New Apple kit.
http://live.theverge.com/apple-ipad-mini-live-blog/
-
Watched it on my AppleTV, at last a use for it without a jailbreak
iPad 3 now obsolete after only 6 months opps
Roll on Friday when I can preorder my ipad mini
-
Watched live stream on my iPad via HDMI cable.
Just ordered my new Mac mini. Getting the wife an iPad mini pre ordered on Friday.
Little bit disappointed about the iPad 3 being obsolete and discontinued, but its not a problem. I have no issues with it running like a dream.
-
The new iMac looks lovely, but I can't say I'm blown away by the specs on it. I'd have really like to have seen Flash storage as standard. It's all about the screen and the graphics.
Love the look of the iPad Mini too - my 3-year-old keeps nicking mine and my wife's, but I'm struggling with the idea of getting him one. Maybe a bit too young!
-
Never really saw a practical use for the ipad until the last few trips at work, this place has about 12 of them just there for people to use at dinner, or leisure time, and I can finally see a use for one!
Thinking of getting the ipad mini, just for the uber convenience of it rather than lugging about my laptop.
-
.
I can see the benefits of the iPad Mini but it depends what you use an iPad for and I would definitely want to keep the larger size screen of my iPad 2.
The new specs on the iMac don't seem that much different from the one I already have. There still aren't many Thunderbolt peripheral devices yet.
-
Reckon the iPad mini would look great integrated into the Centre console..
So when is it actually out to buy?

Pre order begins on Friday. Im odering a 16gb in white/silver for the wife at 8am! ;)

I hope the owners of 4g iPad 3's get a free upgrade to the new version that will be compatible with uk 4g like they did with the original iPhone to iphone 3G.
Out dating something after 6 months does take the piss though.
I'm still having major issues with my iPhone 5 my 4th replacement is on its way to me now all due to bad quality if this one is not up to scratch then apple have lost me as a customer.
I have had iPhones since they first came out and never had any issues untill the 5 which is also the first phone they have put the price up on.
-
Good job im not in the market for an iMac because no CD drive really gets my goat!!
-
Im liking the new iPad mini.... looks perrrrrrfect!
-
NOW.... the mini looks perfect size to install in replacement of an MFD2/RNS510..... :popcornsoda:
-
it pisses me off that apple said in there advertising that the new ip5 was the perfect size to fit in your hand....just watched the ipad mini advert, guess what they said! they cant both be the right size for one hand!
i know most people are apple suckers and will buy stuff just because they sell it (me included) but we're not thick!
anyway, going off topic. does anybody have one of these?
http://www.apple.com/uk/displays/
i really want one (2 actually) to go with my macbook pro 13"...
bloody apple :fighting:
-
Yeah, we have those screen for our Mac Pros in the studio. They're awesome, but very expensive, in my opinion.
-

....Really? Have Apple dropped the CD/DVD disc drive on the iMac? What about loading music CD's?
-
.
Are we sure that the iPad 3 won't be succeeded by a same size iPad 4? There's no reason why both sizes of iPad can't be offered - Just like two sizes of iMac are available.

It's no biggie for me, if you need an optical drive Apple sell a USB Superdrive for £65.

Where can you pre order one online?

Then I stand to be corrected but there's no iPad '4' on the Apple UK web site. Thanks, Andrew :happy2:
I was at least right in suggesting that the iPad mini would not be necessarily superceding the larger iPads.

To be honest, I was surprised when I read it on Twitter. The differences seem "slight" to say the least!

There is. It's just not called the iPad 4.

Well, either way, I'm perfectly happy with my top spec latest generation (until yesterday) 27" iMac and iPad 2. No need for a change.

I only bought an iPad a few weeks ago, but I'm not too bothered as I bought it specifically to avoid iOS 6!

I have the receipt but I bought it from Vegas while I was there a month ago, so not sure if this will make a difference. At least I saved some money due to the exchange rate.

I know the updates don't really deserve it to be called the iPad 4 but it still means I only owned the 'current' iPad for 1 month. Anyway I will be over the slight disappointment in a few days as I really have loved using it for the past month :happy2:

Glad I'm not the only one. Really like the new MacBooks but no optical drive means I'll keep my macbook pro for a long time to come. Apple actually annoyed me by doing that. Not everyone wants digital content. I still buy CD's and DVD's. Though according to apple these kinds of people are behind the times. To me they're simpy trying to force everyone onto their app store. not impressed.
Also not impressed with their push towards cloud computing. The new macbook's have stingy storage in my opinion. I know you can add more but feel apple are starting to take the biscuit a little bit with their pricing.
-
We are thinking about buying a latest iPad as we still have one of the original iPads from two years ago. We are thinking of waiting until we go to the states next may but can someone let me know what sort of saving you get with the current exchange rate. If it is only a few quid we will just buy one sooner in the uk
Thanks

The 3rd generation iPad is being sold off by apple as "refurbished" for £315 on apples website now so a bargain if anyone is looking for an iPad.
My only worry is that apple seem to be sweeping the current model of iPad under the rug making it seem like it has never existed. So what's wrong with it?
-

....As a professional designer (now retired) I am a huge Apple fanboy but am very pissed off too about the direction Apple is taking by assuming that they know best about how we use our machines and then dictating that we can only work as they intend. They are becoming too American (America uber alles) and not international enough.
Apple have sacrificed functionality for style by dumping the optical CD/DVD drives. Discs are still used for music and games and there aren't enough ports on the iMac to sacrifice one for an external drive anyway. All my iCloud settings are switched to Off - I personally have no need to use it and it mixes up all my iMac and iPad Calendar and Contacts data into a mess anyway. 5GB free iCloud space is tiny anyway and I don't spend money on Apple products to pay further for such things.
Apple have got their heads up in the iCloud and their feet are no longer on the ground!

I can understand your need for an optical drive, but what do you expect Apple to do - continue catering for a growing minority and in doing so compromise the design of their products?
I really don't mean any offence, but it sounds like you need to move with the times!
-
Ha, you too Robin!
-
Ha, you too Robin!
....
Ah, but I'm 65yo and move slower (except when with the aid of a red GTI).
I see your point and that there will come a time when CD/DVD discs will go the way of floppy discs. But is it that time already?
Anyway, external optical drives are so noisy.

....As a professional designer (now retired)...
Perhaps useful to consider the view from a current Senior Designer. Our studio consists of iMacs and Mac Pros and although these machines have optical drives they are never used. I can't remember the last time we received a CD/DVD from a client. It certainly wasn't in the last two years. The majority of our clients either use DropBox or other online file transfer services. The printers and photographers we use all provide direct FTP access to their servers. For the past three years all the software we have purchased has been delivered via digital download. This is backed up in various places, but not on an optical disk.
No one is forcing anyone to use iCloud as a means of storage - that is most certainly not it's primary purpose.

Ill move with the times when apple start offering lossless audio content. HOWEVER.... since buying my apple TV we have been renting quite a few HD films and that in my opinion works perfectly for me, it doesn't bother me to have the actual DVD.

....You are right but I am now a consumer and the iMac, although it greatly overlaps with Pro machines, is meant to be a Consumer machine.
I was referring to my ex pro designer status with regard to being an Apple fanboy.
We aren't forced to use iCloud (I don't) but Apple do much to encourage us to - I see it as a thin edge of a wedge.
I could give other examples but it gets tedious: The way that Aperture and iPhoto interact - The software is being increasingly designed on the basis that all users are the same and that robotic user model is what Apple has decided who we are. There's no Think Different anymore.
-
Well I have nothing good to say about iPhoto, it's a terrible piece of software and always has been IMO. I simply don't use it.
-
Well I have nothing good to say about iPhoto, it's a terrible piece of software and always has been IMO. I simply don't use it.
....I find iPhoto an extremely useful first base for importing all my digital photos - It's where I can quickly trash the rejects, crop easily and even improve definition with an interface which is much more user-friendly than Aperture. I can then simply drag each image into a folder (window) to organise my best photos under in Aperture and further edit if I want to or in Photoshop.
In iPhoto I can also upload photos directly into Photobucket via its plug-in - Aperture doesn't have that option. I love the direct simplicity of iPhoto but just wish that Aperture would bring across image titles. The buried Aperture/iPhoto Libraries which Apple have now adopted are a nightmare so Importing doesn't display everything, especially as I keep all files on my main internal HD and not my internal SSD where all my Applications and OS are.
I have discussed all this on the Apple forum but no-one else seems to work the way I do!
-
fair point no offence was taken. I appreciate good well informed responses. I just feel that mp3's are a compromise. The files are compressed and the finer details of music are lost. I've tried it on decent systems on cars play the music of an Ipod etc then play the CD there is a massive difference to my ears. I agree perhaps I need to move on but a good mate of mine works in AV installation and he still see's CD as the ultimate in terms of quality. I will try the apple "looseless" format but this means reburrning my whole CD collection.
I also feel going down the digital route allows a few companies to manipulate the whole market in terms of pricing etc. Correct me if im wrong but im sure ebooks where found by the EU to have their prices fixed by apple, amazon, penguin etc
Redrobin couldn't agree more with apple becoming far too american for my taste! They still make great products but need to stop dictating and give users options rather than force them down an alley!
-
I've been waiting for the new imac for the past 6 months, very impressed, my only disappointment is in the £100 price increase.
I've not used the DVD drive on my macbook pro in 2 years, use drop box, sd card or usb sticks, can't ever see me using a cd/dvd again

The new iMac looks mint and certainly worth the extra £100. I would also spec the new Fusion drive - ssd performance with hdd capacity.
-
Fusion drive sounds like a disaster waiting to happen! :scared:
If i were getting one i would spec a 256GB SSD.. and then get a external USB 3 or thunderbolt drive.
Luckily i bought my MBP whilst a FW800 port was still on it. otherwise it would cost me another set of externals!

Apple did have plans to offer lossless audio content through iTunes, and were in discussions with the record labels to do so. I guess it's either in the pipeline, or they can't make it financially viable.

....A 256GB SSD internally is what I've got. Plus FW800 external HD's but no Thunderbolt external HD's as they are simply not affordable! So I have two Thunderbolt ports doing nothing.

I'm liking that new iMac
Like is all it will be :sad1:

I think it looks great - but I'd imagine its going to be a pricey option. One I'd probably plump for though.

It's about £180 for the fusion drive. Apparently, it's not like a typical hybrid which rely on caching apps etc you use. This actually moves the data to the quicker flash area.

Ended up cancelling the 8:01am Pre ordered iPad mini which wasn't due until the 15th. Tesco direct had stock of white minis, so ordered from there for next day delivery. Wife is so happy, it's great!!!

iPad mini arrived yesterday morning and i am very impressed. :happy2:
