came today to fit my old single DIN stereo into my MK5 GTI, this is the wiring harness i bought;
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/con-ct20vw01-ct20vw01-harness-adapter-vw-passatgolftouaregtouran.html

It all seems to fit but I'm not getting any power to the stereo at all, there is a 12V switched wire thats just hanging around but surely that doesn't HAVE to be plugged into something (fusebox etc.) thats just so it switches off with the ignition isn't it, without that wired in i should still be getting power through the constant 12V shouldn't i?

Cars in bits and I'm going back to uni today so its a long drive, going to be made even longer if i don't have music :(

With vehicles that have the new Fakra or Quadlock connection that features a small lever to make the connection, there is no ignition switched 12v supply. This is usually required for aftermarket head units, and they won't power up with out this being connected.

To resolve the issue, you will need to be technically competent to a small level. You will need to connect the red wire to an ignition switched 12v supply from the fuse box of the vehicle. One such supply would be that which feeds the cigar lighter for example. You may require an electrical test meter to determine the relevant contact.

Once the red wire has been connected securely and professionally to a +12v ignition switched supply, the rest of the installation is straight forward.

Cheers mate sorted it, i didn't think the 12V switched HAD to be wired up i thought it was just if you wanted it to switch off with the ignition but your right it has to be wired to something, at the minute its not wired up to a switched supply as it doesn't run off, will this run the battery down even if i remember to knock the radio off or wil it still kill the battery is the radio is off?
Cheers

There is a potential battery drain issue when you put a golf mk6 stereo into a golf mk5 due to the canbus controller. I would be worried if I had a permanent live going to a stereo all of the time whether I am in the car or not, all day and night. With the switched live I know that as soon as I turn the ignition off no power is going to the stereo so there are no issues, safety, battery drain or otherwise.
