Post by: oak_grun on October 31, 2012, 01:20:44 pm
Hi

Im viewing a edition 30 this evening and just wanted to some tips of things to look out for.

Its a cat d car but owner has assured me it was stripped for parts and not damaged in any way - so will hold judgement until i see it in the flesh.

is there anything i should be on the lookout for in particular.  It manuel and done 50k with fsh.

what engine code should it be?

thanks in advance

Tim

Engine code will be BYD.

Be extra careful as it's Cat D. I'd only consider it if I could see the repair invoice showing what damage had been done and how it was fixed.

thanks for the reply. I have asked for accident pics but the current buyer purchased it repaired.

he claims it was stripped for bits and then recovered and the missing bits where put back on the car. He has both keys.

any other common faults of ed30's i should look out for?

thanks muchly :)

Timing belt should have been replaced. Look for full service history every year/10000 miles. Brake fluid changes every 2 years.

Take it for a good test drive, get a feel that everything is 'tight'.
Check the aircon blows cold.
Look at the wheels - they'll probably be replicas if it was stripped.

Take your time and ask plenty of questions.

I looked at a cat D Ed30 a while ago. It was an absolute dog - I pity the person who bought it.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi Tim,

Any pics or link to the car and/or details?

Apart from the Cambelt/water pump and the other usual bits (as mentioned) that should be done if the car has been on a time and distance service plan I would pay attention to the Edition30 specific item. Some cars when nicked and stripped have parts replaced with normal (lesser) parts. Have a good look through some interior pics of other cars for sale on Pistoheads/eBay and Autotrader, I would print some of those pictures off to check against. I've seen an Eddy in the paspast with a standard mk5 steering wheel, standard GTI gears knob, non OEM Headunit and as mentioned check the wheels.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers

They should look like this: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,55754.0.html
They will NOT have 'BBS Motorsport' printed on them

Yes-sticker will be in the boot under the carpet.

No-highline was a cost option

Just had a quick interweb search, is this the one?

Eddy, white, 3dr and only £7495!   tis on Autotrader. All seems to be there but if it were me, I steer well clear.

good call mate!

For peace of mind I would stay clear of any cat D and C. It's buyers market and plenty of bargains to be had!

Best of luck with the search

Thanks for the advice guys.

The search continues......thought it was too good to be true!

Will try and hold out or edition 30 or if the right spec gti becomes available then may opt for that.

Ah this car has been doing my nut, it was on autotrader for ages at £7495, tried calling sent emails as looked really nice never had reply, then it was off the net, now back on autotrader different pictures, still don't answer then all of a sudden it's on eBay for £8500 in a garage in Birmingham I emailed them asking is this some sort of con, apparently there a very cosher garage etc etc, and they bought it of the previous owner cause he was emigrating WAY to good to be true it's got to be a ringer

Never mind how good they look (and they may well be nothing at wrong with ones that are stolen rec'd etc) you'll be left with a total nightmare when you come to sell it on, I know of a couple of lads that have bought a stolen recovered Focus ST with minor damage, locks, wheels, suspension and stuff with the view to selling it on. All the work has been done to the best standard and documented but even at £3k less than the average list price they cannot shift it and are now thinking of stripping it down selling the bits and using it as a track/stage car instead. Shame because it's as good an ST as you'll find out there from what I hear.
