Title: Noises from front suspension
Post by: Black9 on October 28, 2012, 04:53:43 pm
Recently done the bolts and spacer mod on my ED30 as I was hearning noises coming from my front suspension. Thought it would cure it but it never. Had a good look over the suspension with a mechanic and from what he can see the ARB links etc look fine. He thinks it may be the CV joint? Sometimes get a clicking noise on full lock and also get a knocking noise over uneven surfaces or speed bumps.

I'm thinking it maybe the upper suspension mount bearings. Car has 70,000. The CV joints aren't split and visually look fine... How common are worn CV joints. Should I just go ahead and get the bearings replaced?

Subscribed to this thread as I have a "click" from passenger side when I turn right or the drivers side wheel goes over a bump. Replaced top mounts & bearings and drop links and it's still there  :sad1:

No play in the wheel at all so could be a knackered shock absorber  :sad1:

Good luck in solving yours  :happy2:

I'll check the brackets too. Don't be afraid to hijack, any opinions help

Something else it could be on yours is the subframe bolts? They stretch over time and allows the subframe to move about a bit  :sad1:

I had the clicking/crunching noise on full lock on  mine and a new outer CV joint solved it.

I've just had my driver side wheel bearing go this week, it's making a ratteling noise and is the 3rd bearing to go on my car in the last 2 months and I'm only on 44k miles. The bearings don't seem to whine on the golf like most cars they just seem to collapse without warning.

That's the first thing I replaced along with the washers. Thought this would solve it, it never:(

The outer CV boots aren't leaking, how can I tell if it's them without actually replacing them. Also can I replace as singles or pairs only?

Not sure how to check them

There was an advisory on the last mot from my car that the boot was split so it made it easy to diagnose for me.

Best bet is to get it booked into a decent garage and get them to look over the car.

I have made the mistake of replacing lots of parts on cars before to find the cause of the problem and I would of been cheaper just getting the car into the garage in the first place.

The noise is still there, I'm convinced the knocking over speed bumps is upper mounts bearings which I'm going to get replaced as a pair.

As for the clicking noise it only happens occasionally from the left front corner of the car & only when turning the steering wheel to the right. Sounds like a CV joint to me. Most likely the outer one. It's not split but everything else visually looks fine inc ARB links etc... So I can rule them out

Having it checked over this weekend hopefully, if nothing else looks out of place I'm gonna go ahead and order the outer CV joints. Should I be ordering in pairs or is a single CV joint ok? Any ideas what VW charge for CVs?

Both the knocking and clicking noise? It may well be the shocker as its lowered on VWR springs on stock dampers

Also how did u diagnose the damper. Was it after having other stuff replaced and the noise still being there....

I've also got a knocking/banging from the drivers front over bumps, along with a slightly 'loose feeling' / wobble from the steering wheel. Tracking is ok and wheels are all balanced so will be replacing the following at the weekend, couldnt pin point the issue so thought id just replace the lot - so it better fix it lol!!! Am doing the following:

AP Coilovers
Powerflex front inner wishbone bush
Whiteline Anit-link kit to replace the front rear wishbone bush
Both ARB droplinks
Both Top mounts/bearings
Both balljoints

I had a "clicking" noise in my civic which turned out to be a shocker.

Do you know the strut diameter for the GTI?

EDIT: found it: 55mm

Is there any sure way whether to determine its the dampers?

Only option I can think of are

1- get top mount bearings replaced and if the noise is still there I know it's the dampers

2- get dampers and top mounts replaced to rule them both out

I have VWR springs on stock dampers, could I just buy 2 used oem dampers or best to buy a set of 4 aftermarket dampers such as KW, Bilstein etc...

Any advice would be good:)
