Title: Car suggestions ?
Post by: Aparoon on October 29, 2012, 06:35:16 pm
I've had my 123d coupe for 2 years now. I bought the car as I wanted the coupe and the diesel fitted my needs - doing 1500+ miles a month... I settled the finance on the car a few months back as I didn't owe a massive amount with putting a big deposit down ...

Anyway , looking to move nearer to work again so will cut my commute to 16mile round trip as opposed to 45.. But this will mean that my girlfriend will be doing the miles instead haha. My plan is to sell my car and use the money to buy her something diesel to whack miles on , and buy myself something for my short trip to work. Been looking at alsorts but there's so much about , impreza's keep catching my eye , r32, 350z , some older m3 / amg mercs etc etc ...

Any suggestions from people from experience ? Don't want to spend more than 10k really as my car will just be something fun for work and gym and things like that without running costs being a massive issue.

Thanks in advance, Chris :-)

Yeah I've seen quite a few m3s .. Just dubious as the cheaper ones are getting on now, suppose I need to read up on common issues etc .. Anything that's common knowledge to be aware of specifically ?
Title: Re: Car suggestions ?

And I have looked at the rs6 also, enormous car though...

Only real worry on the E46 is the floor splitting, so long as it is 10years old or less, BMW fix it for free. SMG pump is pricey if you get a faulty spazbox.

Loads and loads, so you can pick and choose the best.

Been looking at changing mine and going rs4 or something silly fast but able to get a family in

Depends how crazy you want to go.

S-Type R
Integra Type R (DC2 and DC5)
Clio V6
Something from Z cars? (google it)
VX220
Elise
Maserati 3200 GT

Right now buyers market so much choice out there.

Good Luck

As above, get the rear subframe checked or cracking and if it's been done before. This is normally more prevalent on cars that have been tracked or had a hard time. With my M, no such issues thank goodness. also check vanos, can be quite costly if not maintained correctly and it needs doing. Tappets can be noisy on some, but adjustment will sort that out.

Other than that, they are pretty bullet proof and I still miss mine, been gone a year now and still hanker for an M3 again. They can also be surprisingly frugal on fuel. I get very similar mpg on my Jetta believe it or not.

A friend has a B5 S4 with a full RS4 conversion and 500+hp. It's hilariously savage, but needs a lot of work to make it go around bends.... Can be done though. Not sure I view it as a 'special' weekend car though?
Title: Re: Car suggestions ?
Post by: Aparoon on October 29, 2012, 08:37:39 pm
Just been having a quick read about the vanos issues and smg gearbox ..

Definately a car ill consider as I've looked at them loads in the past. But I am looking at everything , as I say its only for getting me to work and stuff so just want something that's fun to drive but relatively cheap. No one liking subaru's then ? Got a real thing for them lately , appreciate they are a little chavvy ... I have never drove one , so suppose I need to test drive a few ..

What year scooby ? U thought about an evo ?
Title: Re: Car suggestions ?
Post by: tony_danza on October 29, 2012, 08:53:12 pm
I don't know much about Jap stuff, a ScoobEvo to me is a cheaply built car with a very clever engine and drivetrain. Laugh out loud funny, but miserable to look at.

I do think you need something semi-stupid though, so ill have a left field ponder.

Usual consumables on the m3 as its a big car ! Reasonably bulletproof though unless you go for the smg as these sometimes have problems watch out for rear subframe problems ! I drifted the ass off mine and and had a few cracks on the boot pan ! Sold it after the repair otherwise a grate car ! Oh my alternator jacked it after 45k, and had 2 seized calipers, auto level on the xenons went as well plus a few other bits and bobs ........ Actually it was the most unreliable car I've owned , still a great car though !

Why do i know this won't end well or without earache, after all what do you get the man that wants everything and then something different 30 secs later....

XKR s'charged and a camel hair coat?

Clio V6 and a bag of brave pills?

MK4 R32 as you still go on about them lol

Griffith and the top AA cover possible?

Maser 4200 and some italian loafers?

As above, I'd get an ED30 Stage 1 Revo, and get your Mrs a Golf TDI 140, and get it remapped to 180,(In case you need to drive it) Doesn't affect the fuel economy, and Storm Developments in Aldermaston will do one of their brilliant maps for 200 quid for that car.

Alternatively, if you've got the classic Mk4 R32 itch that a lot of us on here seem to have, get one of those, They are really special cars IMO.

Or, how about a TVR Griffith if you want a really special weekend car? They are stunning, sound amazing, and are supercar-quick.

Or, (!) An RS4. The noise is unbelievable, I'd personally go for a cabriolet, they look stunning roof down or up, and would again be a cracking weekend car.

The ed30 isn't something I'm considering , been there, was a great car but don't want another , would be a mk5 r32 for that money  ...

Mk4 r32 is one I'm considering , still love the look of them and they're dirt cheap now, again never driven one though ..

Regards the Subaru I like the bug eye I think it is , and the other similar shape or around 2004 , I prefer the way they look to the evo no other reason.

I'd have one of the Hawkeye subaru's anyday, always fancied trying one for some reason, black with gold wheels or one of the ice blue 'wr1' editions please  :happy2:

Owned a bug eye sti type uk they are slow it's just noise and god they drink fuel. They need mega power over 350 BHP to be loads of fun I don't think I would own one again the evo for me drive better and are more raw as for the mk4 r32 again been there done that nice car but the seats are like arm chairs just too big and the car is slow but does sound good and I would only own one if I had the funds to turbo it. The big ??? Is do you need more than 2 seats and do you want something just to play with and not bothered about fuel

My mate has a WR1 and out of the box its fantastic.  He managed a 13.2 second 1/4 at the pod with the factory setup.

Awesome brakes as standard, you can move the bias from awd to mostly RWD via a dial next to the driver as well for better handling as well.  Not the best interior though.

Id consider a WR1 above all the other impreza options personally.

Midrange its not the best unless you have the revs up, but you can say that about any evo or impreza tbh, they are mapped to be driveb flat out.   I caught him out big time in my octavia when running stage 2+ though, he kept going on about how quick it was, so i challenged him to a 4th gear @ 2000rpm pull and annihalated him lol.  I even heard him change down a gear to catch me lol.  Flat out he destroyed me though.

I don't disagree with the article (though im yet to drive such four wheel drive golfs) just certain people seem to view golfs as beyond reproach thats all.

All cars are flawed in their own way, with very few exceptions - ignoring those flaws because of rose tinted glasses though is the worst thing to do.

I can't think of one Journo's report that has ever suggested a 4WD R is a better driver's car than its 2WD GTI cousin... yet owners still argue that 4WD makes it better.

Just had a go of a 07 wrx, was apparently chipped and had the prodrive exhaust. Quite liked it , never drove one before but it was as I expected .. Pretty fast , sounded good... Did seem quite cheap but I expected that aswell.. Think I would be happy owning one in the circumstance I'm looking at - getting me to work / fun ..

Haven't managed to try a s2000, 350z yet. Got a thing for a r32 though , torn between mk4 and mk5 , everything I've read says the mk5 is more grown up and refined etc but the mk4 more raw / fun ..

Knowing what you intend to use it for and the type if driving you'll do, I think a mk5 R32 is a good shout tbh
Mk4 is probably the more 'fun' car but a mk5 will be much more liveable with on a day to day basis imo, especially mit dsg...
Title: Re: Car suggestions ?
Post by: Aparoon on November 04, 2012, 04:51:49 pm
It's hard because there's very little in it cost wise , low mileage mk4s are marginally cheaper than some of the 06 dsg mk5s, so makes sense to buy the newer I suppose. I have driven a dsg r32 and it was mint. This wrx was 7k, it was quicker than the r32 from memory but not arsed about that to be honest think i would still rather own the r32.

Waiting on a part ex out of interst , I think they'll take the piss though

My link to Monkey's opinion of Golf Rs doesn't mean you shouldn't buy one, but it still should be considered. With stuff like that you'll get an unbiased and fair evaluation of one car against another. If you take that advice weighing up the good and bad points, and go and buy a car accepting its flaws, then you enjoy it more because you've made an informed decision.

If you go and buy a car with rose tinted glassed and the reviews of a load of biased owners, thinking it's the best thing since sliced bread and refusing to accept it has flaws, you'll be disappointed.

As Beddie says, jump in it knowing it isn't X Y and Z and just enjoy it for what it is.

I would have the 32 out of all the golfs, might not be as hardcore but a special car IMO, 3.2 in a hatch is what it's all about for car lovers, and with all due respect the gti is not the best handling car out of the box. We all have itches, mine are m3, r32 and ctr, scratch it.
