Title: What modifications?
Post by: VWPalmer on October 24, 2012, 12:22:28 am
Not sure if this is the right section so sorry if it is.

I'm picking up my Gti on friday and I'm looking to get it to 300BHP before spring then I will start making it look a little nicer than standard for show season.

I should have around £2000 to spend but I am not entirely sure on what I should buy. I should be getting an EVOMS intake for christmas  then i was thinking about a non res sports cat turbo back miltek exhaust and a stage 2 remap. But I think I should have a little money left after those so what do you's think would be best to spend the money on if you like do a shopping list for the full £2k as i dont know if i have chosen the correct things in the first place  :signLOL:

All your advice is greatly appreciated

Had a feeling someone would say search but I was more looking for a kind of which order to do things kind of advice as I have already looked through many threads and articles to help me decide some of the parts I want, just not sure which order i should get them in. I have good tyres on already, I was thinking of an ALK. Also which stoppers would you recommend? I had looked at the cupra r upgrade but it seems quite expensive for essentially some bigger disks and new pads (http://www.awesomegti.com/car/vw/golfmk5/345mm-cupra-oem-brake-upgrade)

Firstly do you have an Ed30 or a 200Hp GTI?.

An ed30 will remap to 280-300hp for only £500 and the cost of an intake, however, a GTI(200ps) on the other hand will not get anywhere near 300hp without considerable outlay.  Stage 2 GTI with a TBE and  intake will net approx 260hp.  add a fuel pump, intercooler and stage 2+ and you'll be nearer to 280hp.  Beyond that, you need to upgrade the turbo.

My 2 grand would go:

R32 brakes £400-500
Rear Anti roll bar £150
Lower engine mount £150
200 cell downpipe £500
Intake £300
Stage 2 remap £500

if your purely after power for the minute

for 2 grand i would go

Stage 2 + remap £600
200 cell Downpipe £500
Intake £250
S3 Intercooler £400
£fuel pump £300

I agree with Sy, but on the handling side I'd add at least some lowering springs too. Remember. The £2k mods doesn't include fitting :happy2:

1,) Remap
2.) Sort front brakes
3.) Bilstein B12 or coilovers
4.) Uprated front and rear arbs plus WALK/Super Pro

Would get all that sorted before look at power upgrades like going Stage 2.

If you are manual you will need to budget in a new clutch and lsd before going to stage 2, mine lasted less than a week at 2+  :driver:

Okay so it looks like I have been misinformed on the capabilities of this engine to some extent haha. I'll post up the list I wrote last night when I get home see what you's think. I already have a set of coilovers but they are only FK AK Streets so not the best, don't know if I want to fit them just incase they are actually worse than standard :/ I'm not bothered about ride comfort just handling.

As for fitting cost's I'll be doing all the work myself apart from the remap.

Id scrap the green stuff pads and go for a different pad choice. Prob ferodo or pagid and you dont need grooved discs. The normal discs are more than enough for a road car. That way you can spend more on other bits.
I am stage 2+ and still using the oe engine cover rather than an intake. Id would only use an intake if i was making a track day car as it shifts the power higher up the rev range and loses low down torque. My car is actually quicker on the roads now than when i had my intake as have that low end torque to help on twisty country roads.
Engine mounts are good as they stop wheel hop and also help transmit the power to the road easier. You may also want  to include an uprated hpfp. That would be more beneficial than an intake and about the same price.

id remove the braided hoses, green stuff pads and definitely the grooved discs.

You'll get no notable performance gain from those discs other than they will go through your pads quicker.  I personally wouldnt use EBC pads on my car.  Mintex, Ferrodo and pagid are good options

You really want to consider a rear anti roll bar, they have one of the biggest handling improvements of all the mods you can do.

Would def get some handling mods! Either WALK (Whiteline Anti Lift Kit) or SuperPro anti lift kit, SuperPro lower engine mount (for the price, v good), H&R springs, an Autotech Rear Anti Roll Bar and as the others have said, brakes. Check out the thread on NSQBBK, for the money they can't be beaten.

For your money, stage 1 map, loads to choose from.

If you have a manual and you add lots of power (torque), a upgraded clutch will be needed.

Cheers I cant find the thread on NSQBBK I found lots of people talking about them but no real info and I googled the anitroll bar you mentioned and again found people talking about them on several forums but no shops selling them  :sad1:

I plan on getting the superpro ALK and bottom arms and I already have coilovers

^^^^ good call.  :happy2:

Think he was doing the arbs/spring etc at a really good price (fitted) and full wheel alignment as well. Probably not that price now but worth a call or PM.

Thanks a lot for the links big help I had heard of that brake set up before but never realised how cheap it was. I also found the ARB on the jbs website  :happy2: so looks like my list is coming together well.
