Title: Firmware upgrade problems - can anyone help?
Post by: Ess_Three on October 24, 2012, 04:47:10 pm
Folks,
I've been trying to upgrade my Firmware in my RNS510, and getting problems.

I have a 4120 disc that's known to work...and it won't update.
I get the software upgrade splash screen, select 'yes' and it crashes out after a couple of minutes, displaying a 'SWL Error' (software load error), ejects the disc and re-boots the RNS.
I've tried a 4120 update...
A 4020 and a 3810 disc and get the same error each time.

My RNS is a 'B' unit, currently running 2720 software.

Any ideas?
I'm struggling to know what to try next.

I can update the maps no problem at all...just not the firmware.
At least it's not 'bricked' the RNS!

Anyone got any ideas/pointers?
Thanks in advance,

Glen.

Can I ask how you know the disc works?
The sat nav reader can be very picky on the type of media it accepts for reading. Usually verbatim gets a good press with compatibality.

The source of the disc assures me the 4120 disc works, and it's on a Verbatim disc.

I will certainly ask about to see if anyone local has a proven upgrade disc of anything above 2720, and try again.

So best use Verbatim discs...any particular type (DVD-R, DVD+R or DVD-RW) that are known to give the best results with 'tricky' RNS units?

Thanks,

Glen.

tenner says its down to media just burn it a 1X also be careful not to screw it up too many times otherwise you may find u brick the unit download the SWL backup cd aswell that will put your unit back to the last version in a kind of safe mode to allow another update

yeah theres something called patience it looks like it hangs and freezes at a coupel of points  but eventually it progresses all done now v9 map is no diff to v8 somehow i dont think this is a legit update as the same route errors in v8 are present in v9

Interesting, perhaps I'll hold off updating for now...
