Title: Do you trust your missus with the GTI?
Post by: Homer on October 20, 2012, 02:08:59 pm
My missus has been asking for ages to drive the GTI, she aint the best of drivers so I have been avoiding her driving it explaining she has her own car and as she is not a named driver on my policy it would be too big a risk for her to drive it 3rd party....

Now however she seems to be determined to start driving it, I must have hyped it up too much...I will put her on policy before I let her drive it but for some reason still find the thought of parting with my keys rather difficult.

Anyone else went through anything similar?

I had my missus insured on my old car and she drove it....... once in a year. Now she isnt insured on my car and doesnt want to drive mine as she knows I would go mental if she did anything to it!!  :driver:

I never did but as of Monday the missus will be using my car for her work for the next 5 weeks until her mini jcw is built.  We managed to sell her old one privately and had to take the cash now rather than risking having to part ex when her new car is delivered.

So my normal 5 miles a week will be 300 for the next 5 weeks :scared:

My Mrs drives my car better than I do and I'm happy to admit it.

She is however a semi professional racing driver and is more used to thrashing caterhams and Porsches about up and down the country and blasting through forests when indulging in rallying.

People are more important than metal.  Why not invest in some driver training for her?  To save making it sound too patronising, go with her.  There's plenty on offer out there.  IAM can be a bit old-farty (IMHO, no offence to anyone here and all that), but it's a good place to start and good value.  You could always say it's a way of getting cheaper insurance (which is true).

I have no choice as I am in Afghan for 4 months and I don't want it stuck on the driveway not going anywhere, and I trust her. In fact she has started to enjoy driving it as she used to moan when she was a passenger. Spoke to her the other day and she said it is pretty quick isn't it

Will be even quicker when I get back and hopefully book it in at R-tech for Stage 1 :happy2: :happy2:

Only reason I'll be letting my misses drive mine will be because if she's on the policy she brings my insurance down and gets it cheaper because she works at Adrian flux's insurance.

That is the only reason  :happy2:

My missus drives it all the time (stage1 eddy) approx 25 miles a day by the time she ferries our daughter about and gets to work and back. I only really get to drive it on a weekend as work long hours during the week. had it well over a year now so doesnt bother me. she did slightly kerb a wheel but paid for a full refurb so cant argue with that  :happy2:

Great thread only thing mrs w lacks is some special awareness when it comes to kerbs in multi storey car parks, other than that she drives the door handles off her Pirelli, she now drives the ed35 but I did not cover her for business use given the special awareness issue to avoid arguments

Where are all of you male drivers? :P

It's not my wife I worry about (who doesn't drive and has no inclination to), its one of my daughters who is learning to drive and wants the keys in her sticky mitts when (or if) she passes!  :scared:

.
I wouldn't let my ex-missus drive my car. She had her own and her driving is erratic and she lacks confidence (refuses to drive on motorways for example). Every one of her cars (old Ford Focus) since we divorced has bodywork damage. I worry on the odd occasion when our daughter is passenger in her car.

My daughter has passed her test 3 years ago but currently has no need for a car and so has not enough experience to drive a GTI. She is an excellent calm passenger at all speeds and conditions but expresses no desire to drive mine.

TBH she drives it more than I do as I walk to work, she absolutely loves it as much as I do so know she'd never be careless in it and when it did get scraped it was parked up at the police station!
Saying that I only allow her to drive it Mondays and Fridays which isnt nursery drop off day, its carnage outseide that place on a morning. I'm trying to keep the miles down also now that its hit 80k.

....I was exactly the same when mine hit 80k miles. But then enjoying the car and covering mileage was inevitable and as soon as she hit 100k miles I relaxed. If she (the car) is well maintained you shouldn't have a worry about the mileage.

My other half has drove most of the cars i have owned since she passed her test. She drives the Pirelli more than me,every day infact. She's getting track driving lessons for her christmas this year as she has a extremely heavy right foot. The only car i refused to let her drive is my Edition One.

Man, you fellas need to get petrolhead girlfriends!  :P I don't like my boyfriend driving my car, but that's just because I always want to drive it, and we mainly go everywhere in his company car to save the miles on mine... If ever my boyfriend or my brother drive my car (brother only to move it off the drive before cleaning his car) they are hilariously careful with it, as they know what would happen if the slightest kerbing of a wheel occurred   Though the boyf is a petrolhead too so I'm happy most of the time... apart from when he's in a 'get the back out on EVERY roundabout' mood in the Beema and I'm being chucked all over the place  :signLOL:

Well after 5 days of the missus using my car, it has a mark where she has opened the door onto the white plastic electricity box next my house, a few more stone chips and part of the interior has dropped out under the dashboard.  I might rent her a car for the next 3 weeks, anyone know who's cheapest??

The Bird is asking to be insured on mine and totally been avoiding it but now im renewal is up its every day... if it brings it down then fine but I dont know if I can trust her with it haha

She is a good driver, gets it from her dad, BUT she cant concentrate the whole time and if she loses concentration while trying to park it and kerbs an alloy one would not be too happy to say the least!

I let my boyfriend drive my Edition 30.  It ended up in him selling his Passat estate and buying an A4 with go faster goodies because he wanted something faster after driving mine.  I'm insured on his T4 camper and drove it 800 miles round France recently.  I even drove it first on arrival in Calais to show him how it's done on the other side of the road.  He's got no problems with me driving his vehicles because he knows I'll take care of them and can actually drive properly at a standard better than most women :driver:

I don't have to worry about my mrs - she doesn't drive! I have to worry about my sister. Lent her my car once - phaeton rims are new - warned her not to try driving into spaces or reverse park my car. Just go for spaces you can drive straight into - like a supermarket etc. car came back after 50 minutes with a shattered alloy - her reply was "it's only a car!" - I was so tempted to push her daughter over and say "it's only your child!" (But I didn't) I sent my parents her bill! They made her source another rim!

....With my 'Dad'* hat on, she needs to be very careful - She may benefit hugely from a course in roadcraft or a day with John Cave at Drivetrain (in your car) which teaches roadcraft and high performance car driving - He's a top notch Police Instructor. It's a matter of learning both your vehicle's limits and your own limits.

* I am a 'Dad' who doesn't drive like a granny as many here will testify.

Having done the Drivetrain course myself, I apply what I have learnt to every vehicle I drive and am not phased by driving much higher performance cars than my own. Remapping your driving brain is the best mod you can do.

Have Fun but Safe Journeys.

I didn't trust the ex with our old shadow blue. The diamond cut Monza's were regularly used inconjunction with the kerb as a secondary braking system. She was known on here as 'The Kerbinator'.

It broke my heart every time she came in all sheeepish, being suspiciously nice to me. I'd say: "You've kerbed it again, haven't you?" She was very fit with blond hair and a cracking set of cans, so she usually got away with it!  :signLOL:

My Mrs' has been insured on my car for a few years now, was on my old Audi TT 225, on my Derv Bora & now on my GTi, tbh honest she avoids pot holes and speed bumps so thats a result but she seems to enjoy the noise from the exhaust a little to much. if somethings to happen its insured I guess doh!!

it has been known that she beat me at go karting a few months back and beat a few of my mates too lol
