Not the best of timing, but I need 4 new tyres. 2 on the front are close to legal, and the back ones, whilst having loads of tread left, one has a nick in it down to the cord :sad1: As thethe back ones are Conti Sport contact 2's I need to rplace b oth of them as you can't get them anymore, and therefore to keep tread pattern the same they've both got to go.
Could do without this at the moment after my accident, so any help to find some really good tyres in my budget of 440 would be really, really appreciated.
So far I've found Pirelli P Zero Nero's at 116 a corner, which I reckon I can get down to 110 a corner at Tyre City.
Any other ideas? I'd love to go Goodyear Eagle F1, Pirelli p Zero Rosso's, Continental Sport Contact 5 or similar. Anyone aware of any deals or discount codes?
Thanks in anticipation,
Ian.

Just a heads up. You don't need the same tread pattern on the same axle mate.

I just fitted handbook evo v12
Lots of grip and only cost 110 each!

I'm really tempted to try pirelli p zero. If the pic is correct this is the tyre that won the evo tyre test. Slightly over budget with fitting but maybe worth it ?? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225-40-18-PIRELLI-P-ZERO-2254018-225-40Y18-NEW-PERFORMANCE-CAR-TYRE-/170917070742?pt=UK_Cars_Tyres_RL&fits=Tyre+Width%3A225%7CAspect+Ratio%3A40%7CDiameter%3A18&hash=item27cb738796
And if you're local to Norfolk it appears these will be £400 for 4 fitted http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225-40-18-225-40-18-2254018-Pirelli-P-Zero-92Y-Tyre-Brand-New-/150917528909?pt=UK_Cars_Tyres_RL&fits=Tyre+Width%3A225%7CAspect+Ratio%3A40%7CDiameter%3A18&hash=item232362bd4d

Avon ZZ5's mate, brilliant tyre. £102.98 on Blackcircles (and yes I'm using them on my R26 atm) :happy2:
-
Just a heads up. You don't need the same tread pattern on the same axle mate.
....Surely you meant to write that you DO need the same tread pattern on the same axle, and you meant that front tyre treads could be different from rear tyre treads. Ideally it's better to have the same tread patterns all round and deeper treads on the rear - Sticky Vicky must be obeyed!
From experience, avoid running Directional treads on one axle and Asymmetric treads on the other - It kicks in the ESP more often and can feel very snatchy to drive.
-
Love tyres still lists sports contacts 2's
Assuming you have 18s
http://lovetyres.com/tyre/Continental-Sport-Contact-2/225-40-18
Have you thought about getting part worns? Would save a bit of cash just now
-
Look up Etyres online always been the cheapest for me and they will come out to where ever you live or work and fit them in there van, they sometimes have discounts on there too on different tyres depending what's in stock.

These prices are great, but surely they are just for the tyre, not fitting and balancing as well?
-

That's not what I've always been told on here. I've always been told you should have the same tread pattern on an axle.

Thanks for that, I could get away with 3 then. This price is just for the tyre though isn't it? Not fitting and balancing?

Yes, you will pay £10 a tyre for fitting and balancing, so need to factor that in
-
Yeah just the tyre only.
I would see if any local places would be willing to fit brand new tyres and what they will charge you for it before ordering.
-
I got 4no 18in Goodyear F1 Assy2's fitted for £500 back in June, that was with tyreshopper.co.uk :happy2:
Great tyres too
Hope that helps. . .

Toyo T1R is probably the best cheapish tyre you will get or for £10.00 more per corner the Hankook Evo (cant remember if is called Ventus, ask vrs alex he runs them :happy2:)
-
Thanks guys,
I'm going to take those Camskill prices in to Tyre city tomorrow and see if they will match them plus 10 pound a wheel for fitting and balancing.
We are in recession after all!

No. It's a bit of a dated practice. There's absolutely nothing wrong with running different tread patterns on the same axel. I'm not saying do it deliberately but if you've got a good conti that's out of production there's no need to bin it off. Especially if its in nearly new condition.

....Sorry but I'm not sure I can agree.
If two tyres have a different tread pattern then they are very likely indeed (almost 100% certain?) to have different properties in their construction and/or rubber. For example, tyre wall stiffness. Consequently, under typical stresses and UK road conditions the car's ESP system is likely to kick in as it reads one wheel (tyre) behaving differently.
This is not necessarily a problem in itself inasmuch that the ESP will 'save the day' and help you out of trouble. However, I know from direct experience that the ESP kicking in due to tyre differences is very unpleasant and actually the first few times it happens it's quite scary until you realise what is happening and keep your foot planted through it. And that experience is with a Quaife diff installed.
Another aspect of this is that tyre wear rate is likely to be different between different tyres and again it's far from ideal to have uneven tyre wear on an axle.
So, until someone can fully explain otherwise, I don't agree that your advice on this is a good practice and especially not for any spirited driving (which GTI's are designed for).

Just in the process of replacing my two fronts as one has a slow puncture and are both getting pretty low. As best practice will put them on the back and put the rears on the front (best practice for FWD car, see other threads about this).
I think I have narrowed my selection down to Pirelli P zero Nero, seem to be getting good reviews at the moment and Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta.
Note my wheels are 17inch.
bestprices I have found so far : pirelli £166.78 for two delivered (Camskill)
Vredestein £180 for two delivered off ebay
Obviously I then need to get fitted.
Does anyone have the review from Evo of thePirelli P Zero Nero?
Hope this helps
-
I got 2 x ContiSport 2's fitted on the front of my R32 from Blackcircles a few weeks back for £130 each, so they are still available.
-
i had a pair of Pirelli P7 Cinturato's fitted for £85 each from Tyres R Us in Erdington... guys pretty cheap on most other branded tyres too, may be worth giving him a ring...
-
i get very confused wit the Pirelli P Zero structure if someone can explain?
At the top of the tree is there just a P Zero?
Then sub varieties of Rosso, Nero, Cinturato? If so how do you know which of these are the highest perfromance tyre?

Costco have their 20% off sale starting from 5th November, when I took them on that discount back in June it was £440 for all 4 Michelin pilot sport 3's supplied and fitted with Nitrogen :happy2:

Hi Mate,
Do Costco just sell the tyres as well? I only ask as my Father-in-law has a Cosco account but he is up in Liverpool and I am down South (In Afghanistan at the moment!) They are coming down to see the wife in a couple of weeks so I was just wondering if they could get the tyres for me. Then i can get them fitted at a later date.

Nice one Jussa! My dream tyre (that does sound very nerdy), that'll do me 440 all in. Where's Nitrogen though?

....Sorry, I don't know - I have never bought tyres from Costco.
In the past, my VW dealer has always fitted my tyres and more recently I have used my local ATS.

red is correct here in every area he describes
of course you can use different tyres on the same axle if you want inconsistences, if it was a micra or a fiesta or something then stick anything on, but were talking about a performance car here, other thing to remember is the water dispersal will be different on a diff tread pattern.
to run a car like a gti and want it to perform well common sense must be used.
personally if I bought a gti and it had 4 brand new tyres on it with one being a diff tread pattern it would be off asap and replaced for the right one, if the tread pattern is no longer available then at the very least match up the axles with the same tyre.
if you want to get it even more right then if you are on the search for 1 tyre then try and get a similar dot code tyre,,, the year and week of production of every tyre is stamped on the sidewall, so something like a august 2012 produced tyre will act differently than a tyre that rolled of the production line in say 2010, hence the reason why all major tyre manufacturers advise to discard a tyre after 4 years if I remember right, even if it is brand new and been sitting on a garages shelf, a tyres sidewall strength WILL degrade over this time and will then act differently on the road.
how many people out there knew the exact date of production is stamped on their tyres ?
look on the sidewall, there will be a 4 digit code, it can be on the inside or on the outside of the tyre, if you cant see it go to the other side of the car and it will prob be on the outside of that one,,, the 4 digit code will be for example 2611 in a little rectangle circular box where all the other things are stamped like the tyre size, 2611 will mean the tyre was made in the 26th week of 2011.
when I bought my car 2 months ago it had 36k miles on it and 2 of the tyres where original 2008 dot codes, salesman tried to tell me the tyres where 6 months old lol, once I pointed this out he just shut up.
every tyre in the uk has a dot code
diff tyres on same axle ? not on a gti dude but your car

Found this Review which used a Golf gti with 17 inch wheels;

As scottm72 very rightly points out: water dispersal will be different on a different tread pattern. I forgot to mention that and it's actually very important indeed. We get a lot of rain nowadays in the UK.
I didn't realise that tyres were date stamped (moulded) - We learn something new everyday :happy2:

Great news, the Continental Sport Contact 2's on the back are like new, and they couldn't find any nick on them at all. Must have imagined it!
The fronts were 1.6mm, so I changed them for Michelin Pilotsport 3's for 121 a corner, fitted, balanced with new valves and a free alignment check at Tyre City. They price-matched the Camskill price and added their fitting costs. Brucie Bonus!!
:happy2:
-
I have always checked the tyre date code after reading about it years ago. Needs to be checked when you get new tyres to make sure you're not being fobbed off with old degraded rubber. Interestingly my new set of GY Eagle F1's was only a few weeks old when I got them. Super fresh!
-
yeah same here with my eagles,,, still hot from the factory lol
