Title: wooosh sound at high revs
Post by: Max99 on October 31, 2012, 10:33:07 am
Hi,

Quick question, new owner of a mk5 05 GTi, wandered if it's normal... a mod ... something wrong that my car makes a whooosh noise at the end of high revs/changing gear. I googled and searched and found someone else describe it quite well, "One thing i had noticed was the pressure release (whoooosh, think the boy racers in Imprezas etc but not quite so aggressive) when releasing the accelerator at high revs"

Anyone shed any light ?

Thanks
Max

Hey Max

Sounds like a DV problem, i know you have only got the car, but are you aware of what DV is on it?

Just normal DV noise I would have thought?

Ive googled a bit and so it's a diverted valve right? So excess pressure from turbo is let out so protects engine? If I google Gti DV the video that appears as YouTube listing 'mk5 gti brokern DV' that isn't the noise I get as that's when acclerates mine only makes noise at very end (I.e when I shift from 2nd to 3rd) I used drive a 2.0T megane and this didn't make noise but have heard the noise on suburus etc before.. So unsure if its normal or not.
You can't hear it when radio on even quietly.

Sounds like normal DV sound. As long as the car is boosting, i.e you feel a slight kick when the turbo is working, it's fine.

Sounds normal to me but as the DV is only £35ish (get the Revision G, part number 06H 145 710 D) to replace you may as well change it to make sure. Bit of a faff on your early Mk5 bot still an easy DIY. Pretty sure there a fair few treads on replacing the DV, use "Search".

My original DV did the same - i quite liked the noise!
however it had a intermittent fault showing using VAG computery thing so i replaced the DV with version 'G'.  The old DV had a tear in the diaphram around 3mm by 3mm.  Car felt so much better but less whoooosh noise now!!

Get yourself a Forge Twintake if you like the dump valve sound and Darth Vader under your bonnet, it is addictive

Hi matey, if your struggling to find out what sort of sound your car is giving off then i could meet up with you as i am from sheffield also. Or you could even pop it down to statllers at attercliffe who is great with golfs.

This is almost certainly a normal noise based on what you have said...the valve is opening allowing the charged air from the turbo to recirculate back into air intake (when Throttle valve is shut) as opposed to potentially causing compressor stall if it was unable to release the air from the downstream pipe work.

For anyone who has a KO4 setup (ED30 or DV Relocation kit for KO3) the noise is probably more noticeable since the valve is located in front of the inlet manifold rather than bolted to the Turbocharger.

I quite like the sound, its not chavvy at all. :happy2:

It may still be worth getting it checked as they are known to split, Get a G version if you do change the valve.

Cheers guys, I am thinking at the moment it's normal, mainly due to how small/quiet it is and when it does it, will keep my ear on it though.

Thanks gazon69 for the offer though, will keep an eye out for your GTi around Sheff (did a search and found your thread showing pics)

Is it this place Stattlers http://www.statller.com/ ?

How much would they charge for a look at the DV and cambelt ? Any ideas? Also are they Bosch certified place?

It would only be a few £'s to look at the DV as its very easy to check on a ramp.

Steve Jnr (@Statllers) will get you the best price around for cam belt. Make sure you get the engine mount bolts replaced too as these are stretch bolts and not suitable to be reused.  :happy2:

If its and early gti the original dv valves made a really loud noise when changing gear and letting off the accelerator pedal when on boost.  I changed to the g version when I went stage 1 and the noise went :sad1:  Really miss that sound to be honest, not silly loud but was an entertaining noise.  There was no difference in performance between the 2 so my old one which I had from new was completely fine
